Trying to re-create this effect

The filtered pad starting at 1:00 is simply amazing and is perfect for a section in my mix. It seems to be a fairly common effect, so I'm hoping someone here can offer a few tips or simply describe the effect/methods.
Very much appreciated!

Make a nice saw patch on some synth. Put the notes on the kick and in between the kicks and apply ducking on the synth sound triggered by the kick. Done
.
Oh and of course slowly open the filter cutoff every now and then.
I already have all of the notes in place and in sync with the kick. I'm just having a difficult time finding the right sound.
I'll try out your suggestion, thanks a bunch! =D
I've completed the track and I thought I'd post it here.

Would anyone be interested in some creative/constructive criticism?
This is my 3rd serious attempt at producing a track, so I know there are parts that sound weak (some due to my impatience for wanting to just post the track) which I intend to fix soon. Once I pick up a few things.
I wasn't entirely successful in re-creating the effect at 1:00 of the original song, mostly because I couldn't find the right SAW effect.
Appreciate any insight offered
Cheers!

Bump! ^^ Halp meeeeeeeeeee
what vst instruments are you working with?
I used Rez v2.0(for the melody), Superwave P8(For the strings), and Synth1(For the attempted effect at 1:00). I probably tried every preset to no avail. Much of this song was from me settling on a sound.
Ah, synth1 should be really suitable for the sound you're looking for
. Give me a few hours (my work needs to be done first!) and I'll help you out
.
For sure! Thanks, I appreciate it!
This is how my attempt sounds http://www.storytellermusic.nl/Untitled.mp3
Synth settings for Synth1

It's far from perfect, but reasonably close. Only had 30 mins
. What I did with the above preset is the following:
- I took the root note of the melody and copied it to 1 octave lower as well for the synth to have a bit more beef
- Then sidechained the synth to the kick.
- Highpass filtered it at around 110 with a 36dB slope.
- Added a slight reverb (used Nomad Blueverb)
- Added another delay plugin (Ohmboyz), set the delay to 1 beat
- Added flux Bittersweet for a bit more timbre (free plugin, highly recommended!)
Other than that I just opened the filter a bit in the clip
.
Of course there is an offbeat bassline in the clip too, I did that one with FXpansion Strobe.
Good luck.
That sounds great! I'll give it a shot =D
Let me know if it works out for you
.
Ok, already I can hear a huge difference in the sound. I copied the settings of your example with an initial patch. I just have a quick question about the high pass filter.
I'm using Ableton Live 8 and it has a couple of filters under its EQ8 audio effects menu (Like ultra high & Lo-Hi Shelf). Would these be acceptable, or would I want to use something particular? I'm currently side-chaining to the kick through the Auto-filter and that sort of sounds right.
Thanks again!
nah, any high pass filter should do. I just chose a really clean sounding one.
I think my problem here is my inexperience with filters. I've tried a few since this morning and none are really giving me that sound I'm looking for in conjunction with the patch.
I'm going to see if I can do some homework on this and perhaps make something happen =D
Oh btw, which filter did you use on your clip?
Cheers!
The built in filter of my sequencer (Renoise). I'm afraid you can't get it unless you make teh big switch
. Not recommended, Renoise is not for the faint hearted. It's butt ugly.
With all of the insight here I think I'll be able to sit down and figure it out after some hours of practice/research.
Thanks again dude! Really appreciate the assistance!
I'll post the remastered track once its done.
Cheers!
