critique my rawk mix

I think i have credits no?

http://soundcloud.com/bluffmunkey/the-reading

I've realised it's over compressed already, but I rushed the final mixdown as it had to be in by 8pm (UK time)

It's for a Halloween challenge incase you were wondering why I wen't all Adams Family

I completely missed the sound I was after, but i'm still fairly pleased with the results being my first stab at teh rawkz.

Very polished and cool sound. So clean yet full. Love the snare and guitar treatments.

This screams a cool dark vampish famale vox - could be massive with the right vocal.

Top notch work mate. Can't fault it. I'm not a rocky guy but this is as good as it gets and surprisingly for me something I would enjoy at full tilt in the car.

PS - wtf is RAWK?

rock and roll man loving those guitars and that vocal is cool as you say it's a we bit over compressed and dry to my ears also as a little bonus check out this guy

The lyrics at the start where a little too film like thus kinda not cool. guitars missing a bit of bottom end that should be coming from the bass. Kick drum has a weird envelope. I would keep it dry and really crush the overheads and combine via NY convention. The drum beat was too computerized. A guy playing metal would always have his hats a little open and crash at any important juncture.

The shredding when you want it to be emphasized, eq it to the front. Nothing is really taking front place. The chugging needs to be double tracked and eq'd to really fill the spectrum.

Speaking of guitars, here is something that is due monday. Just playing muted 16 ths. Rather easy when you can record 10 takes and take the good. Drums were recorded via vdrums. I am quite the rocker.

Output 1-2.mp3 - 2.71MB

technically not supposed to show anyone but whatever. Just a normal tele thru ensemble preamps with amplitude that sounds great. I made a midi template from the guitar pattern and sync the hihats to make things more lively. No mixing at this point. Just some A to B composition. Also not that anyone cares but there is a triple melody fugue imbedded in that mess. I don't think you can quite hear all the parts as the winds are rather low in this raw mix. ANyways, thankfully I don't have to mix my stuff and I can leave it for the pros.

pretty bad ass for tv music if I do say so myself. The hardstyle synth as a hit is rather sick.

sounds good, someone mentioned over compression but that is how heavy metal usually sounds like.
good job

Normally i'd agree about the vocals but in the context of a Halloween challenge track I thought why not!

As for the mix points it's all noted. I didn't really leave myself enough time to do it properly and crammed it all yesterday. Still, I learned a lot lot forthe inevitable follow up.

No sweat, I can't access Z Share anyway!

Wouldn't mind listening to what a God like yourself can do though

hack work. 6 hours of composition and production. For tv, we just go straight into the music. No formal orchestration. ALthough I suppose knowing the libraries is a skill in itself. It does show you the pace tho in that this is something that would take less than a day to compose and record and then half a day to mix but that isn't my task. I did polish the arrangement since this recording but anyways.

I'd love to get into the score next but my PC was crucified when I tried to multi load Kontakt.

Looks like it'll have to wait.

Nice and crunchy.

Needs more cowbell and sidechain.

Seriously, good job. I like it.

for me sounds perfect, real good mixdown if when the contest ends you make it downloadable i'm sure i'm going to get it.

Posted by KilldaDJ on Oct-31-2010 17:20:

need more cowbell and less of this 'wide' stereo effect, so its more punchy..

Posted by tehlord on Oct-31-2010 19:12:

All jokes aside, I was actually going to use a cowbell on the 8th notes!!!!

Thanks again fellas, all set for download now btw, I forgot last night

miss horns, without cowbell and horns this is not as good, i was cheerful when i posted and didn't realise lacks of basic elements.

Posted by DJ Robby Rox on Oct-31-2010 23:16:

Eh I don't like rock so I'm a bit bias in that regard but the main melody is just too repetitive.
You can tell its very well produced, and its definitely a decent track overall, but about half way through I couldn't take it anymore.

And considering this is your first rock track its still better than worse imo.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Nov-01-2010 00:39:

ok first attempt. It was a little too garage band impromptu with shitty 16 year olds playing . I suppose you really need to listen to rock in order to know how to get things sounding rock. That one lick sounded dream theatre ish , a band I fucking hate. I felt like your amp was at 6 when it should be at 11 and you're not rockin enough. anyways, good effort.

Posted by theterran on Nov-01-2010 09:32:

Pretty sick. Glad that I peeked in this thread.

Rawk on.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Nov-01-2010 10:36:

pretty cool. did u use real guitar and drums or was this all samples and sequencing? what intruments where u in that case using. wondering especially about the solo guitar.

Posted by Raphie on Nov-01-2010 10:42:

Cool! would do nicely in a Robert Rodriques movie

Posted by tehlord on Nov-01-2010 11:04:

Cheers again fellas. 'Ok for a first attempt' sums it up for me too really. I'm pleased with the way it's turned out and actually like to listen to it, but I see vast improvements from this point forwards.

The demo was started with a sampler and there is still one part layered in the two short breaks.

There are 6-7 further real guitar layers over the track, the ones I played are through Guitar Rig and the lead and some chord layering was from my guitarist pal (as he can actually play the thing ) who recorded them through an amp. Don't know the specifics though.

Drums I did with Battery, multi output generic rock set with the humanise set fairly loose. I just played a few little rhytms out live and tidied them up in the piano roll.

Bass in from Kontakt and went through Quadrafuzz I think.

I did the smaller little break solo's (the shit ones) and my pal Bruce did the shredding solo's.

The heartbeat was a heavily processed reverse kick followed by the same kick played forwards, low passed and then run through a reverb with a very large pre-delay.

Most, if not all of the FX samples are from Freesound.

I think that's it really!

you need BF2 evil drums ! And Sr5 rock bass to fill it in. And more china crashes.
