Question about Sven

One of my mates pointed this vid out to me last night and I thought that since in the past 2-3 years there has been so much attention on this guy and the call to bring him here for a gig that I'd bring this video here. I'm just curious and this isn't attacking anyone but is this the sort of behaviour that everyone was making him seem like a legend? Is this the reason that there is such a big deal about him? I'd like to be enlightened on why there is so much fuss surrounding his presence on the decks if it be musically or not.

Personally, having followed his career for quite a while and being well informed back to the days when he played music in british train tunnels for raves of up to 2,000 people, I find him to be a pretty sad story. In my opinion, a grown man acting like this who has a teenage daughter should be ashamed of himself. This is not an attack on his music; although I find his music to be quite outdated and not very unique since it's just a delayed echoe of what other DJ's in that spectrum have already played.

However, I'd like some input on this as it pertains to the first paragraph.

Agreed. Sven's entertainment factor and the crowd he brings out more than compensates for his music being perhaps not the freshest out there.

you're an idiot. This man is legend and has been producing music since the age of 18 in the mid 80s. He can do whatever the bloody hell he wants. He was a figure which made the music what it is today. To say you have no respect for him would be indicative that you have no respect for the music you listen to.

as long as the quality of his set doesn't suffer because of acting like an idiot then fine.

I dont understand why people always associate acting like a baffoon and having kids as if once you have kids you cant have fun... I mean its one thing if he doesnt support his children and he is blowing rails in front of them but thats not my business anyway.

Everything that you seem to find silly I really enjoy..

He is silly behind the decks and engages the crowd with each performance.

The antics of the people combined with Sven make the party.

He may not bring the freshest music to his sets but is very active in keeping a forum open for new artists and sounds.

The Cocoon franchise has done loads for the industry. His party in Ibiza is one of the best and he truly loves the music.

Here is an interview from 2008.. give it a read to see his passion.

I have also read he and his wife welcomed the birth of their son this year.

I think you may take life and the music a little too serious.

I don't know if you're being serious or not because it would be very shameful if you are.

Sven is the Tenaglia of Techno. Pure antics

You raise a good point. He does go overboard every once in a while. I'd be quite embarrassed if my dad was publicly strutting his ass around in his pjs, while mangled on a cocktail of drugs. That's not an ideal father image, but then again we shouldn't judge. It's not really our business. He might be a good father.. who knows? He has been responsible in other aspects of his life, such as running Cocoon successfully.

Also, he's led a much different lifestyle than your average father. He's dedicated his whole life to electronic music; trance at first then techno. He's definitely a key player in edm.

Where did you hear 20s? I'm pretty sure he said "she's 13 years old, becoming 14"

Edit - OMG I just realized what you were saying....this video is from 2003. DUH!

its to bad that he dosen't really play techno anymore- seems like hes playing house more than anything lately, at least from what ive heard from him

If you think what he's playing is outdated you're essentially saying that Cocoon is an outdated label, which would probably one of the silliest claims that you could make about music possible.

Maybe certain tracks that he drops that are very quintessential Sven type tracks makes you think that what he's playing is outdated, but just listen to Sounds of the 11th season for example. What he's playing, and what he's always played is at the forefront of dance music (not just techno) in general.

Have you ever even been to a Sven party? It's not something that you can really adequately describe, you just have to be there. He's arguably the best DJ there is at reading the crowd and transitioning between genres in his sets. It's perplexing that someone can have such an insane depth of knowledge of music across multiple genres and put together sets like he does. It completely blows me away.

If he is having fun, and the crowd is having fun, what is the issue?

It is supposed to a party right? Not, lets get serious and play music like a robot gathering.

Posted by freakster on Nov-18-2010 20:35:

sven doesnt give a damn. hes totally out there. I like it cos it doesnt seem orchestrated like those manufactured acts like above & beyond etc..

Posted by samhouse on Nov-18-2010 21:04:

I'd say the more fun had in the booth by the DJ, the better the party. As long as you can still deliver musically speaking, go NUTS!! However the minute your effort behind the decks starts to suffer because of your antics, then you are probably pushing it too far.

So what if he has a daughter....who are we to judge how he brought her up...or what sort of example he set if we don't know her personally and cannot attest for how she turned out.

Sven rocks...nuff said

there's a reason they call him papa

am i allowed to post an old set in here?

he's not switchin' up the genres in this one
