People With Optus Cable
I just got told by my bro, Optus are changin their cable internet services as they will have no more unlimited download. It will be a limited download of 3 Gigs a month.
Sucks hey. And I was thinking of getting Optu$ cable. I'm not now. I mean I download 500mb a week on my 28.8 modem, imagine what I would be like with cable...
Yah same ... seems like the broadband services are getting worse and worse, ie paying more for a crappier service

The new limits is for new customers and customers that are at the end of the 12 month contract. I'm one of the lucky ones that got mine in feb so i get to d/l away.
There is a limit for existing contracts but it's like 11GB over any 14 day period. Still plenty to play with.
ya, unfortunately we're one of the long-term users
our 15g/month average over 9 months (that's how long i've installed du meter for) now has to be cut 1/5th

Yes it is fuckin bullshit... I can't download movies now i have to check always how much i have downloaded... How about the fuckin Uploads 15k what the fuck is that shit...?
FUCK OPTUS if you ask me
So much for the days of 30gb/month leaching :-(
As far as I'm aware, the changes will be that you have a 3gb download cap, afterwhich, you won't be disconnected, but rather, your bandwidth will be limited to the equivalent of 56k (5.2k/sec or whatever).
hmm...i was told it was 28,8k!??!
not that it's any better

It would be 56k speed, but it would be *true* 56k speed, not the 44-48k speed that we all get through our dialups.
You'd get constant 6.5k/s downloads, simply because your DSL/Cable doesn't have to transmit a stop bit (giving it an extra 1/8th speed).
What shits me about this stupid 3gig cap, is that i download 3gig a month on 56k anyway!! And that's not even trying. At least Optus leaves you with a 56k equivalent instead of slapping on crazy per megabyte charges ala Telstra. What shits me about Optus is that they dont cover my area - Surrey Hills. Just went out to Notting Hill (ugh) to order our new computer, we shall get it next Saturday, i would love to have cable to fill the 160gigs
Ciao
Pointy
Tell you what guys - I went over my 3gig cap not long ago, and I must say - the speed is much worse then a 28.8kbps modem!
The speeds are horrific, the net is barely surfable.
Optus sucks.
There's my 2cents!

I don't know if it's really *that* slow .. you're just used to the instantaneous-ness of cable
dunno bout that one
did a few quick (download) test from rather reputable sites (ftp.aarnet.edu.au), and even downloading from my own webspace.... I was not able to get speeds above 0.9kb/s.
that's... slowwww.
either way - the month is nearly over :P
Yikes .. that is slow...

damn i've been watching this little war and hoping things would get better from competition not worse. I see DSL getting a bit cheaper now though. i'll wait some more till i get cable i think
yeah - it's great for the first 3000mb, but after that... you've hit a bloody big brick wall..
although it's B/S though, cause their assuming 1gig = 1000mb... we all know that 1gig = 1024mb..
they could of given us the extra 72mb of downloads... the bastards!

heh, yep...went over 3gb at the start of the weekend
it's far worse than modem...'cos at least modem can hold a constant speed...but this shit spikes all the time...ie. d/l's at 6kBs for a second, then d/l's nothing for a second, d/l's at 4kBs for a second, then d/l's nothing for a second, d/l's at 7kBs, then nothing...u get the idea

f00kin hell...next time i'm bringing my modem home...get faster speed for sure with a 56k than the crap cable
...but can't totally complain...pings r still fekkin good

Yeah, the new system just sucks
However, I went on a binge at the end of the last month of limitless downloads (July), and vacuumed over 3 GB in 2 days off the DC Hub. I'm only just getting through listening to everything now...
Wireless is the way to go
Ok we all now cable operators Optus and Telstra suck. There is no real competition between them and they give the worts service to their customers among the other cable operators of the developed countries.
Soon they'll get their match! Now smaller IP companies have the technologie to deliver cable speeds without cables!!! Using a system similar to mobilephone network they can achieve just that. A few of'em already started the service and as they get more customers a lot more IP companies will join the train and as a result the real competition will start in Broadband market.
Here's a link for you to see what I mean
Wireless info
54mb/sec............jeez i wouldn't complain with that!!!
Tarif 3 - 200Mb between 5-10pm. u've got 2 b kidding me !! I could almost do that o/n on my dialup connection. with broadband that would ALL be used up in just one evening
still doesn't look like an option if u ask me.
at this stage, next year I will be signing with Netscape. Same deal 3Gb/mth but none of that tarif riff-raff and the like. ~55$ if I remember rightly
fuck BB in this country sux shiat
the only real option as far as I can see is to dl as much stuff as u can using a T1 connection where u work or @ uni hehe
I guess it HAS to only get better once Scum$tra stop being such monopolising ****s !! (read: I do NOT like Telstra !!)
Telstra's selfishness and greed is the sole reason that Australia lags so far behind the rest of the Western world when it comes to broadband...
I possibly hate Telstra more than any other company, which is saying a LOT..
Apparently there is a new way of getting broadband being tested in rural QLD at the moment when u connect via the power lines - finally something that doesn't have to touch Telstra's overpriced network....can't wait
