::::::::. **** TA Genre Challenge, Round 5 **** .::::::::

Round 1
Round 2
Round 3
Round 4

Due to popular demand, here's round 5. Most of you should know the rules by now, you suggest a genre, get assigned a random one and deliver a mix. For those, let me just point out the most important rule: YOU HAVE TO DELIVER YOUR FUCKIN MIX!!!

For the others, here's the extended version:

Step 1: Registration
If you want to participate post in this thread and name a genre that you want to include in the challenge. This must be a genre that is not already named by another participant. Use only EDM genres and don't select anything extremely weird, rare or specific. I'll keep an updated list of accepted people and genres. You can't add a genre without participating or participate without adding a genre. Also, post in such a way that your intentions are clear.
Registration will be open until next Friday (28.01.) 13:00 (UTC+1:00).

Step 2: Drawing
After the registration closes there will be 24 hours of time when you may do two things:
1) Withdraw from the challenge. (If you don't like the genre list, are too busy, entered accidentally, etc.)
2) If you have successfully participated in a previous round you can name one genre from the list you do not want to mix. I'll consider this in the drawing.
Entering is not possible anymore in this stage. The drawing will be posted on Saturday (29.01) 13:00 (GMT+1:00).

Step 3: Mixing
Your mix should be between 30 and 80 minutes long. The deadline for submitting them is in 4 weeks, on Saturday, 26.02.2011
You're also supposed to offer the person who'll mix the genre you brought in some help if required and give him a short feedback on how well he did.

Hard Trance (and I'd love to get it) .

Edit. I respectfully decline anything with 'house' that isn't served with the prefix 'hard'

I'll go with Funky/UK funky, as much as I hate the name for it.

Best to enter with the difficult genres on the last day, I'll do so myself with Humppa.

I'm not exactly sure what that is. Could you post a source / sample of what defines that genre?

Also, this round is not UK themed.

I thought it'd grown in popularity enough, seen some threads about it here, but sure:

I was afraid it might be quite close to UK Garage (which is already in) but I guess it's OK.

Braindance (early 90s IDM like Autechre & Aphex Twin). shouldn't be too hard to find stuff like it. it's very flexible too, so incorporating techno, electro, or whatever else kinda weird from that era you get your hands on is fully cool, cuz it was done that way anyway.

Schranz / Hardstyle.

Edit: Add Hardstyle instead of Schranz.

Psytrance. Hell I don't know. Can't think of anything else atm.

Let me briefly remind you all to stay a bit more mainstream.

The appeal of this should be people working out of their comfort zone, say a typical Tech House Hipster doing Epic Trance. It's not supposed to be people struggling with obscure stuff and when there are too many difficult genres no one will enjoy this.

Ok i catch the idea, say Hardstyle instead for example. Maybe you could modify the terms so you assign 2/3 genres similar enough and the person selects the one that he feels more comfortable with but at the same time excluding his favourite genres.

In any case thank you for the contest.

disco. and no, not italo, or nu-disco, i'll accept using boogie but not the stuff that more or less sounds like (proto)-house. i mean disco. i will accept people using subtle edits for mixability but no fucking full on revenge/todd terje/prins thomas/who else reworks.

I wasn't specifically referring to you, but if you want to change then that's fine.

About your suggestion, I don't really understand what you mean...

I jammed myself , ok being more specific. If we keep this genres that some of them might be a bit obscure as you say. You can suggest aditionally a similar genre in addition to the random one.

For example:

Guy 1: YOu have to mix tech house or Techno.

Guy 2: YOu have to mix Hard Trance or Hardstyle.

Just making it a bit easier if you think people may have a hard time making a mix of some genres.

And who exactly said they will be "struggling" with this "obscure stuff" from these "difficult genres"? Just because you haven't heard of some of these genres before doesn't necessarily mean others haven't either.

Just put IDM then, no need to make it more complicated than it is. Braindance was merely a moniker Rephlex used as a protest against the term "IDM", which most of the world will use to describe that sound regardless.

You should attach old competition links in ur first post - ppl might find it helpful.

I don't think there is too much of a problem with genres. Last time I got electro, which I never listened to expect for a couple tracks here and there, and I found a bunch of very nice stuff cuz of all the suggestions given.

It doesn't matter if I have heard of something or not, but if there are too many less known genres in the list chances are very high that people who have never heard of them will draw one of those. And then what happens it that they don't post a mix at all or some half-assed attempt that completely misses the point.

It looked to me like you were judging whether a genre is "difficult" or not on the basis of whether you'd heard of it or not, but fair enough.

Either way, the main problem with people not delivering mixes is either that they don't have time to do research or that they simply don't like the genre they get. This will always be a problem with this challenge, and how well-known or obscure a genre is will do little to change it overall. The only way to counteract the issue is the veto and that people are sensible enough to withdraw if they don't feel up for the genres involved.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jan-23-2011 21:26:

Don't like the genres mentioned so far, so I'm sitting this one out.
