Looking for an old Thread about mastering...

It had this video with this guy talking about how he masters. He talked about serial compression and had a shit ton of customized outboard gear. He writes techno.

Help would be appreciated.

lol why is 50% of the threads about mastering? what is it that makes people wonder so much about this when they cant even do a proper mix?
i just cant understand it, it doesnt make sense. its like worrying about the frame around your painting before its even painted. i know its good to have the goal in mind when doing something but seriously, it doesnt mean you can skip the rest of the progress. think i need a break from this place.

The reason I ask is because I want to try mixing with compressors on the 2 bus, and he mentioned how he sets up his compressors.

Very important, read again HIS compressors, Why would u think his settings would apply to your VSTi's ?

suggest to start reading about WHAT compression does, how to work with Threshold, Attack, Release, Ratio & gain. far more interesting than having Rob explain the sweetpsot settings for HIS specific track on HIS VariMU hardware unit......

You guys all want shortcuts, there aren't any, learn the foundations so u can make informed decissions....

There was a centre spread mastering article in FM a few months back.

They had a track mastered by the following;

1) Was done by a mastering pro at Abbey road, London, using sexy retro gear

2) Was done by a mastering pro using outboard and software including Brainworx

3) Was done by Jono, one othe FM journalists at home using only Logics standard dynamics tools.

At the end of the article people voted option 3 sounding best.
I think there was to be a follow up vote in the following issue but I did'nt spot it.

Quite interesting I suppose.

Yes, have read that one as well...

but there was a bit more to it, the thread was on GS as well.

I have this nice Ableton compressor and it can emulate any compressor there is!

Peak, RMS, or Opto mode, hell yeah!

I just stare at the GR meter. Seems to work out okay.

I rather do it blind, your audience has no GR meter either
meters are good to check when you hear suspicious things, but should not be leading. good to keep the overall picture, but i rather dial on hearing than following advice to cut with -6db GR, just becuase you heard that value in a youtube video
