The Cheese factor

The past few times I have went to buy tunes I have noticed the alarming rate in which cheesy garbage tunes are being produced. In the past, if I had 100 tunes to listen to perhaps 50 of them would have been cheesy, and 40 of them would have just been poor. But the past few times I have listened to tunes, about 80 of these have been cheesy and about 15-17 just poor.

3 good tunes out of 100 is a dispicable ratio!!!

Every time I turn on the radio I have to endure the plethora of pathetic "vocal trance" from flip & fill and the likes (you know the ones I am on about). The compolations which have trance branded on the front of them are nothing more than cheesy pop compolations.

So, do you all think that there are too many cheesy tunes being released? Do you think that these cheesy groups and compolations from the likes of Ministry of Muppets are muddying the name of trance?

they do definitely! i think that theres an eurodance expansion that is going at an alarming rate!

Red face boringzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i am so freakin tired of people talking about cheese!"/!$"/%?
what is cheese to someone isn't to another!
i don't care if a tune is cheesy, i don't ask myself: *shit, i like this tune but i think it's cheesy...should i not listen to it?*

I've seen some cd's advertised on tv that are a disgrace to trance. Such things as ministry of sounds 'trance nation' which is full of all that flip and fill, scooter and all the rest of that cheesey commercial shit!

This stuff makes money...MoS doesn't care if you think it's cheesy or not, lots of people buy it so they will continue to release this kind of stuff. If you don't like, don't buy it.

I also think sometimes people might like a song but won't listen to it because others may refer to it as cheesy. Who gives a shit if others think it's cheesy? If you like it, listen to it and don't care about other people.

I have a question for all of you: Stuff you label as cheese do you not like it because of the sound, or because it has comercial elements you wont listen to it regardless of if you like it?

Posted by whiskers on Jul-31-2002 03:16:

me=the cheese meister!
kneel before your god! blah!

I think it's the sound because you can tell it's meant to be commercial by it. It's often times the vocals too that make a song cheesy. When you can tell a song is meant to be catchy then it's commercial and usually labeled as cheese.

There's good tracks though that sometimes just get a lot of play and suddenly they're commercial and cheesy (i.e. 'Sandstorm')

Posted by EriK_V on Jul-31-2002 04:25:

too many people listen to too much underground. If it was as good as the cheese... wouldn't it be on/above the ground? Either way said, cheese is here to stay. Popular trance won't fade. btw "trance nation" isn't bad imo

I know why a track is labeled as cheese, my question is how many people stop liking it because its overplayed? A great example i guess is rapture, last year everyone talked soo much about it, and it was like #3 in single of the year votes here, now people say its horse shit doesnt make sense to me

Posted by InfiniteSquare on Jul-31-2002 05:00:

d00d, what are you talking about

if you don't like it, don't listen to it.. go and listen to the good trance. there is tonz of wikked trance singles/livesets out right now.

QUIT using the ghey word CHEESEY

i like some tracks that people call cheese, like Jurgen Vries - The Theme (altitude remix). does altitude usually remix "cheese"?

Posted by Joca on Jul-31-2002 07:24:

I agree, put this cheese stuff away, PLEASE

Posted by blazed it on Jul-31-2002 08:27:

everybody likes some cheese now and then....

grilled cheese sandwich to cheesecake your gonna get sometime.

Posted by Vestan_Pance on Jul-31-2002 09:32:

I think some of you have missed the point.
I agree with Acid Circus. Stuff like Flip & Fill, Kelly Lorenna etc is included on 'Trance Nation' or 'Addicted To Trance' and it is not trance music at all. Its pop music for young kids. To include it on a trance compilation just ruins the reputation of proper trance music.
These producers are just creating a simple melody, adding a cheesy vocal, et voila, a hit is assured. It's easy and it makes them money so why should they stop??
But to call it trance is wrong.

Mon opinion!

No, Altitude does not usually remix cheese, but neither does Flutlicht, and they remixed Will I. Both those remixes are good, though, and not cheese in my opinion, even though the originals were cheesy.

Anyway, what I think the basic problem here, is that many people are calling certain music "trance" when it is not really trance. MoS is a major culprit here. It's annoying, but you can't really blame them, they're only trying to make money, and it works.

hmmm cheese trance is still trance.... oh and there is no such thing as a genre called "cheese trance" =) but i see your point.... but its just a matter of a song being over played. if you dont like it then dont listen to it.... stick to progressive or harder stuff.... no one is force'n any of us to listen to it so.... lets just put this thread to rest.

Some of you guys have got what I was attempting to get out with my original message.

For those guys who tell me not to listen to it if I don't like it, well I don't listen to it! I can't avoid it if I am checking a big batch of tunes, its annoying to me to have to listen to so much rubbish to get but a few good tunes. Too many producers are taking the easy route out by sticking the most cringe-worthy vocals on top of their tunes.

Also, as I try to promote a new night in Glasgow I cannot call it a trance night, although thats what it is. Too many club bosses and punters who we have told "its a new trance night" just avoid us like the plague. The name has been muddied beyond repair I'm afraid.

Posted by xls on Jul-31-2002 17:34:

This really isn't a new phenomenon. Would you really consider "Alice Deejay - Better off Alone" as trance? I sure as hell wouldn't (with the exception of the Signum remix). And yet that's what a lot of people were calling it. That stuff is no different than N'Sync or Britney etc... (except for the smaller marketing budget) Pure Pop. Catchy vocals that all the drunk girls can remember at the bar.

It's cheese because you don't like it in your opinion. Hell, it's CHEESE to me too! But they're doing this to market to the mainstream, to suck them into the real good shit!
That's how I see it. I mean when you first heard Trance, was it not cheesy mainstream/commercial material?
The CD that turned me onto Trance and into investigation for better music was a lot of the "Trance" Compilations sold in CD stores. Like "The Element of Zen" and The Crystal Method and Global Dance shit. This was back in 98. But very soon I learned what quality trance was and listened to better stuff.
