Domesticated's return! [3 hours - from deep house to laser-kissed trance]

It's been a year, but I've finally put together a new mix. A seriously unreasonable amount of money was spent at beatport in constructing this, so I hope you enjoy it. Otherwise, I might cry. No tracklist just yet, I want this to be enjoyed blind, as proof that I don't just play mouldy tracks from the same artists over and over. Hopefully there are some nice surprises in here. The oldest song in the mix is from '05, and the other 28 are from '08 or newer.

Although 386mb for the .rar? I know you're a stickler for sound quality, but a slightly smaller file for those of us who aren't would be nice.

Here are the notes I made while listening:

This mix is going to have to go somewhere special to have a good finale. 2.58: Oh dear.

Basically put, this mix meandered back and forth between interesting sections and very boring sections. The opening half an hour was pretty good, then it lost me and that was the pattern. I'd have preferred to see an hour of the chaff cut out of this. Three hours is a big number for a set intended to be heard at home, and it's very, very difficult to make a set that works as home-listening for so long.

I would like to see a tracklist though - there are plenty of great tracks in the good sections and I didn't recognise any of them. Could you PM me?

Thanks for the honest feedback. Admittedly I did find this rather challenging, but I wanted to try something of this length. I agree that it wasn't entirely successful, but I wasn't about to scrap something I've spent a month or so working on. I have other problems with this than what you raised though. I like the techier section, and I'm sure there are other people who will enjoy that.

It's unsurprising that you thought the mixing wasn't flawless. My previous sets have been completed on an expensive pair of KRK studio monitors. I moved to Berlin a few weeks ago, so this thing was done on a 9" netbook with an built-in soundcard and pair of headphones, which was an interesting downgrade. That said, your comment about the 38 minute mark wasn't correct - that track's bass is just like that, there was no layering of tracks at that point.

Your last comment made me laugh: "Oh dear." I don't expect many people to like the last 30 minutes, but that's why I kept it short. In the end though, the fact that you want to see the tracklist means I was at least partially successful. PM sent.

I know the transition wasn't at 38 minutes, but the transition into that track had felt badly EQ'd because as soon as that track's distorting bass starting coming in it felt overpowering. That's the kind of EQ adjustment you should have pre-planned from knowing your tracks.

Really enjoying this mix man. About 90 mins in so far, really liked progression, starting to get into the trancier tunes! I think I noticed that transition J mentioned but it didn't bother the flow much imo. Would love to see the tracklist.

It is indeed difficult to find 3 hours to devote to a mix, but I managed to find the necessary time to listen. I enjoyed it quite a bit. This is very much your sound, and I was actually pleasantly surprised to hear Zen Mechanics - Off The Grid thrown in there. I didn't mind the different directions taken in the earlier portion of the mix (particularly the techy part, I thought that was interesting). I felt it would have been more boring had you stayed on the prog house route for the whole first half, so a few new flavors are always welcome. I didn't lose interest during any part. The second half was my favorite though, lots of really nice trance, finishing off with some tougher and faster prog-psy tracks. The last track may have been slightly cheesy but it made me happy, so I didn't have any problems with that!

I thought the flow was nice and the mixing was solid, I heard no real mistakes. Perhaps there were a number of tracks you could have removed to shorten the length for easier listening, but it seemed to me that the length wasn't a detrimental factor to the set by any means, as the progression allowed for many different directions in flow without being too hasty. Remember that I don't intend on giving you or anybody else feedback as an "authority" on any kind of music, just as a fellow DJ and listener. You did a nice job, so take my review how you wish. Definitely something interesting for my mind while I typed an absurdly long Microcomputers paper. Cheers.

Listening on the way to/back from work this week so slowly getting through this.
Some great songs in here too.

i enjoyed and technically it wasn't bad but i can safely say that it didn't have any impact on me. nothing really grabbed me until the last hour or so. and you have balls on ending an epic type mix on a tune with a turd of a break and melodic section.

Thanks mate. I agree with you, I was a bit pussy with the mixing and was a little afraid to layer - as a result some of the tracks go on a bit. Cheers for downloading.

Again...I agree with your comments, except for the last track. I know it's cheesy but I still think it has a great 'ender' quality and a nice uplifting feel. Thanks for taking the time to listen to such a long mix.

i thought i heard some of subtles tracks in there. like i said in your december set. he's one of the most talented young producers in the cloud of amatuers signed on bonzai and he deserves the support
