I saw it yesterday, but didn't want to be the ONLY person posting about the cool new products. I didn't notice the price, though. Ouch.

I saw this a few weeks ago and gulped at the price. If it had a proper multi input souncard solution then fair enough, but the you'r not get 8 channels of SSL for that!

Looks sexeh though!

That's exactly what I thought. If it had I/O for each of those faders (or at least 8) I think they'd be flying off the shelves but you can buy 3 x Euphonix MC Mix's and nice RME DA for that kind of money which equals similar quality but more faders and far more I/O.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-15-2011 05:27:

^^ Doesn't look that budget to me

Nice kit, but as RANN said, I'd want a full featured mixer/controller with integrated sound card for that price...

Sort of like this one, which is a lot cheaper and does a lot more... http://www.allen-heath.co.uk/uk/Dis...t.asp?pview=115

Don't worry, guys. For those of us who aren't billionaires, Behringer's got our back (list: $2499 USD). It might be Behringer, but this thing looks the biz.

They're not overrated if you would benefit from them and use them. which I would.

Blah blah blah, new hardware. Sure is convenient to not have to lug around 200 lbs of equipment for music production anymore. Now I just have a mac book pro, audio interface and midi controller. Travel back in time to 1990 when you had to buy stupid gear.

Besides who justifies buying that piece of hardware? Either you are a hobbyist and don't need it or you just trying to show off, like mastering engineers with analogue processing equipment (which half of them don't even have and just process the audio on the computer).

It's so much BS. It doesn't take money to write music. It takes time, patience and dedication. You need a computer, a keyboard and a audio interface with some halfway decent speakers (not even monitors man).
It's 10 times faster to just compose on a computer, rather then run to synth's, record audio and lalalallalaallalal.

Crap I'm so used to drawing precise volume levels that I don't even see how one of those would be useful at all for mixing. I mix to -5 RMS with peaks hitting just below 0.0 DB. How the F would you ever get that accurate with one of those stupid devices? The funny part is I bet you can't mix for shit and your the one posting needless gear to make yourself feel better about it.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jan-17-2011 22:36:

can your computer handle 250 + audio tracks ? There is a world of music that isn't EDM and people like to use different tools. The irony of the individual you speak of and your pointless insult is quite funny. I wouldn't go making fun of people's ability when your lack of ability is so clearly available to the public. Also are you like 50 ? I think it is time to throw in the towel. I mean i took a listen to 3 tracks and I would really tone down the arrogance as you suffer from a lack of ability talent and since being mean is the flavour of the day, looks. You are quite the ugly mother ******. I mean it is hard to judge my fellow man being extremely attractive myself but I am rather good at placing myself in the boots of an average looking man, say RobbyRox, then judging the person based on par. You have a boogey of 10 and you wear stupid hats. NOt the kind of hat that says I make techno but more along the lines of , I like to camp or I rape children. You untalented ugly pederast.

Is this analog like the ssl 4000?
If not I would not buy it, if a had the money to buy a ssl console.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jan-19-2011 08:39:

lol, let us know when you got 80 000 in the bank.

Posted by kitphillips on Jan-19-2011 09:32:

He's right though. SSL built their reputation on analogue mixers, and now they're trying to sell a glorified midi controller. Its a bit of a rort IMO.

i have a feeling ATX is drunk again lol.

Posted by studiobob on Jan-19-2011 12:48:

for a cheaper option look at the SSL X Desk - 2000 ish. sounds phenomenal. ok so you dont have the sequencer integration and midi control but if you want the SSL mix bus 'sound' then you cant really go wrong.

and yes we've got one last month

Posted by Raphie on Jan-19-2011 14:11:

That's a totally different product

Nucleus is a midi controller with stereo monitoring bundled with native Duende plugins

the X-Desk is a REAL mixingdesk with 16 inline inputs, buss mixing and extensive monitoring.

What is that 'SSL sound' like? I honestly don't know - I'm guessing like those classic 80's Queen or Sade tracks? Would a budget SSL have that sound (although I still could not describe 'that sound' if I had to)?

Posted by studiobob on Jan-19-2011 15:00:

the x desk has the same pre's as the bigger consoles and same summing as well. (or so the marketing would have you believe anyway) the nucleus has 2 pres in it as well i believe. just my thoughts on the nucleus was that it all seemed a bit unnecessary really... the duende plugins were released a while ago and would have thought they would have been surpassed by UAD/waves etc. cant see a serious studio owner using it, though would be good good someone with more money than sense entering the world of production for the first time and wanting a good all in one solution...

SSL sound? never used the big consoles so cant comment, but having used the xdesk and also 2 SSL eq channels i can tell you it sounds really good! far better than mixing ITB at any rate. can hear how digital cubase sounds compared to it...

I've been considering moving up to one of those after buying my Alpha Channel a few months. For guys like Richard, you may want to consider the Alpha Channel for tracking vocals (it's a mono channel strip) if you're ever in the market for a new preamp. They run about $1K USD, but I got mine in like-new condition, only a few months old for $550.

Posted by Raphie on Jan-19-2011 16:14:

i got my first alpha channel unit last week, have now ordered a 2nd so i can use them stereo in my mastering chain as well.

a SSL X-Patch is next, together with an API5500 EQ and than that's it, i promise (FAAT FAAAAAT soundz coming up )

Yeah, because those are the only two types of people making these days, right. For the record, the OP (DJ RANN) falls into neither category and obviously has far more talent and knowledge than you will ever hope to have. (facepalm #1)

No, you don't need a computer to make music. You only need a computer to make yourself look like a moron on the internet. (facepalm #2)

Wow, you must be awesome. Mixing with your eyes is definitely preferred over the way a guy like DJ RANN (who is a pro working in an LA, btw) does it. I mean, who the hell uses a fader and mixes with their ears anymore? Seriously, if you've spent any time making music, you know that mixing with your ears is FAR more important than drawing precise envelopes. Besides, if you want to talk speed, let's see you draw 5 or 6 envelopes as fast as RANN can automate them simultaneously using faders. And, his results will blow yours away because, in addition to having far more experience and knowledge than you do, he'll be focusing on what really matters. (facepalm #3)

So, let's give those tracks of your a listen shall we? M4B doesn't speak very highly of them, but he hates everything , so let's see for ourselves.......Ouch. Yeah, he's right.

Newb, here's some advice - assuming that you're not just an alt/troll, you are clearly very new to making music and have a LOT to learn, not only about making music, but also about respect for your fellow musicians. Regardless, you are not qualified to be hammering other people on music forums. I mean, your tracks are nothing more than poorly mixed Vengeance drum loops with a Nexus or Sylenth1 arp over the top, repeating ad nauseum with nothing interesting going on harmonically, melodically, or rhythmically. I mean, these are just bad and they sound like something a 13-yo who just downloaded his first cracked copy of FLS would make in about 30 minutes (probably not far from the truth). I normally wouldn't even bother commenting on something this amateur because everybody has to start somewhere, but your attitude is in severe need of an adjustment. There's hardly a drop of musicality involved, and, if you've got any of your "precise envelopes" in there, they aren't doing much to save these amateur train wrecks. Of all people, you really should be the one thinking about how much better your music would be if you stepped away from the computer and learned a thing or two about playing an instrument and mixing.

it was famous because it had a compressor on every channel. QUeen was probably recorded on a Trident Console but that is just a guess.
