Wow! A lot of people are trying to throw events there. Its definitely gonna be the hotspot for downtown EDM events.

The hard part is getting people downtown.

don't pass out flyers in WeHo, you or your event will be fined. Well... you can but you have to be sneaky about it

Calderone is SICK... Most of his events do a have a large gay following, especially when he was playing tribal house (gays tend to love tribal house for some reason). But he's always had a straight following as well. The only problem is when a straight person walks into a club filled with buffed up guys rubbing on each other, the straight guys make a straight line exit for the door. Lately he's been playing a lot of "techno" type stuff, losing a majority of the gay following. Should still be a great event.

I live next door to this place in SB Lofts and DJ'ed there when it was Versus about 2 years ago with George Acosta. I'm in their shit everyday asking whats the status on their events and I'm actually surprised this is the first word I've seen on TA about this venue.

The venue itself is absolutely gorgeous and they have the biggest LED wall I've ever seen! Once they get their shit together and start moving forward this venue will be unmatched if they do it correctly. Currently they're building an in house team to go forward with EDM events. All events currently planned and all past events have been practice and cash flow for the barstaff/cocktails, security etc...

I set up a meeting with Peter Beckers and Pat Schoostra about 6 months ago and since then I know they've met with Reza and Pasqualle along with the guys that head up Ultra and some dudes from Amnesia. Heavy hitters but nobody has taken the bait and set up events on the regular.

Nov 20th I believe they're looking to do a Saturday Night sessions there but, that date moved and it will probably move again. All rumor as I've only heard them talk about it and never seen any promo for it.

*edit Feelgood has his event that weekend according to his facebook

Saturday night is def their Asian night. I have a couple buddies who always throw a free Halloween party. They are house DJ's (Duo Deejays they call themself) It was last night and I didn't end up going....

...look like the place has potential. If the right promoter goes in and spends some money on talent...

I personally think that downtown LA has a lot of potential BUT it has to be done properly. What properly is, well... I have no clue.

Whats everyones opinion on events taking place in downtown LA? Can it be successful?

I've seen pictures of the place and it looks amazing. Just waiting for some good events. LA, Hollywood, makes no difference to me.

The biggest issue I think the major promoters, if they aren't biting, is that it's DOWNTOWN. No one goes downtown just to hang. So you have to have a crowd that's specifically going to the venue for that event.

I've brought up random venues int he downtown area over the years to a few promoters to say they should check it out, and the common issue they always gave that made them have little interest was the fact they were downtown making everything that much harder.

Back in the 90's Downtown LA used to be the place to be at. All the underground parties happened there. It was kinda creepy, but it was fun. Than again, back then the clubs weren't as nice as they are now. No bottle service existed and they were more focused on people having fun.

As a matter of fact, I remember the first Monster Massive was held at the Alexandria Hotel on the corner of 5th & Spring. The Alexandria used to be a very popular spot to throw undergrounds. I loved that place.

I think it can be. I think the whole LA Live is actually starting to take off... I remember a few years ago if you were down there on any night where there was no game at staples center, it was dead. But when I was down there earlier this year on a few nights where nothing was going on, there were actually decent crowds. And this was in the middle of the week.

They are also developing a lot of the area around there, too. Kinda the area around Mayan. See a lot of high rise residencies going up and other things. While it will take awhile, as all that grows I def see the potential of a good downtown LA nightlife scene growing.

Posted by Cool1g on Oct-30-2010 20:33:

in the late 80s/early 90s Vertigo (later Glam Slam, etc.) was the hottest club in all of LA... so its not like it can't work. and today a lot of bars/clubs have lines to get in like Edison and some other places.

i'm sure if there is a well known dj spinning at the Exchange, it should do fine... Giant did at least one party with PVD at the old Shark Club that did fine... the first S&D show ever in LA was at the same venue and also was busy. not to mention the parties at the Mayan...

a weekly is a different matter but I think people will follow the dj talent there if its good enough. i can't imagine anyone on TA saying they'd skip seeing DJ XXX in downtown because its there instead of in Hollyowood.
