Mixing in key?

Hi i have seen a few videos lately where famous trance DJ's have talked about mixing records by what key the music is written in. I was just wondering how do they know which key the track is written in? Obviously i'm not a producer so would i be able to work out what Key tunes are in or not?

Any advice/info appreciated, thanks.

there is a list you have to sign up to. The yearly fee is about 300$ . It is rather hush hush tho.

That was last year. It's gone up to $450 for 2011 and there's a waiting list so no chance anytime soon anyway.

Lol. Nah but seriously you can't really tell what key something is in without having some basic musical knowledge.

Check this sticky http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...threadid=125634 for a list of keyed tunes that users have already identified.

The list is far from complete, but it may help.

There are programs that will key tracks. Mixed in Key is one of them.

The big name DJ's use VDJ and Mixmeister to find the key of the song.

use a piano. its costs like 2k

Yeah, but who really needs a full 88 keys? Bit of overkill if you ask me. And you know those three effect pedals by your feet aren't going to see as much use as you think they are. Better off getting a glockenspiel for about 1/10 of the price, imho.

Dislike mixed in keys... Mix with your ears guys. I tried mixed in key and it's okay. Good for references

Steve, can you close this thread?

The OP should have done a search for any one of the 1000+ threads about this.

But then I might as well close 3/4's of the threads on here

You are right though, OP Have a search and you'll find plenty of threads on this.

Sorry I'm only getting round to reading all the threads now. I was in Berlin since Friday and only back today.

Thread closed.
