A.Skillz is back? in the Orange Room?!?

this has 'party of the year' written all over it! he was sooooooo good last time I heard him (with Krafty Kuts @ El Mocambo).

expect a whole lot of funk, hip hop, breaks, mashups, even classic rock remixes.

I honestly can't think of a better person to launch 'the return of the Orange Room', lol!

the remix of California Soul (3:15)...

awesome.

this new mix is a great example of his range over the course of a full set. so good!

Ya MarkT

Its going to be redonculous. Askillz is bouncing back from the tragic loss of his son last year and is on the road to show people why he is regarded as one of the best in breaks.

I needs to hear the review please!!!

now that my monster hangover has lifted...

you know how some DJs put out good sets, but then when you go to hear them in a club, you're disappointed because they played completely different stuff? or they're boring, appear uninterested, or simply are better in the studio than they are live?

yeah, wellnone of those applies to A.Skillz

started off boozin' with some people after work, but I couldn't persuade anyone to tag along, so I arrived solo and a little later than expected, around 11:30 I think and unfortunately only caught the last bit of Farbsie's set. I'm really not a fan of going to clubs on my own, especially when it's unlikely I'll know anyone there, but proceeding to get sloshed pretty much erased any concerns, lol. there was a pretty good crowd, but it was never near capacity. while promoters may not appreciate that so much, I'm glad to have the breathing room.

A.Skillz was his usual fun self, spanning five decades and multiple genres of music, all rolled up into upbeat, funky breaks and mashups. where he comes up with his combinations, I don't knowbut they're brilliant. he's one of most talented and creative DJ/producers out there IMHO, with a good chunk of his set being stuff he's tweaked or put together himself. he plays much like what you'll hear in any of his recorded sets or radio appearances, which is definitely a good thing.

ran into a friend from high school, but otherwise I was in my own little drunken world of happy for his entire set, lol. it was just perfect and I couldn't ask for better music. I stayed for fair bit of Chu's set and left a bit before three (I thinkI was trashed long before that point). walking home probably lessened today's consequences, lol. I hope he makes Toronto a regular stop. it's nice to see him back behind the decks after what must have been an awfully difficult year...

thanks to the Make it Funky crew for putting this together. hopefully there will be more funk and breaks in the Orange Room this year!

so I take it that no one else made it out? you missed one of the best!

next up, though it's not the Orange Room, but I'm too lazy to find the breaks thread (btw, does anyone know anything about the venue?):
