Will old record players scratch my vinyls?

I've been a CD-DJ for a while, but recently, I've purchased a couple of vinyls and so I decided I'd buy a second hand record player before I save up for some MK3's. The player is a Kenwood KD-64F (typical old record player) and it's got a standard needle in it. Anyway, what I want to know is, if I play my vinyls on a crappy needle, will my vinyls get scratched/have their life shortened. Thought I'd better check it out before I potentially destroyed my entire collection :-)

make sure the needle is still good tough , but you'd notice that with some crappy sound

+ don't get to ruff on old non dj decks ... they can't handle the pressure and abuse if you start trying to back spin, cue by hand etc .... they're fragile!
