Ziptnf - Flow Control [psytekk/tech-psy]

I spent a great deal of time planning this mix, and I'm really happy with the way it turned out. This set means a lot to me as a computer engineer and EDM enthusiast, because I feel like this reflects who I am individually. I named the mix after the computer science concept, which I studied extensively in a course on Networking principles. Logic design has always been fascinating to me, as the mix cover is a MMU (Memory Management Unit) and the signature represents part of an actual diagram in a project I completed for Microcomputer design (interfacing a 68000 with an interrupt driven Centronics parallel printer port circuit).

Flow Control covers a healthy territory of music, starting with a slow, minimal approach, and evolving into a very maximal sound as the mix progresses. Toward the end I start layering on some very thick, heavy basslines. This mix has all kinds of flavors that most TA's are into (even the slower folk like Adam, Oscar and Stu will find that most of this mix is at 128 BPM ). It has intelligent sound structures and a wide range of ideas. This one is my longest mix yet, so strap yourselves in and please enjoy!

Very interesting tracklist. I almost didn't click on it because "psytekk" sounds like another fucking stupid psy sub-genre, when from the looks of this it seems quite serious.

Yeah, I don't blame you. That's sorta what people call this sound, as it's not really a specific sub-genre. I could call it "tech-psy" or "psy-tech" but it doesn't really make a difference, now, does it?

This is my problem with psy-trance. No matter how much I like certain artists or tracks, too much of it is blighted by this insistence on being geeky and cheesy. "Psytekk" sounds like something made on FL by a 15-year old who calls himself DJ Venom.

Incidentally, this rant has nothing directly to do with your mix, which I will listen to.

Ill give it a go tho, i think this is one of the first mixes of yours ill listen to so i dont know what im headed into

I gave this a listen Zip, but I have to say I didn't enjoy it much. It never felt like you got a decent flow going, which is somewhat ironic given the title. When you brought the third track in, I was surprised you were escalating things so quickly, and then you dropped back off again. The opening was just:

Ambient tune
Clicky dark tune
Proggy tune
Fuzzy happy tune
Glitchy tune
Dark tune

No cohesion at all. It wasn't until about 45 minutes in you got a string of darker, moody tracks together and it felt like things were where they should have been half an hour earlier. Then you stepped the energy up quite rapidly but stopped it with that glitchy orchestral interlude and completely reset the energy with the next track.

I can understand you were trying to cover a lot of territory and show different sides of this sound, but I don't think you pulled it all together successfully.

I had a feeling you wouldn't enjoy it, as you never seem to. I tend to put together sets with tracks that I like, even if they aren't all similar. You're right, though, a lot of the tracks don't flow like they should in a traditional sense, but I felt they flowed in terms of the elements present. I knew this going into making the set, that it wasn't going to be a steady progression, and I felt that was acceptable due to the wide variety of signals MMU's and logic gates process. The beginning set of tracks were 128 BPM, and the last set of tracks were 139+, so I put in the Access to Arasaka track to bridge them.

I believe some parts flow well, even if the whole set isn't completely cohesive. Do you not feel as if there was a decent flow from:
Ambiently Speaking -> Suffocate
and
Minimum Orchestra -> No Sense?

well, i've listened to the mix, i liked it. regarding jacks comment about flow, i got the sense of flow on the second listen the first listen it sounded all disjointed but i wasn't really paying attention, it was just on in the background and it then became just fodder.

however, not all the tunes were to my liking, i think mixing was good apart from one transition that was a tiny bit off. this kind of stripped down psy is hard for alot of people to get into, like for instance i know sand leaper have a deep hatred for the stuff but i tolerate it when it's put in a right context and it has a groove. otherwise it's just random casio twerps on top of a pulsating kick drum.

Sorry zip, I feel the same way as the others. The flow is just all over the place. Up until the 16 minute mark, you built a nice mood, and I was expecting it to start getting darker and harder. Then, the next track was some happy ballad which made me feel like I was watching a montage in a Michael Cera movie, or else listening to the closing track in a commercial house set. It just had this carefree finality to it.

After that, it got super glitchy and lost it's way. The next track I liked and thought got the momentum going again was around the 55 minute mark - the acid one. The one at 61 minutes was pretty cool, too. After that...meh. I only like about 1 in 100 dark-psy and psy-tekk style tracks I listen to, so you didn't have much chance of succeeding with me.

While overall this wasn't my thing, my feeling is the same as it was for your last set. You're trying something quite different and mostly doing a good job of it, which is more than can be said for a lot of DJs.

Indeed. The first full-on track I ever heard blew my mind (and continues to). Up until that point I'd only heard very maximal hard trance, which didn't really have a strong focus on production quality. To go from that, into this well engineered, stripped-down, rolling dose of mayhem was a day I'll never forget.

From that moment on, I became obsessed by that style of bassline, diving into everything I could find and not paying attention to much else. This was all cemented by a trip to Thailand, where I danced non-stop to psy and took shrooms to my heart's content. However, a year or so after that, I got over that type of bassline and realised just how fucking geeky a majority of the genre is. Even the really great producers still can't help themselves from including ridiculous samples about drugs, space and reality, et cetera. Though there is some good stuff, on the whole I've given up on psy the way I have with club trance, and that includes progressive psy too.

Sorry, fellas. I probably should have left out Minimal Symphony, but I couldn't help it, that track just makes me so happy It was probably that track that completely threw the mix out of whack.

Yeah, I like to experiment with different styles of psy, and they may not always work, but I hate doing the same stuff over and over. A majority of full-on and prog-psy is complete garbage, with no imagination, so when I find a group of tracks of a similar style that I enjoy, I try to make a mix out of it. Because of that, my flow may sometimes suffer. I appreciate you all listening anyways, and 3 of the most intelligent members of the forum attempting to listen to 100 minutes of my crap makes me feel somewhat special.

Don't write me off yet, the next mix is going to be something totally wild

One more bump before I let this one die. Any more comments?
