Side-Chaining

Most important step in music production. I've seen it used pretty easily in Albeton, however, in Reason, using (compressor?) it seems that the wiring method is a bit difficult.

Maybe we can discuss the different ways of side-chaining in both Reason & Albeton- perferably Reason =)

i have a suggestion for Diginut. BAN anyone who mentions sidechain again.

Oh, come on. Use the search function. There's a TON of threads which discuss it. Not that I've read them, but...

And placing importance on one technique above anything else is wrong-headed.

Half the groove from trance comes from side chain.

especially a technique which isnt important at all. just lay the baseline off the kick and your fine without it. you dont need that rolling shit.

That's the easiest- I copy the entire bass line, or whatever sound, and then move it over 1/32 or so to achieve the desired effect.

rofl. sorry man everyone knows how to do it, you dont need to try to learn us something as boring as sidechaining. its even in the Reason manual lol, try to read that. this must be a troll hu?

Posted by DJRYAN on Jan-13-2011 21:55:

No trolling, I've just taught myself what I know and sometimes hearing about different ways of doing the same things or even techniques that make what is done sound better.. Its all for the greater good of EDM Production.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Jan-13-2011 21:58:

greater good is whats good for most people. this is not it. and you thought yourself what you know? lol sigworthy.

Side chaining is far from the most important step in trance production

Dave is right. Why are you always right Dave?

if you aim to produce a very layered style such as uplifting trance you need to know how to sidechain, here ends being a trendy tool to become a handy tool in the mixdown.

Sidechaining is a lot like violence. If it doesn't solve your problem, you aren't using enough of it.

Eh? Did you just say that we need to get rid of the rolling basslines? That's one of the very few things that makes trance trance. Together with a 4/4 kick and lots of synth riffs, that's pretty much the minimum requirments to be count as trance. The rest is make it however you want it.

As for sidechaining, all it does is to make the kick drum become more audible and that's totally fine to me. Trance, heck, all 4/4 based EDM revolves around the kick, so it has to be audible. I always imagine the kick drum as the pounding heart and all the sidechained stuff as the blood getting pumped through the vessels.

However, there are a bazillion ways to sidechain your tracks and all I can say is, if you haven't figured out yourself your own way to sidechain, I don't see any hope in you as a producer.
