Compilation Royalty Question

Does anyone know how much someone would make as the sole producer of one track on a series like Global Underground?

Do they get a per cd pay (like .03 a cd) or a lump sum like 250$?

I understand it varies from label to label, series to series, but if anyone has any specific examples I would be very very interested ie: "When I was featured Magik 3, I made .01 a sale"

ON a traditional CD with lets say a retail price of 12$, the artist royalty is typically 27 cents. So I would not be surprised if the royalty is pretty much close to 2 pennies of which your publisher will take half. lol Awesome!

You would typically demand royalty points and an advance because given that nobody buys cds, I wouldn't really put your money on the cd actually selling. Not to mention there are all sorts of backhand scams like 10% of cd sales being defects so you only get paid on 90% and they might also say 10% were given away as promos thus you only now get money on 80% of the sales.

Absolutely right. I know a few years ago, you used to get a lump sum advance and then royalties if the track was signed to a big compilation, but that was when CD's actually sold.

You'd also get a much bigger lump sum of the track was one of the featured ones, like used on the advert or radio commercial to sell it.

Eurocheese producers like DJ sammy etc, actually made most of their money from their tracks being signed to tons of complilations, especially all those dance ones europe (seriously big business in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Netherlands etc).

When I say 'CD' I also mean mp3 download comilations, such as the ones Markus Shulz puts out often (Miami 05', Prague 11', ect) I am sure they sell decent as well. Ferry Corsten put out Once Upon a Night 1 and 2 in a span of less than a year as well (I assume due to success of the 1st).

how much do those sell for ? Do you buy them at beatport or itunes ? I actually know very little about how these new internet download systems work. Anyone know some good literature on the topic ? I imagine in a way it is simpler but then with all the cross marketing, it can get quite complex and mirky.

I think it just all depends on the label. My former music partner and I had a track on a Ministry of Sound CD compliation and it was a lump sum that we just split. In contrast though I recently had a track appear on an Armada CD compilation and didn't even know about it until after the CD had been released. In other words I got nothing.

Thanks for the two real life examples. I assume on the Armada compilation the label your original track was on made money though?

i have a track in a to be released compilation. I expect nothing. There must be people who not only they didn't earn nothing but also incurred in costs.

I'm sure they did but for me to get paid, I think that is what is known as 3rd party licensing and that is something I did not work out with the label. As I understand it, if you want to get paid on CD compilations or a new compilation that uses your original track, you must get your label to agree to offer you some kind of 3rd party licensing deal.

Awesome. That is the kind of stuff I am wanting to know. Hopefully you will get that in your contract from now on.

i chat with greg kobe/robot needs oil quite alot, he told me he got aprox 5000 euros from the track volta"which was on 17 complilations.

My mate used to know Mike from the commercial dance music group, Ultrabeat.

They had several tracks that charted in the UK, one at no.2 for several weeks. They sold their tracks to a ton of compilations all over europe and got major radio play with "pretty green eyes".

Mike reckoned, that shortly after Pretty Green Eyes had been and gone, they had made about �3m, which he was getting the bulk of as the songwriter, producer and singer.

Granted that was back in 2003-2005 but still, that's a lot of money for some cheesey dance records.

Pretty Green Eyes is the bane of my life, that track used to get played wherever I went out for several fucking years back in my hometown.

I like some cheese, at least it's memorable and distinctive. Most EDM just all blends into one and cannot be engaged with by a busy public bombared with marketing messages and tweets.

Cheesey dance is a bit like a Hollywood blockbuster - easy to engage with. Few people want to watch a film about a Chillean homosexual peasant - it's too obscure for the masses.

CHeesy dance is like a Michael Bay movie. Big difference.
