hugh lecain did this about 60 years ago but better. Basically a keyboard where you could move up and down but also sideways.

Jeeez I remember using the Akai Linn MPC series drum machine. Heck I started with an Emu Drumulator. Tech-mology has come a long way!

This layout is available as an ipad midi controller. Though i can't remember the name right now.
