Floating house

Want.

What a ridiculous waste of time and money.

Firstly, unless you're outside, you can't see that the house is 'floating'. Standing in the main room would feel exactly the same as standing on the second story of any house with panoramic windows.

Apart from that, the design itself is crap. After digging out a huge amount of earth and inserting concrete support for the cantilevered section, they filled it back in and then purposely built an angled section over the top. As a result, that section of the house is now filled with pointless stairs. The bedrooms are shit, too. Who wants nothing but frosted glass seperating them from other guests? It's supposed to be a house, not an office.

If the home that you want to build for yourself is exactly how you want it, it's not a waste of time or money. Oh, and perhaps they purposely built an angled section over the top of the cantilevered section to hide what's actually keeping the house "floating."

It's not magic, it's an illusion.

You, sir, are not too bright.

Pointless stairs?!?!?! Please god no!!!

It's a cool looking house for people to look at. Yes, standing in that room would look the same as standing in the 2nd floor of a normal house with panoramic windows, if you never go outside! This isn't fucking architecturecritics.com, it's just an interesting house to look at.

I'm quite sure my understanding of construction techniques involved is greater than your own. Unless you too have a university education and four years of industry experience, that is.

The non-floating section didn't have to be angled in that ridiculous way; it could have been recessed into the hillside or placed abreast, on a flat plane.

The stairs aren't only pointless; they'll become inconvenient pretty quickly considering the occupants are in their sixties, and seem to think this is their final home.

Yes, it's interesting to look at, if you go outside to have a good old roll down the hill, as sixty year olds do. It's also impractical, which is what counts when you spend 75% of your life in a place. Don't get all bitchy just because I disagree that this is a cool project.

House on the Rock is better, imo

Maybe the people paying for the house...........wanted it that way

Yeah, and I like Falling Water a lot better too. I wasn't claiming that this house is the best house ever made, or really claiming anything about it at all. Just posting something for people to look at.

Oh, and for Domesticated to show off his big, bad University education and four years of industry experience.

Well hey, if you have the money you can pay for what you want. Perhaps the house just up the road doesn't have the illusion that it's floating, or maybe it's just not as nice of a house.

Anybody out there who lives in the Berkshires want to comment on the quality of this house in comparison to all other houses in the Berkshires?

Domesticated? Surely with your four years of industry experience you should be able to afford a house of such stature. I mean four years?!

Good recovery.

Also, Domesticated, it's their vacation home. I would see where your points would have a lot of merit in regards to the everyday dwelling of retirees, but vacation houses are the perfect places for gimmicks imo.

My only issue is the idea that it can hold "60 people comfortably." For people with that lifestyle, 60 is a manageable dinner, not a big event. What if 20 fatties show up? I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing for a party unless it could support 500 Australians.

Only one thumb up?

That is my max for sober posts.

Are Australians really fatter than Americans? I find that hard to believe.

Robbed by an ex-detective pimping a monstrously plump 15 year old with fat braids of red ribboned black hair dangled about her bald toy doll. Perhaps I should marry, for my own safety.

I dreamt of home back in Sunny. I had snuck out of my room to demand a goodnight kiss from Mama, which had been denied me for Father would have been annoyed by my kisses on Mama in front of their guests whom they were hosting at the dining table; and as I was not yet permitted to stay for the whole dinner I was sent to bed at the midsupper bell, 'against my heart.' Yet when my tears were pardoned by Father, and Mama, obliged to stay with me during the night, did so without scorn but with a maternal love which made me feel small, I felt shame; a shame in front of women my entire life - yet, girls...

Meditated on a 'Floating house' thread on TA today; I often feel we (the Girl with One Sock & myself) live in a lighted house of glass, & that perhaps any moment some thin-lipped parchment face will peer through a carelessly unshaded window to obtain a free glimpse of things that the most jaded voyeur would have paid a small fortune to watch.
