The next biggest thing? A Tablet!

So, iPad, Motorola XOOM, Blackberry Playbook? HTC Flyer?

Any have one? Want to get one? Personally, I don't really need another device to get me on the internet to waste more time out of my life, but they seem to be very interesting this year compared to last. With new features that hook almost anything like your house lights, to garage door openers, to wiring money across the world.... these things open up more possibilities on how we interact with high (current) end electronics. Even NFL coaches are embracing the use of the iPad for plays and strategic plans. Watching movies gets you to ditch that net book with a lighter and almost/ just as good battery life in a tablet!

I have people in my classes now using them... mind you i had bashing on the touch screen to type. Not ergonomic at all.

The reviews came out on the Motorola XOOM, and the only thing I don't like is that it has its own proprietary charger... don't want to carry that around. What do you guys think?

XOOM is looking pretty sexy!!

It will be the new thing that will become e-waste for sure!

Justify price? At $500 its the cheapest one out of the bunch! It's pretty much a bigger ipod/phone. The new ones being announced on Tues will feature a front and back camera for facetime, no button (even on iphones/ipods!... soon be out this year....) and will be thinner.

But don't hold your breath people... the ipad 2 is scheduled for announcement and will probably be available in a month... BUT!!!!!!!!

the ipad 3 will be out in the fall (sept/oct). Why? because apple will want to keep in line with everyone else releasing a new version of a tablet. so that if they release the ipad 2 in a month.. it wont be another 16months for a refresh. so they will do 2 launches this year... im guessing the 3rd ipad will have an sd card slot. thats when ill want one.

but by that time will probably get a xoom or playbook. we'll see!

The new ones are much cheaper now.... for what i got for my 15" you can get a 17" fully loaded and cheaper!

I paid $3300 with a student disco in dec 08 for the first unibody. now i just did the calculations and man is there a difference. they are quad core i7s now! and it features new thunderbolt technology which should be nice. and the sd card slots (they kill me) are something im still lacking on mine. but my macbook pro is still holding up nice for renders and stuff.

Same here Jay..

It's a cool device and all but its really just an iPod Touch with a bigger screen and I just don't need it since I already have an iPhone...

A buddy has an iPad and it's pretty cool to play with...

Can definitely see myself getting one in the future...

I just orderded a Notion Ink Adam:

Smokes the ipad, same guts as the Xoom and most other high-end Android tablets coming out.

But, it also has:
- HDMI out
- USB hosts
- swivel camera
- Pixel Qi screen
- ability to be used like a drawing tablet

Tablets may have their uses, but I still prefer a laptop for general surfing, for one major reason: If i'm sitting on the couch, I could navigate and scroll with small movements of my fingers. Two-finger scrolling and other gestures. Doing the same thing on a tablet requires me to move my arm all over the place to click links and navigate. That gets old and tiring. Not to mention the whole uncomfortable typing situation, taking up half your screen real estate.

And FYI if you have an iPad or tablet of some kind and fly on a plane, invest in a stand of some sort or else you'll be stuck holding the thing the whole time.

I have been playing around with the BlackBerry Playbook, very slick device! It's a true multi tasking machine and with the new QNX operating system and teh new UI company that RIM bought TAT, this thing is going to be huge.

I had quake 3, 3 HD videos and 5 apps all running at the same time. With HTML5 and Adobe Flash support this thing blows teh Ipad outta the water. I can;t comment on the Android device but anyone who gets an Ipad is retarded.

Not only that but with Adobe Air and the new QNX system apps are so eay to make and you will see all teh same apps for BB as there are for Other platforms.

with it being just an oversized ipod is the reason why i cannot justify the price considering i can get a macbook pro starting at $1250 and can do MUCH more with it (ie. work on my photos in photoshop)

if i could get a good tablet for ~$300 then i would consider it.

I've actually been thinking about a iPad recently just for having one around at home on the couch. There are numerous time when we are looking something up or what to access the internet without having to pull out the laptop and booting it up (or seeing it on a iPhone).

But now this makes me think maybe it's not more convenient...

My laptop wakes from sleep in 5 seconds or so, so I just use that. Tablets would do well for that casual couch situation, where you're consuming media, casual information. If it communicates flawlessly to your TV, so you can browse media on your tablet and display on your HD screen wirelessly via set top box or similar, I think it would be worth the $500+. For me, I would need software that allows me to use my media, and not be tied into Apple's media eco-system though.

If you want to use your tablet on your lap:

It comes out in April, and is doing pre-orders now. I'll probably get one; ingenious little thing!

Posted by gimmebeatz on Feb-25-2011 16:39:

the only thing missing on ipads are a disk drive along with the new improvements as mentioned already

Posted by Jem_hadar on Feb-25-2011 16:56:

I'm thinking for this coming Christmas time I hope to pick up an Android tablet at last.

Cant wait to see what's on the market then... so many amazing devices have been announced and previewed at CES and MWC so far this year!!

LG has a wicked-ass glasses-free 3D Android tablet coming out too...

Congrats, been reading quite a bit abt the NI Adam. The swivel cam is a cool inclusion.

As cool as that is, I would be weary of having that on my knee because it looks like it has to be COMPLETELY STILL in order for it to work.

Very cool concept and idea.... and probably a must for tablets now (since docking and stationary positions like having it on a table or something is now necessary while you eat, sit or whatever.

Tablets are the new laptops that look great in your new condo on a kitchen counter, desk or coffee table!

Posted by GGM on Feb-25-2011 17:14:

No need for one in my life. You can do pretty much all the same stuff on an iphone as you can on the ipad. The stuff that can't be done on the iphone I just use my computer for. No real need in the middle for me.

I think the tablets have a purpose out there (ie mobile work such as construction, healthcare, etc.) but I think right now it's being overhyped and all the manufacturers are hopping on board in hopes this will be the next big thing. At the end of the day you'll still need your phone and laptop and I just don't think the genuine demand exists in that middle range.

There's also been no foreseeable solution to the typing on the screen deal, it just plain sucks. And once you try one of the keyboard attachment solutions you might as well just be on your laptop.

I've been using my kids iPad since last June.
First of all, it's great for media CONSUMPTION.
If I want to do actual work, I'll just fire up my desktop.
Second, it's like newspaper or magazine, you don't need to turn it on or login.
Grab and go.
Which is very convenient.
Also, you never have to worry about your battery, or where you can sit, I can just use it while I'm cooking or watching morning news.

I'm with Jay on justifying to spend $500 on it when you can get a laptop for that money nowadays
for quick browsing you can always use your smart phone

I played around with iPad at our hotel in Ottawa and while it was great for quick searching and email check ups, I found typing on it quite uncomfortable
navigating between tabs was a pain - I missed the tabs of firefox or IE

for reading stuffs at home I'm still all up for a laptop, it's fairly easy to move it from couch to a desk or kitchen counter and on the go browsing - any smart phone will do just fine

Tabs are huge for me. I can typically have 5-10 tabs open at a time, using middle click (mouse) or ctrl-click (trackpad) to surf with great efficiency. Using a tablet just seems slow and inefficient, even if individual pages open quickly.
