Dunno Why do you Brits talk so funny?

[Disclaimer]Yes, I realize I'm an ignorant dumb American, so dont flame me, this is just a good natured thread and isnt intended as an attack on you brits.[/Disclaimer]

I've got a couple of friends who are brits and half the time I cant understanding what the heck they're saying.

1. Do they actually teach you in school to speak that way or is it just slang?

2. How come I can understand Hugh Grant? Is this cause he's Americanized?

3. How did you go from speaking like Shakespeare to this?

These are all the dumb questions I can think of now...
:-)

Posted by Technaut on Aug-04-2002 13:45:

awright mucker!?

They teach us slang in school since Primary 1.

Posted by whiskers on Aug-04-2002 13:59:

aye, these brits make me head hurt with their bloody talk.

btw, i think their going from shakespeare to this is a very big improvement!

Posted by Dj O'Callaghan on Aug-04-2002 14:03:

Its usually slang, as about 2% of the UK properly speak that posh gits English, and about a further 20% try to lol.

Hugh Grant speaks the posh English RP its called better know as the queens English.

haha I'd rather speak common as shit English which I do anyway since coming from a Working Class (blue collar) area, having a lot of family from Ireland to just chucks a couple of more slang words into it, I rather speak as common as shite, then speak like Shakespheare, ye olde English.

Nerds!

LOL

This is more an observation than a question, brit rock n rollers sing with out an english accent, but during an interview u can barely understand a word.

Here's another question:

Good thing they got subtitles for us yankees. Funny show!

Posted by kr00t0n on Aug-04-2002 14:50:

I'll take a british accent over a southern US one any day.
I still reckon english speaking South Africans have got it the clearest

Its because he's from Birmingham he's got a Brummie accent which can be quite hard to understand, also if u done as many drinks and drugs as Ozzy you probably would have slurred speech too. Same goe's for Keith Richards.

btw theres probably around 50 accents in the UK.

We Dutch start learning English at the age of 2 from cartoons. Everything is subtitled.

When coming out of kindergarden, Dutch children already speak better English than most college students from countires like Germany (where they don't subtitle but use native voices)

Getting into highschool the problem starts: Slang learned from TV against the proper English education...

Indeed it's hard to speak proper English. Especially Dutch people use both UK-English and USA-English mixed: lift/elevator for example...

Posted by TiestoFanMatt on Aug-04-2002 17:46:

ah shut ya trap all on ya yal have no ditsy wots u on bout!

hehehehe.... there's the queens language!

Is it true that everyone in America loves "The Naked Chief"?

I have friends (females ones ) and they say they love the english accent...so i **** give a rats arse if the lads don't like it, if the females dig it... thats all that matters!
Matt

i find most foreigners speak the "americani-english" rather than "english-english" if that made snese.

eg: i never see any foreigners say "arse" etc.

and hardly anyone speaks propper ffs!

I like watching Absolutely Fabulous on BBC. I've started to pickup some of the UK slang. I walk out of the house saying "I need some bloody petrol." I don't know what accent they have on that show but it's what alot of American's think UK people talk like.

I'm more inclined to think that UK people talk like the host on Who's Line Is It Anyway (BBC Edition, not the American one with Drew Cary hosting it).

So I leave you with...
OYE! Ya nocked me in de kissa

hehehe, Its pretty funny watching a white guy trying to pull off black hip-hop slang "Yo yo whatz up homey, Ight, much love brother", but I think it would be even funnier to hear an American try an english accent "First rate chap, how bout a spot of tea, are u lookin at me bum, i dare say me door dont swing that way"
LOL

I agree with you here 100%, you can't make the difference between UK and USA-English, unless you live or you've lived in any of these countries.
It's one reason why it's hard for us foreigners to speak english.
As for me, I've never been to the USA nor the UK, so...
In the meantime, I've lived in Paris for some years, and I learned some english there, so I used to have a terrible french accent while speaking english. Fortunately it's already gone now. (got back the hungarian accent, hehe )

Everyone here is talking about different "accents"... is that the same thing as all of the different dialects, for example, in Italy? That's cool, I never knew britain was like that

my dad is dutch... his english is really good.. he even corrects me sometimes, lol

Just a thought...

I'm in my 5th of Spanish and I was thinking about dialects. Spanish that is spoken in Mexico is vastly different then the Spanish spoken in Spain.

Example: The 'you guys' (third person, plural) form of a verb in Mexico would be Ustedes while in Spain you would use the Vosotros form. Also, the 'z' in corazon (heart) would sound like a "ths" in Spain and an "s" in Mexico.

Not to mention the different slang in the two countries. It's kinda like English in the UK and the States.
