car people - tell me how much this should cost
guy came back with an estimate of like $800, but now i'm going through insurance. what's the price to remove the streak?

I did full body work on my BMW (removed numerous scratches, 2 rust spots, gave it a fresh coat of paint) for about $1500, so I would say the guy is tryin to rip you off.

The car is a write off.

Sounds high but there are somethings to consider. First, a reputable body shop will want to do it the right way because if they cut corners it reflects poorly on their reputation. As a results parts plus labor are going to be expensive. The cheap way in this situation would be fill in the dent and a quick re-paint. The right way would replace the part and then feather the re-paint to the original which takes time and experience by a pro.
id say like $800-$1000
$800?? pfft more like 2 and a bush
800
have to fully repaint 2 doors and fix the dents

There's no puncture, so I don't see a ton of work, but, even if they just plan on touching it up, $800 doesn't sound ludicrous. Ask him what the shop says they need to do or, even better, ask for a copy of the quote.

Originally posted by trancypantzzz well it's going through insurance now so they will make their assessment, but i think $800 is ridiculous considering i was going 1 MPH trying to squeeze real slowly into a spot. this isn't a new car, it's a 2004 and i am unsure of how much damage besides the streak that i actually did. how could there be "dents" plural going this slowly? i drive a volvo, not a tank and there are no signs of the incident anywhere on my car. i will definitely consider getting a bike if this bullshit turns out to be legit.

Originally posted by geroin no, you are dumb if you don't realize that there is a difference between paint that was on the car since 2004 and new fresh paint. Any legitimate bodyshop will tell you that this will create different color shading on the door. From the pictures it appears to me that there is a slight dent/paint scratch so full repaint required.

Originally posted by trancypantzzz by this thinking, you would have to repaint the whole car because then you would have doors that are out of place with the rest of the car. they should be able to mix paint together based on the present color and diffuse it to fit in with the rest.
