So what is the big deal with the TSA pat downs?

So currently in the news and other media outlets it seems people are in a tizzy about security at the TSA.

I am sure that many people on this board have been more manhandled at clubs then the TSA is doing to people.

Do you all think people are over-reacting or so people have a right to be upset.

I would rather have the patdown then go through the scanner.

I think it depends who it doing the pat downs... if you are a woman you may not feel comfortable with a male security guard feeling your inner thighs.

A Maryland woman says she caught two male Transportation Security Administration workers eyeing her breasts before they pulled her aside for a pat-down at the Orlando International Airport.

"It was pretty obvious. One of the guys that was staring me up and down was the one who pulled me over," Eliana Sutherland told Florida television station Click Orlando. "Not a comfortable feeling."

The claim comes after several reports of people feeling TSA employees had violated their rights during pat-downs, including John Tyner of California, who videotaped his experience and can be heard telling a security official, "If you touch my junk, I'm going to have you arrested."

There was also outrage after videos surfaced of young children being given full-body inspections and when Thomas Sawyer, a bladder cancer survivor, told his story about a TSA official ignoring his medical condition, breaking the seal on his urostomy bag and leaving him covered in urine.

While there was a planned day of protest Wednesday � one of the busiest travel days of the year in the U.S. because of Thanksgiving � most media outlets reported there were few problems.

I don't think a pat down is that big of a deal...simply because it happens anytime you go to a club. I can see how some people would feel violated being searched like that but air travel is a privilege not a right....if you don't like it then find another way to get where you are going.

Club patdowns are a joke compared to the airports. When I was pulled aside at Pearson I had to take off my belt, shoes, shirt and walk through the machine twice before they felt I wasnt a threat.

I've never been patted down by security. I've had to take my shoes, belt and jacket off but that is common for every airport. Even in the US I haven't had any real problems with security....I guess I'm just not threatening enough.

I was leaving Vancouver and coming back to Toronto...they called it a random pat down

People are predicting that this year Turkey weekend, going to see more car accidents / deaths in recent years because of the TSA thing.

I have yet to deal with the patdown. Seeing this wasn't implemented when I was last in the US.

Many people in the US are pissed of the patdowns because they dont understand. All the terrorists get on a plane from outside the country. Last time anything ever happened... was back on 9/11.

Plus the TSA planning on using the xray machine / pat downs at harbours/piers/train stations/bus depots. The freedom to move freely soon will be gone and more people will die on the road, because they dont want people touching them or being radiated.

There will be very little to no increase in the number of accidents and to make the jump that this will create more deaths on the road is ridiculous.

You know, Guverment aside - most club pat downs are pretty non-invasive. Some of the TSA pat downs are - take of belt, shoes, etc, place your hands onto a counter, bend over, spread your legs - then rather thorough inspection of breasts / groin / etc.

and as I said, I can see how some people would feel violated being searched like this. If you don't want to be thoroughly searched then don't fly....pretty simple answer.

Belts usually have metal, so that's common everywhere.
Shoes, are also common to have to take off. If I recall correctly, everyone has to take off shoes, belts, and jackets and put them in the bins.

Shirt??? That's a bit strange though. If it was random, would they have made a girl take off her shirt in front of everyone?

Personally I don't really think it's that big of a deal. I'd rather be safe on my flight.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that if you're a woman, a woman security guard has to do the pat down for that exact reason.

I've been reading stories everywhere - a lady whose shirt was pulled down in front of the entire flight, exposing her breasts, a video of a younge girl crying in her mothers arms because the dude is literally sticking his hand down her pants, a boy with leg braces who was told to remove them, walk through the detector and he wouldn't be allowed to bring his braces onboard, while his parents kept saying that if he takes them off, he will never walk again (recovery after surgery)

one of the blogs I read, the girl posted pictures freely available online of people's bodies who passed through the new x-ray machine - so basically you never know when your naked body will show up online

it's a bit crazy me thinks :\

When has a pat-down stopped a terrorist attack?

new story i read in the paper....the guy had a pee bag and told the tsa guy about it and to be careful.....the TSA burst the thing and the guy == covered in piss. Well done!


I have no objections to the scanner/body scan. You cant recognize a person from it.

The pat down...wouldnt be so bad if not for all the stupid stories that are coming out. Of course with the added press, its like an invite for new whack stories!

Im sure i got a bigger pat down @ St.Andrews Hall in Detroit than any TSA will give.... im still alive! I just wish it was a chick tho....cuz that groin pat down was lol

I agree. I don't mind the pat down, but some of the stories that are being revealed cross the line of a pat down I think.

I dont think it matters. I have seen women being searched/pat down by men.

What you mention is insane.

Apparently those are the exceptions though. I saw a canadian newscaster who was in an Nyc airport and she thought/was expecting protests, activists etc. She saw nothing. The people she interviewed said 'meh, it's for security so it's ok'.

There should be a middle ground.

This might help to explain this whole pat down situation..

Funny how the Americans now complain about their rights being violated. They are the ones that after all wanted their government to do everything possible to prevent those "evil terrorists" to strike again. I say too little to late for complaning.
