Something I've wondered but never really asked, why is it when promo CDs get leaked onto the internet, they're always a variable bitrates at around 200kbps mp3 and never 320kbps?

maybe the label figures people will listen to the VBR and if they like it, hopefully buy the 320? No sense in paying for a VBR anyways, right?

If it's a promo getting leaked (i.e. not a real promo), it may have come off vinyl. No idea why people rip vinyl to a VBR, but that tends to be the case.

im more curious as to how all these site like electrobuzz.net, minimalistica.org , minimalfreaks.com stay open. I know they're not hosting the files but come on. The day something is released on beatport you can find them on these sites.

VBR 0 takes less space than 320kbps from what I have understood about it.

it's curious yes, VBR is like an intelligent 320kbps mp3, the difference between a Wav and a 128k mp3 is that wav includes all the frequencies from 0 to 40.000hz for example and 128k only from 100 to 15000 hz (this figures are not accurate, only for the example). 320kbps mp3 is almost lossless compared to Wav, what VBR does is adapting the bits stream to the different parts of the song, for example in the breakdown if there is only a pad and a drum playing between 1000hz and 5000hz the 15000hz frequencies could be bypassed.

VBR is similar to a 320mp3, is like the difference between Stereo and Joint Stereo, technology has become more efficient and in most cases you can have the same with less weight so i think the choice of VBR is only for distribution purposes and since promos get leaked so often a lot of people would buy the original to have a wav quality cd.

In some cases labels do actually release promos in VBR. M-nus is one major label that comes to mind here.

EDIT: Depends. First off, are you referring to really leaked or group-released mp3s? Because it's a big difference.

The trance-leaked promos you see on the net are usually leaked by Polish people on large groups forums for the sake of lulz or pure stupidity, and these are regularly 320 kbps and trance.

Other type of leaks involve the acquiring a promo CD ripping it as VBR, maybe because those people want to (illegally) share for people to hear then buy, or just so that they can rip into higher quality for the select few.

Have no idea about the last point tho.
