Listen to this - old school kicks with tons of drive and vibe.

CONTEXT: - At a small gathering yesterday we put a few TA tunes through a new Bose system including a new wip of mine and they were ok at best.

Then we compared to old school house by people like the ahead of his time Tyree Cooper. Those tracks sounded a lot better in terms of depth and drive surpassing many modern tracks. Instantly people started nodding along in a way they didn't to any of the TA tracks we tested.

Now it may be just that the contrast between old and new was just a nice change hence the reaction but the contrast still intrigues me in terms of the percieved depth and prescence of these older recordings.

QUESTION: Listening to the kick here, what in your opine makes it so 'present' and driving?

I think I can hear a lot of mid knock and reverb?
I guess this is live played and the room sound is adding to the ambience - something I would like to emulate but not sure if your typical verb would be up to it.

its more organic (meaning live drums or acoustic drum-samples basically). i didnt like the track at all but i can totally see why most people like this better than the generic shitty synthesized house we have today. but there are tracks today that shine too using sax and contrabass for example. he probably use loops only i guess.

Maybe they just liked house more than trance, or it was more appropriate to the time of day? I don't love that track personally.

It's an acoustic drum, so it will definitely sound different.

What I'd like to know is... Which TA tracks?

I notice on a lot of these older classic house cuts there is often reverb on the mid bass too yet the tracks still sound pretty clean. Mmm perhaps a big desk and perhaps luscious outboard does actualy help you get this more dense yet open and deep sound.


I've gotton so into a clean minimal sound lately that perhaps the contrast hit me in the face more than it does others of you.

IMO reverb isnt bad on bass, just cut out the subs and keep in controlled it should sound pretty clean

Most dubstep tracks i hear have massive reverbs on basses, mostly plates

Well, first of all, the "ahead of his time"-sound you are referring to is probably because this is the DeepSoulCity remix. It was released less than a year ago.*

Secondly, trance is for laz0r arenas and cheesy ecstacy afterparties. Nobody nodded their heads to the trance because there are no head-nodding producing elements in trance. A gentle sway perhaps, but not nodding. And going from one of EDM's less groovy genres and directly to something of that caliber would indeed be a pleasant surprise for anyone.
