" Gettin' There" >>>> I think its done!

Here is my newest "in the works" track that I have really enjoyed working on for the last week. Been kind of slow on it but things really began to flow tonight as I began to structure it. I have not done any mastering, only some like eq work and mixdown between my monitors at low volume and my headphones. What do you think so far? the intro is definitely not finished, but I think I've gotten down the core of the song. Its melodic and a little driving!

sounds pretty good man.

Posted by Illumin on Jan-05-2011 17:16:

Thanks!
finally listened louder....a lot of eq work needed....especially to separate the kick and bass....going to work on the filter settings.....and of course levels

Otherwise....how is the structure, flow, elements, etc....?

Sounds pretty clean man, will give another listen when I get back home tonight.

Yeah sounds clean enough and pretty well done.

Posted by Illumin on Jan-06-2011 22:57:

Thanks! I've done a little rework to it. Haven't updated soundcloud yet...later tonight

So overall it is seeming alright??!
Thanks again

I like the track, and thank you for showing me that I could embed soundcloud files into TA. =)

Very nice!!

Glad you like!

Ok....here's a revision, I've redone the intro, edited some levels and automation, added and subtracted some elements here and there, and some additional new layering. Oh, and an outro.

Sounds pretty sweet

I can't really add much that hasn't already been said, but there was something in the back of my head saying that the track would work better a few bpm slower. Might be worth a try just for kicks!

Great work

bangin mate!

Posted by Illumin on Jan-07-2011 15:25:

I actually originally had it at 132 bpm and moved it to 134, i will shift it down and see....thanks!

Glad you guys are enjoying this? Anything/anyone else?

The kick is a little loud for me, and there are some DC offsets to correct with high-pass filtering. Also watch the hihat volume at for instance 5:51, though I would really need to hear it at a higher quality than SoundCloud's 128 kbps. Don't really have the patience to analyse everything in depth but I though I'd leave you with this anyhow. Are you compressing the master by the way? Everything is sounding quite tight, though that may be due to the kick being so dominant, though I really think it needs more dynamics for it to remain interesting. Or, like I said, maybe my patience is just too thin. Either way, solid track.

Posted by Illumin on Jan-11-2011 21:33:

Thanks for the input!!!

Actually, I have nothing on the master channel so this is pretty raw (no compressor, eq, limiter, etc....) I'm guessing the kick is definitely it. I am definitely aware of the lack of dynamics, it sounds really unexciting. I did a light master a couple days ago and it is still lacking dynamics, like everything is just playing but I don't feel anything. I'd be damned if adjusting the kick helps a whole lot.

Hats I think might be a little loud, but at that spot, I will try some automation to help balance, thanks for that.

for the dc offset, should I filter on the instrument track itself or on the master, both? i'll definitely play around.

Again, thanks for the constructive feedback, this is definitely what I needed

Well it's always a good idea to have something like Ozone on the master set to DC offset removal only, but in your case you need something that has more effect on the instrument's mixer track that's causing it.

I've got a couple of dc removal tools to apply, will pinpoint this, and then master. Thanks again! very much appreciated

Honestly I can't wait for the style of trance you compose to die forever. So feminine and just generally pansy, it's just so repulsive. Proof in the pudding is Trance in the last position at Beatport and Progressive House consuming Trance.

Nobody wants to hear 2005 trance. All the trance from 2004-2008 generally sucked. The kind of melodic trance you are writing was and is the downfall of Trance period. Harder trance is what survives, which actually has real break downs like house music or techno does, not some little girl display of her barbie doll collection. Go listen to classical music for a couple months; nothing on this earth sounds whimper then that style of melodic trance left the scene long, long ago.

Shit Armin wouldn't be caught dead playing that style of trance. You literally are writing in my opinion the worst electronic music ever conceived; ever. Any form of electronic music, anything is better then sissified melodic trance from ~2004-2008. Shit the specific style you are writing is more like 2003; shit buddy it's 2011.

So I've applied some HP filtering to areas to hopefully tighten up the bottom end, re-adjusted levels here there, especially on the kick, as well as some mastering (eq, comp, limiter). Feedback again would be great?! My concern right now is, since this track is a bit gritty, I know that makes use more of the midrange area (potentially muddiness) so I can't expect it to sound to bright as certain other tracks, which is fine for this, as long as its clean. Your thoughts? Thanks!

Would anybody be upset if I punched this guy in the mouth? Anyone?

I really, really enjoy this track man. The kick fits in the mix much better, and the track has an awesome flow to it. It does have a bit of a wall-of-sound quality to it because so much of it is in the mids but it's nothing too bad. I like the chord progression too.

Good work! I'm not the biggest trance fan anymore but it sounds like you've done exactly what you were going for man!

Posted by Illumin on Jan-19-2011 17:32:

As always, I much appreciate the feedback, no matter what kind! =) Seandroid: Thanks, and I'm happy for the enjoyment! I'm still going to work on some of the mids, The filtered bass sections might have to steep of a Q, and some of my layers could use less mids hopefully without taking away from the track. A tad bit more maybe for tightening the bottom end, and hopefully that's it.

Posted by Illumin on Jan-20-2011 05:58:

Alright, I think I might possibly be done. Anyone care to have some final listens? Track is a bit brighter, still some mids and warmth but better clarity, and a solid bottom-end. Thanks again!
