The IPAD Thread...

Bring it. Tell me why I should buy one. Or several.

Prove it's worth it as control surface.

Seen this but I reckon it's going to be turd:

you can do anything as it runs with osc. YOu can pretty much make any template you want. There are no restrictions. Now have 3 of tbem and there is your console. Can have a screen for each instrument you want to customize. Literally hundreds of instant templates depending on what you want to do/

So the logic controller has got my interest piqued.

That video looks like he's running/controlling logic on the ipad in realtime, and from a quick google, it seems that's not actually possible.

AC7 looks viable but the lag on those faders does not look sexy to me.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-05-2011 02:54:

touchosc is really the best thing.

It is truly outstanding. There is no latency well noticeable latency.

some templates

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-05-2011 04:11:

also , because the logicpad template really integrates with logic, it will display the actual FX on the ipad so you can run 64 bit, and not have to worry about opening the plugin via the bridge as all the valus are listed in the template to edit. just sick,

That iPad dj thing was horrendous. Thank god I don't dj anymore. I'd have to kick my own ass if I used iPads as quasi records

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-05-2011 04:41:

well touchosc kills any controller there is on the market. It really is that good.

TouchAble is fun for Ableton users. I've used it in a few live shows with some great results.

You can read and post on this forum from the comfort of your bed.

this is obviously the direction things are going so might as well hop on board

OK, so touch osc looks like way lower tactile latency - does it read the automation as well?

Are there skins for it? I way prefer the look of AC7 (i.e real desk or mackie control).

yes and yes

AC7 doesn't receive information at this point so it is kinda pointless. ProRemote is probably what you want but it is 99$. Again it is just a more traditional 32 channel control mixer.

I'm sure the AC7 will update soon enough and be able to receive information but right now touchosc is the best app, the most responsive and the oldest. MOst of the other softwares are barely a few months old.Lots of bugs.

Well the updated AC7 receives info now but you only get 8 channels so it is pretty useless.

those sort of apps are just games if you ask me. Gimmicks that have no real use. THey also perpetuate the myth that the ipad cannot have real professional use in a professional studio.

Posted by meriter on Feb-06-2011 19:42:

give it a few years

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-06-2011 19:48:

people will have touch screes for their computers by then. The ipad is not going to get any bigger. You can't do anything on a small screen other than use it as a controller, not a full fledged DAW. The current Ipad only has 256 megs of ram.

They are working on some implementation of USB soundcards for audio recording. That will be neat for musicians that want a quick mobile recording setup.

honestly, touchosc is really the only app that really works well in a studio. The rest are too bug ridden and gimmicky but touchosc is just really that good.

So I bought this tray that kinda holds the 3 iPads and I use 2 as remote screens and 1 as a keyboard mouse controller. Did about 2 hours of work in my bed. The image and sound gets potted to the pad so even if your setup is 2 rooms away, you can still work.

Now they need to make a. Wifi espresso machine and I can spend 80% of my day in bed. No but seriously, working from home is one thing but doing it in bed in the winter is way too awesome

I'm still in my pjs and it's 5

Posted by Zak McKracken on Feb-08-2011 22:55:

could you post some screens of how you work? if its possible to printscreen on iPad that is. i tried iPad in the store today and i didnt really understood what i needed it for lol. but still want it.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Feb-08-2011 23:03:

i would wait until june if you aren't quite sure as that is when version 2 comes out.

Here is one screen. Basically a touch screen monitor. Not that I would work like this everyday but I was tired and it is cold. Basically my 2 mac pros can be controlled completely by the ipads. I can even control them from a remote WAN. how cool is that. producing on 2 mac pros in like a coffee shop.

TO be honest, just one would not really be handy as it is too small. But 3 , 2 acting as screens and 1 acting as a controller and don't forget you can have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse as well although the mouse is not officially supported and you will have to jail break it and install some upgrades.

The resolution is 1024 x 748 for each ipad so honestly not bad at all at with the controller pad, it really isn't that hard to do things. Again not like I would work like that every day but it is pretty fuckin awesome that Ihave access to my studio anywhere I go. If I show someone something and they want a small change, boom, load the project right there and do it instead of going home , or doing it over the phone.

And everyone i've shown have completely tripped balls on how cool it is. I mean I suppose a laptop can do stuff but I have 2 mac pros worth of power in my ipad.

Already here...

Funny Pictures

and....

Funny Pictures

But in fairness, I do think think that once they have the mouse and peripherals sorted out it's going to unleash a lot of power. The fact you can control other macs remotely is going to be huge for the production market.

It's weird, two years ago, my boss paid a ton for small touch screen controllers, with software built by one of his in house guys to do what the ipads are now doing, but I have to admit it looks like the ipdas are going to do it that much better.

Fuck, just think of a couple of mac pros, in logic 64 bit node mode controlled by a few ipads.
