Hello. This is an interview with Sander Van Doorn (12th DJ Mag 2010). If maybe some people didn't know Virtual Vault last time (
), they probably know this guy we call Sander Van Doorn
Feel free to comment, debate about his recent works, his past etc
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Hi Sander ! First, thanks for giving us some of your time. Did you start by producing or mixing?
Sander Van Doorn : Hey ! I started producing and then was forced out onto the road to play for people! So it was hard but also great to be thrown in the deep end.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : How would you define a Sander van Doorn (and alias)'s production? What are the features of your music?
Sander Van Doorn : Whatever I do I try to make the tune have one identifying element to the track that makes it stand out. Usually it's the hook but...
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Which genre and which artists inspired you most in your first steps into electronic music?
Sander Van Doorn : Marco V, Depeche Mode & Moby were some big early inspirations for me.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : What is your favourite track ever?
Sander Van Doorn : Wow that is way too difficult to answer! I was listening to Jeff Mills - The Bells earlier today and it's an absolute classic, but you'll have to give me a year or so to be able to decide what my favourite track ever is!
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : In which party / event did you have your best time and why? In general, do you prefer small parties in clubs or big ones in festivals / events?
Sander Van Doorn : My favourite recent event was Dusk till Doorn at Sankeys in Manchester. Sankeys is quite a small club, 1000 people but with a great atmosphere and every time I've played there recently I've had the best time. That's not to say it's not fun at festivals where you're playing in front of 20,000 people sometimes. You can't beat having all those people sing back at you or cheering, it's an amazing experience and can be quite overwhelming. It really depends on the event, it's nice to mix up the big and small gigs.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Where do the nicknames Sam Sharp , Purple Haze and Filterfunk come from?
Sander Van Doorn : They are just nicknames I came up with which enable me to release a broad range of styles.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Public has noticed your dual skills with a side more underground, dark and another more popular. Do you consider that these two aspects are in opposition or complimentary?
Sander Van Doorn : I think they are complimentary as the variation not only will keep things fresh for both the listener and myself, but attract a wider variety of listeners.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : By the way, what does "Apple" refer to in your track Sander van Doorn - Apple? Could it come from Adam and Eve's story? I like its dark and poisonous atmosphere.
Sander Van Doorn : You've obviously thought about this a lot, so I'm going to say that you're absolutely spot on with this!
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : What can we expect from your "Dusk till Doorn" parties? Tell us what is going to happen, the program, the music etc... We want to know more about this concept.
Sander Van Doorn : At Dusk Till Doorn nights I can showcase the different styles of music that I make and like, because it will often be a 5 or 6 hour set, depending on the venue. It's recently turned into more of a stage show so if you're ever able to check out the show you should!
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : The trance community is very worried about the changes announced for Trance Energy : new name Energy , new music, new artists. What is your opinion on this matter?
Sander Van Doorn : I'm just happy to be playing the event, I'm sure it's going to be incredible as usual, and I shouldn't worry about a name change. The greatest boxer in the world changed his name and he remained the greatest boxer in the World.
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Do you prefer Gouda or Camembert?
Sander Van Doorn : Gouda of course! Gotta represent!
Pierrick (Trance In France Team) : Do you have something else to say? By the way we hope to see you soon behind the desk in France (not sure you have already mixed in our country)!
Sander Van Doorn : I haven't been to France to play, so I hope to see you anytime soon!

First, I would like to add my opinion :
For me, he is one of the best Trance DJs behind the desk. His technical capacity have impressed me since 2006. I discovered him in a "Essential Mix".
Then, cool tracks and remixes. It's original (minimalistic way). Just one negative point : I feel that his productions fall level (and you, what do you think ?)
heres a tip trance from france..
stop asking the same questions, that everyone else ask, you guys do some of the most boring interviews i have ever seen.
maybe because Sander Van Doorn didn't ask to the most important and prefer answering questions like about Gouda (unfortunately). But what about your opinion on Sander Van Doorn ?
I've only seen Sander van Doorn at a massive gig at Nature One, I really like him, he also produced some nice tracks like Girl you lost to Cocaine, fucking amazing! Nice Trance/Progressive House Mix. I really love it =)
