The US says "at least we aren't Mexico" and Mexico says "at least we aren't Guatemala". There will always be someone out there worse off but you gotta keep comparing the country to ones that are doing better...

A colleague was just telling me about a funny court case in the U.S.
A girl was texting on her cell phone in the mall and not paying attention to where she was going. She tripped over a small railing that was surrounding a fountain in the mall. It wasn't very deep, so she was able to jump out quickly. But she's now suing the mall and security guard company b/c they didn't help her fast enough and b/c they laughed.

She's suing them for putting the security video up on YouTube...

Haven't you seen it???

It's pretty funny...

10 days in county lockup for 4 years of safer education for my kids??

I'd do that over and over again...

This is interesting to me; my city and one other city in the US allows kids to go to whatever school they like in their city, but the busing takes for-fucking-ever. I went to a really good school for 4-5th grade, and had to take 3 buses a total of 2 1/2 hours to get there. They said it was a way to give the economically disadvantage kids access to better schools, and the rich white kids access to some real street cred

I wonder if she'll sue everyone else too who walked away or chuckled. Besides, its not like you can even tell who she is in the video... good job of hiding your shame by drawing attention to your plight. God I hate this place. Her stupidity NEEDS to be broadcast to the world, maybe then she'll pay more attention to her surroundings.

By sending her children to a different school district she was essentially stealing education (not paying the proper amount of tax for the district her children were attending). See, in the US the schools are divided into districts; the tax burden of residents in the district she sent her children to school in is higher then the taxes she paid; subsequently, the residents of the district she sent her children to were subsidising her kid's education... it's TAX FRAUD.

Half the people in the mall didn't even turn around and look! Geez. She needs to learn to laugh at her own stupidity. Ya I'm sure it was embarrassing but come on. I've laughed at myself for nearly walking into a wall when texting.

Both solid points from different sides of the fence. Being a clinician/therapist at an alternative high school in the Bronx, I work with kids who are super-low income, have massive social and behavioral problems, etc...My school had a meeting last week in which it was threatened to be shut down and some of the points in the meeting were showed that the school was:

-in the lowest 2% of success of all NYC schools.
-in the lowest 1% of safest schools in NYC
-180% over max capacity
-over 50% of teachers are substitutes (read: no education required)
-and only 23% graduation rate



Aside from the written statistics, I can tell you that I have:

-never seen a text book (we have a library w/novels, but no text books!)

-never seen a teacher stay more than 2 years before they have a complete meltdown (not only from the bad ass kids, but from the fact that they just cant TEACH with no supplies, overpopulated classrooms, and super-low earnings!) For instance, how can our Cooking teacher cook with no food? LOL (that class is hilarious, btw!)




Now, as much as I hope and pray that this type of school can turn around, the workers are fully aware that there needs to be MONEY to have the tools needed. And where does that money come, when VERY few people in the Bronx own a home, let alone have any sort of livable income?



Its a totally f*cked situation, because these kids crave a good education but will never have it....I really get why parents lie to get their kids to better schools, they would love nothing more than to break the cycle of non-success in their families.......But, at the same time I wonder if tax fraud/free loading on education is the healthy way of going about it....something else needs to change!!

What exactly did she want the security guards to help her with anyways, standing up in 5 inches of water?

On another note, I just saw in the news yesterday that lawmakers are trying to pass legislation (I'm not sure if it's just in NY or in the US overall) to ban the use of ipods or mp3 players while running outside. Apparently listening to music makes people run into the road and get hit by cars

didnt hear about that one, i know in nyc they wanna ban walking and texting (def wont get approved) but i honestly think as shown in that video before texting and walking dont go hand and hand

i remember over the summer i was waiting at a cross walk in the city and some girl was walking and texting not paying attention and walked right into traffic...if i didnt grab her and pull her back she would have been plowed down by a garbage truck

me personally i try to avoid it as much as i can, even driving and texting i stoped doing, its not worth it

ah I see.. I didn't understand where she went wrong
in Ukraine we also have schools assigned to certain areas and you can only go there.. we literally had 2 schools across the road from each other, yet I couldn't go to the other school.. it was a nicer school with better teachers but the principle wouldn't budge!
