Swoon by the Cloon - New Contest (sample edition)

This one is a quickie.

2 weeks

make noise that lasts no longer than 1 minute.
Everything has to be sampled including any synth sounds except use of granular synthesis.
This is about showing how clever you can be with a sampler or granular synth.

Winner gets a new Time Capsule 2tb
If you don't like it , you can always sell it online for at least 300 $ .
Contest starts now. PM me the finished work. Voting decides winner. Only open to people in continental america. Poles may not enter.

Oooh this will be good! I'm in.

PS - Your photoshop skills are A++

Sampled as in sampled by the competing artist, or sampled in general? My upcoming release is samples only hehe.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-03-2011 23:45:

this is a noise contest. max 1 minute.

I think MeanLikeSheen's synth snort down will follow and then Wet4Jet's Ninja Olympics.

Is this previously existing sampled material or does a piano sample pack, played on a keyboard count?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-04-2011 00:52:

the point is to show creativity using a sampler. I suppose i mean fx and production tricks as opposed to actual music notes although you can use tones if you want.

(

Not trying to be a PITA but its hard for me to be creative unless I have strict boundaries set, like exactly what we can/can't do.

So its samples noise/synths, but not in a typical musical format? I just need more rules is all. Can I take a sampled sine say and make a kick out of it? Can I use the noise to make a drum beat? Or are you looking for something less resemblant of actual music and more abstract/creative? (I'm assuming thats what you're looking for)

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-04-2011 04:26:

I don't really care. I'm not voting. I think I was quite clear. Be clever with a sampler. Under one minute.

Hmmmm....I usually hate the idea of "competitions", especially remix competitions, but this has me intrigued - mostly because I recently found a very cool (and free) granular toy that I've been wanting to get to know a little better. If you guys are nice (i.e., let me win), maybe I'll tell you what it is.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-04-2011 05:15:

its really not meant to be serious. This is like a 4 hour project type thing. Not having to make an actual track is much

also, trance artists need to stop thinking about melody and harmony so much and start using their samplers in a more interesting way.

ok tell you what , to make it a little more interesting, only aloud to use 1 sample. Everything has to be some sort of sample trickery with that one sample

and the prize is brand new ie still shrink wrapped with full warranty so it is worth about 500$.

create a new user name if you don't want your artist name to be associated with a competition. I understand that.

Interesting ! can i sample music or do i have to use only one sample ? IE: make a tune out of a snare drum sample (that would be awesome) or it doesnt matter?

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-04-2011 05:32:

ya. the point is to be creative with sampling. So one sample. What ever you want it to be. COuld be a kick drum or a loop. And under a minute.

anyone know what shipping to europe would cost ? If it is under 50 I suppose i don't mind if euros have a go.

Exactly what I was looking for.

Good job.

no criminal check either

And if 10 people submit work , I will give out 2. So odds are pretty good. No i don't work at mac, my boss/colleague gets all kinds of freebies and sends them my way when he doesn't want them. I have 2 apogee duets but I sold them but Ebay is so damn stressful that maybe I will just have contests for this stuff. I hate being lowballed. Unless it is a reach around.

I think the next big one will be a substantial prize of around 1000 and similar to the last but maybe more organized. My girlfriend will be in europe so I will have some free time and I will be out of work for 1 month when I do my yearly visit to canada so I don't get arrested.

So one sample, and granular synthesis is an option? Sure, why not.

Totally agree with all that. Trance got boring when the sampling got stale.

I'm going to try and actually finish this one this time, there were some great entries in the last one.

I just want to impress you, I will do it just to hear "This is Good" from you, deal?

Cheers,

Darek

I think it would be neat if the original sample was posted so we could see how the producer transformed it.

Posted by ReclusNdangrmnt on Mar-04-2011 21:32:

I'll give it a go!

Posted by EddieZilker on Mar-05-2011 00:42:

In.

Posted by mathieu on Mar-05-2011 01:00:

Are you guys gonna make trance? i allready sent in my tune but its not trance at all

Posted by DJ Robby Rox on Mar-05-2011 01:23:

Yeh this is really cool I'm liking this concept a lot.

It was between sampled noise or a sampled nord sine I had and I went with what I could manipulate the most which was the sine.

But its really eye opening just to see how many sounds you can actually get from a simple sine wave. Now I'm on youtube trying to get percussive tips (never done anything but a kick from a sine) so it'll be real interesting to see where this goes.
