Don't Ask, Don't Tell - Your thoughts....
I have mine and will chime in after hearing some comments.
There's alot of people out there that are against gays & say things like "we should put them all on their own deserted island. That's crazy!
What we should do is allow them to serve & put them on the front lines. Use them as bait & decoys. Armor for our tanks. It will kill two birds with one stone. Drop fags not bombs.
jonSun raises many fine points but he fails to acknowledge the overwhelming success of projects such as Get Behind the Darkies and various schemes by Tyler Perry.
I really just want Jake Benson to come in here and say "RWANNNNDA".
I'm not telling.
So marines weren't gay enough ALREADY?
Don't ask Tbills.
Somebody told me, you had a boyfriend, who killed a whole village, of muslims in Kabul, Afghanistan last year.
I think it would hinder a units performance. There's a lot of people that hate gays and if your squad leader is one of them I would say you're screwed. Even off the field there would be a lot of discrimination, being put on working parties and what not.
I doubt anyone will actually "come out".
Nou is a fag
Mixing political correctness and war together isn't the best idea. I prefer to leave the greatest weight of opinion on the matter to the people who's lives are actually on the line. Too bad our politicians don't ever consider doing the same. We've heard from every politician and politically correct social engineer on this issue, both of which are never going to face the working end of an anti-American AK-47, so maybe it's time to ask the troops on the ground what effect the repeal of DADT have on their units:
quote:
66.5 percent of U.S. Marine combat forces surveyed by a special Defense Department working group said that putting homosexuals in their units would hurt their effectiveness in the field, and 47.8 percent of Marines in combat units specifically said putting homosexuals in their units would hurt their effectiveness in an intense combat situation.
I don't believe that the Military should be able to discriminate on almost any basis for its recruitment, but with that in mind I didn't see any problem with 'don't ask, don't tell'. It was a fairly encompassing policy that was, in itself, quite tolerant. Sexual orientation should be irrelevant- you're not going on a fucking luxury cruise. And yeah, just as Chris Crossland said, it could easily hinder unit performance. When it comes to things like skin colour and gender, it's all very superficial and obviously up-front, but it's still been a very large deal over the past century that continually becomes an issue time and again whether you like it or not. There is racial discrimination in the military and sexual discrimination all over the place, so now people are encouraged to be up-front about what they like to do behind closed doors? Absolutely unnecessary, and it obviously puts a lot of men and women in danger.
What do you do about showers? Quarters? Will there be segregation there? I think that this will simply put a lot more pressure on internal affairs, since they purposely train soldiers to be discriminate- that's what selective violence is all about. I just don't believe this is the civil rights cause and crusade liberal policy-makers make it out to be. It's painting a big, fucking red target on certain people, and the blowback (heheheh) is going to be far worse than they might accommodate for.
I could honestly care less. If one of my airmen in my shop came up and said "hey guess what, I'm gay!" I'd say in response, "hey guess what, you still have to do your job".
I think there's big differences between the services. but overall it's up to the leadership to squash it. It's obvious the marine Commandandt has said he doesn't like the policy. in fact he thinks that now it's repealed, there are going to be marines, "losing their legs" because of a "distraction". but Admiral Mullen from the Navy said he wants to see it repealed.
I've personally never deployed in an environment where I'd be sharing a tent or whatever with multiple dudes. so i don't know what goes on in that environment. if they were all sitting around and talking abotu fucking their girl friends and then one dude was like, "hey, i fuck my boyfriend", would all the straight guys beat him up? If they're professional human beings, they wouldn't. would the gay guy try to get some action? If he's a professional human being, he wouldn't.
I'd say about 90% of the folks I've worked with over the years are professional airmen and officers.
and what about up the chain? if my boss and his boss both came out, i personally wouldn't think any less of them. but i wouldn't think any more of them either. just do your fucking job and be a respectable professional and you'll still get my salute.
Upper leadership has a lot on their hands now, with this repeal being put into action. there's a lot of personnel issues to be dealt with. and not the issue of "every gay man wants to fuck every straight man" but legality issues...insurance money....marriage...visitation rites...on-base housing...lots of things like that. i don't envy them...in fact, i'm kind of glad i'm not in their position because no matter what they decide it's going to make some people unhappy.

Also, was it wrong to include black guys in the armed forces 60 years ago? I think i read that over 90% of your glorious troops thought that blacks most definitely should not serve with whites because it will disrupt unit morale, cohesion and god knows what else. Guess what, they put them in and people dealt with it.
I agree with you up until the point where you said "normal human reactions". I would replace that with "current American reactions". It will be interesting to see how it unfolds at the beginning and how long it takes to settle in.
No problem with it, gays are already serving and as far as I can tell they aren't causing an issue. I doubt that all of the sudden you will have flaming men in the trenches, because thats not what this law prevented in the first place. If thats a problem, its with the individual and I doubt that they would assimilate into military life from the start.
All this does, and I think this is the most positive, is take away the burden that if gay or lesbian service members are outed they do not lose their jobs. That takes a huge burden off their shoulders and probably allows them to do their job more effectively.
