What's so great about classic trance?

Ok I'm finally bored of current trance. I still enjoy all the "cracker trance" tunes I bought this year, but I haven't purchased a new trance song since August.

So I've been looking more into the pre-2002 trance sound that all of you have been raving about on here. What is so great about it? It's basically a primitive, watered-down version of current trance with fewer melodies and rougher production qualities.

For example, Paul Van Dyk's most famous tracks sound like the stuff that beginners post in the music production forum. They're very, very basic. I'm not expecting Andy Blueman orchestral breakdowns and supersaw, but I can't believe trance got so popular with the classic sound.

Aside from the simplicity and nostalgic factor, what is so good about classic trance?

Creativity. Originality. Unpredictability.

I don't see how originality makes music good over time.

So they were the first to do it...now others have done it and it sounds much better. "Originality" is a musical trait that doesn't age well.

Behold, my arse.

I don't think anyone will even bother anymore, so.. Your time here is over.

Posted by RapidFire on Nov-09-2010 17:31:

music doesn't have to be overly complex to sound good. sometimes the simplest, most bared structures are the best. the older songs were a lot more inspired... you could just hear it. the sounds were original, more versatile and creative, and quality melodies weren't traded in for sleek production techniques like today.

but its normal. that was the birth of a genre and artists were excited by the notion of something new, they were driven to create and pioneer an entirely original form of dance music. you can't expect that kind of adulation to last forever, at least not on such a broad scope.

I understand what you mean because DJ Pauly O put trance in critical condition and sent it to the ER with his infamous mixes in the late 90's. however, you cant diss my label Harthouse.

the same thing with other classical things. Present sounds nice but sometimes it's good to look back at origins to mix things up a bit

Songs are songs - there are good songs of different types ongoing..

It all started with john denver.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4hsC0nRvZM

Then alphaville came along...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5Yx2TnN9mc&feature=fvst

and here is 80's new wave

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6DX...feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVlbQVilwbQ

last train to lasa and others were just plain adventures in sound and more EDM oriented...

then the anthems really came along big time

from progressive you'll probably recognize

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGifBX-IqB8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03dJ...feature=related

and sooooo many others.....

bear in mind there were underground scenes the whole time, 80's acidhouse for instance, EDM movements in sanfrancisco..

you have mainstream kraftwerk and JMJ etc.. also but these are classics. bear in mind only about 200 trance tracks from the 90's would likely be deemed classic.

I can't forget this manish

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDWy...feature=related
a story of hard luck and wonder

analogous.

Posted by pzK on Nov-10-2010 00:38:

Their approach to melodies is much more complex than most current trance. Back in the day you had several melodic themes or variations upon a main theme throughout the entire track as opposed to now where in 90% of the cases you have 2-3 mins of nothing but kicks, then a breakdown which completely takes away the danceability containing a melody which seemed artificially put there, followed by the same kicks/basslines again. What I mean is, there used to be more shape into songs (I think that's what madforbrad meant in his thread at the producing forum).

I feel bad for the kids who have gorged for so long on the over-produced junk food of modern epic trance they can't appreciate anything made from simpler ingredients.

EDIT: And what's the point in trying to like something just because everyone talks about it? If you aren't getting a vibe from classic trance just by playing it, it's not like anything we can write down will give you that vibe.

what is so great about classic techno?
what is so great about classic coke?

Most of the "classics" you listed there were exactly the tracks that started the downfall that led us to where we are now.

That one is great just because it uses sounds similar to the classic L.S.G. - Fragile.
But because it's modern too almost no-one noticed that.

Exactly, it's like watching masterchef when they take classic recipe combinations that have worked together for years, decades, centuries and try to add something silly to it. Sometimes it works but most of the time less is more for a reason.

Dont criticize music from a period of time whereby you've barely even bothered to spend time to find any decent tunes with an open-minded perspective. Making references to Paul Van Dyk's early works shows you barely give a shit in your course to do so or you either haven't grown any pubes yet.

You say simple melodies in trance classics are primitive. I find them alot easier to remember and conveys the meaning of the track more effectively. Is that why producers/DJ's these days run out of ideas too quickly only to find themselves remixing old tunes all over again eh?

Watered down. We are talking about the state of a genre that is widely and officially accepted as the "golden-era". The very success that led itself to its own bastardization by try hard producers who constantly fail in their attempts to reinvent the essence of Trance.
If old trance fails that much in order to be considered watered down I'm pretty sure the "golden era" title would automatically become reclaimed back to its respected position today. However unfortunately for you, your obnoxious tastes in Trance music in comparison to the ratio of historic success of the genre from that point in time, bringing that title back would be about as possible as fisting the end of a needle. Watering something down is a process which follows the chronological order of time (in this case Success moving down towards Failure), not backwards, you fucksocket.

Rougher production qualities. In other words, all you need is advanced up to date ableton/fruityloops/whatever shitty production software filled with clichd presets to make that modern sounding Trance tune with those mega high quality crisp sounds and reverberated X 50,000 vocals made in an hour like a cheese factory for that next gig unicorn laser gig instead of some good old inspiration. Youre an insult to music in general. Fuck off.

quote:
but I can't believe trance got so popular with the classic sound.

It is sad indeed when those clean, innocent rainforests are bulldozed constantly, just like the way technology (abused) and the ever growing hunger for profit fucked the meaning of Trance music. Pull your head out your ignorant, arrogant arse and accept it.
