Help - What turntable or DJ kit should i get!?

I'm new to Dj-ing and i would like a turntable - (I'm not sure the correct name - It's used to mess around with songs and you can mix two together or mess around with the effects)

Uhh a lot of things do that. You could be talking about Audacity, for example. Care to be a little more specific for what kind of hardware you are looking for? If you're just starting, with a tight budget, I'd recommend just a controller or something along those lines.

Your best bet would be to get a 2nd hand pair of technics 1200's if you like em sell them and get a new pair of m5g's. Next would be to get DJM350-400. A basic 2 channel digital mixer with effects.

You can always upgrade from there.

Get a NI Kontrol S4.

I sold off my 1200s and my DJM for a s4.

that sounds like good idea, are you comfortable with bringing the s4 to the clubs for live performance?

I personally don't play live but there are quite a few people who on the djtt and NI forums who do play out and they haven't really had problems. It seems the current best setups are with Macbooks and the s4 software. I've had some minor issues with the S4 on my C2D windows vista 64 machine (it generally works fine). I haven't had any issues with my MBP.

The S4 software is a great piece of software and the hardware is pretty great itself. If you're looking to spend a little money and want a great all inclusive package. I'd suggest this.

Anyone have anymore info on these, or care to share a tad more about them?

If you're totally new, you should check out something like THIS. Although software and a midi controller are a great option, I think it would be easier to use an actual mixer and some CD decks if you know nothing about software/MIDI. I mean, you don't have to install anything or setup any controllers, just pop in some CDs and turn some knobs- easy.

Might as well hi-jack this thread. Next year I'm going to be going back to uni and Australia from the states. My bedroom isn't the most spacious place so I don't have the largest area to put my gear. Should I ship over my CDJ's, or just pick up a smaller setup such as that MIDI tracktor one posted above or something along those lines

I had some what of the same issue. GF was moving in and space is somewhat limited. Having a huge setup of 1200s/Mixer and laptop wasn't pretty in our apartment. So i consolidated my setup for a Kontrol S4 and I can't tell you how happy I am. I really appreciate the Traktor S4 and what NI has done with it. Its only 19.7"x12.7" which is small in comparison.
