what gives a track drive?
Hi people...
I hear alot of drive in alot of tracks...and with my own music, this is one element that is missing, from various feedback ive had confirming it to me...
I just wonder what it is primarily that gives a track drive..is it a concentration of "swell" on some notes....or...
Im sure this question/ answer will benefit a few more than me...so if you have some clues..we'd love to know..
thank you
I think it's more about how the elements work together rather than specific elements that can be added to any track to give it "drive".
Some people might think a pumping, sidechained pulse bassline is driving, others might think an interesting melody is enough to drive a track, it really just depends.
If you posted an example of your work we might be able to pinpoint why it sounds stale to you but we can't really explain all the elements that drive a track since it's both subjective and varies from song to song.
yeah..well..i posted this a few hours ago..and a fair comment came about drive...and also a few other things...

Wow, I actually really like that. The bass is kind of muddy, I think it's the sub. it feels really wobbly for some reason and doesn't seem to mix very well with the midbass.
You could use some more upper freqs overall, maybe up the cutoff on a couple of the background pads? I'm really loving your songwriting there, shows a lot of promise.
Just keep working at it. I don't have much of anything specific to point out unfortunately, maybe someone else does.
nice melody going on.. In your case I would let some more dynamics on the kick, and pan, eq, the cymbals so that the whole track breaths more.

Its not a drivey track to me, I don't think getting it really pumping would really help it's overall theme when you've got such a relaxed melody. Adding some percs probably wouldn't hurt, its hard to have drive without percussion. Also, most drive is created from the bass and drums and percs, not from the melody IMO. So maybe focus more attention there. But drive isn't always a good thing either, as a DJ you're often looking for something that feels uplifting or relaxing or stripped back rather than driving. |

Another thing that will help. The 1:06 snare, needs a tiny bit of presence, and work out the dry/wet levels.
yeah...i was just on that :0
awesome! thanks
May I ask you wich plug-ins you use??
Nice melody!
hey there...i don't use plug in's..i am using Reason...
and thank you..
I have a newer version now of this track..i tried to balance it as best i could....
I will post in a few mins

here is the latest...if im posting it the wrong place..let me know someone...i figured this would be it seeing as though this is where the discussion is....ive dont my best so far to balance things and keep it from clipping...i have noticed a few clip moments..but they are brief...so i didnt worry over them too much....
cheers
"Brief" clipping is still clipping, though, you don't want there to be any at all.
Also this isn't the best place to post music, that'd be the Promotion section, though we don't throw a fit over it. Just don't post every song you make here and we'll be willing to help.
I'd listen to the new version but I'm at work, I'll listen to it later.

I like it too, it has a similar vibe to Gaia's "4 Elements".
I haven't listened to the previous versions you posted, just the most recent one. I'd recommend pulling that percussive loop down a bit, it sounds a bit biting on my internet computer's speakers. The sound of it is good and should fit really well if you just pull the fader down a bit.

another personal suggestion, I would wait to put those hihats at 0.40 when the bass starts, anticipated with a short sweep
