Whos production skills are you most impressed with at the moment???

For me its Alan Fitzpatrick, great sense of space in his tracks, doesnt use too many elements but the groove is always interesting

Great mixing of kick/bass/sub - everything seems to sit so well together, like its not forced, not too loud in your face but still substantial enough to be felt and be at the front of the mix

heres one of my fav tracks of his at the moment

Sons and Daughters. They finally managed to keep the tempo right and adjust all the instruments and vocals to not be false.

Heh, I've used that percussion loop in two of my other tracks before.

Maor Levi's probably one of my favorites in terms of production.

wolfgang gartner

Posted by Storyteller on Jan-10-2011 07:27:

Chris Reece/Daniel Portman/Leventina/EDX/Dinka/Passenger 10/Rino Cabrera/etc/etc/etc

Tight mixing musical in progressive, house, trance, techhouse and from what I believe to know about him a rather skilled musician as well.

If I'm not mistaking every track in this trailer is done by Chris Reece except for one. But he seems capable of doing way more than this :-)

StoryTeller, taste differs ofcourse, but for me, this is exactly the kind of fluffy shite that killed trance. It's that gay type of trance with no balls. It sounds like wet farts.... Would take Deadmau5, Mark Knight or Wolfgang Gartner anytime. And if it realy needs to be trance, then Simon Patterson or Paul Miller, awesome melodies and drive, while good depth in the mix.

what storyteller said, all those guys have the tightest sound IMO

Just tried to have a think about this and was surprised to find that very few seemed to stand out.

My record box at the moment is full of tracks by artists I've never played or even heard of before a lot of the time, only a few artists have made their way in there several times in the last year or so. So few artists manage to consistently impress me - which I think is because they might do one track which has exactly the edge I'm looking for, then everything after that, certainly for a while, just doesn't quite cut it.

Zombie Nation, Kiko and Alex Gopher have all featured a few times in the last year, but I'm not sure if I'd say any of them have particularly incredible production skills... it's more for their 'song writing' if you can call it that: good rhythms and good basslines.

FM Radio Gods have done some great stuff recently which is really well put together and varies from big room driving sounds down to some fairly chilled stuff, but all with dancefloor appeal.

Edit: got it - Pig & Dan. Wicked noises, great beats and consistently chunky as fuck

Just to add, blizzard, neelix, deadmau5, wolfgang garter, and nero(dubstep)..

All I can think of at the moment but for sure those are very good producers

Neelix, all day long.

I'd say it's closer to what trance originated from than what nowadays is called trance. I hate today's sound opposed to the old classics. Ironically this guy does Deadmau5-alike and Wolgang Gartner style tracks too.

Apart from that also pop-ish and rock tracks or piano-only tracks. I don't like saying these things, but this guy is the most talented producer I've come across in a long time. He has a more versatile portfolio than just about any dance producer I've seen around.

edit: Oh and this never killed trance. Trance committed a succesful suicide. Super saw era anyone? Now where's my milk?

And all those guys are in fact based around 1 person :-)

While we're at it. Skrillex is quite talented too

Maybe i should listen to his other productions then. seriously, could not comment too much on mix quality on my laptop an SC. but i was more reacting to the production type. that fluffy, just brabling along, while dropping a few lost piano keys, going nowhere, SHITE ASOT/Anjuna type CRAP. (but as you say , well produced as he hits the spot for many)

link something with more balls from him

Progressive House killed Trance?

Posted by Raphie on Jan-10-2011 10:08:

give it a name but that fluffy Robert Miles wannabee piano shit, they can't even play, they hit a few lost notes and think it's dreamy (they might be mistaken it with BORING) (though Children was a good song for it's time) is what killed it for me.

Now, take Paul Millers Benigna, that's got some testikels

Matthew Nagle is making me a little wet at the moment....

What do you mean based around 1 person? They are all different people and each have a pretty unique sound

If your talking about Chris Reece then, sure I guess I see your point. He owns unreleased digital and all the other guys you mentioned have many releases on that label.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-10-2011 11:16:

Surgeon, Session Victim, Nebraska, Eelke Klein, Claude Monnet, Vince watson, Alessandro Diga... So many others too.

It's all the same producer. No joke. I hit like 50% of them up a few years ago and I got 1 response saying: "Look you messages me X times now. I wonder how many more I can expect, regards Chris" .

And yes, they have a different sound in terms of sounddesign but the overal sound always matches with all these artists.

Posted by Owsey on Jan-10-2011 14:57:

Probably Helios. There's an airy quality to his tracks that works very well with me. He doesn't oversimplify things, instead he chooses the right sounds to begin with.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-10-2011 15:02:

Infected Mushroom--> Psytrance

Airbase---> Trance

Chris Reece ( i have heard he collaborates with EDX,Dinka,Leventina all the helvetic nerds in sort etc... half of the prog.house scene is him if this is true) ---> Prog.House

Techno---> Dean Newton /Eric Prydz.

Electro ----> Wolfgang Gartner

Andy Blueman / Hans Zimmer ----> Orchestal. (I still prefer Andy Blueman, he is amazing imo but we already have this discussion)

Drum N Bass ---> Pendulum.

Special mention to TyDi on the effects section and to Sander van Doorn for the unique atmospheres that his tracks have.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-10-2011 15:11:

there is a lot more of course but the big names of it are those around Chris Reece, there are good italian producers too Matteo Marini is another good producer.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Jan-10-2011 15:38:

Looking at your names list i think we have different concepts of prog.house, well i am indeed very limited, i like the swiss crew as you call them and very few other artists but Martin Roth, Jerome Isma-Ae and Jaytech i don't qualify them as prog.house, specially the first. Same goes for Matt Darey , if you are thinking in the see the sun track you have probably the sound of Aurosonic in their mind... and they're quite versatile in this aspect, that track is proggy but they have even big room tech trance. (Don't forget to check their remix of Aly & Fila - Listening if you liked See the Sun)

I like some tracks of the others from the list, but not as much as i've listened to Dinka, Leventina, Edx etc... in addition i haven't heard of this guys : Stan Kovlev, Loquai,Soundprank, Sunfriends. I like progressive house but i'm quite new into this genre.
