My brother is in Kobe and said he didn't feel it, but he said people in Osaka, just a few miles (well like 100 miles) away felt it.

God just watching these waves.... Its insane! Its just eating towns!

My buddy's girlfriend is over in Tokyo. This is not good.

Lira last I know of was in the Nogoya area, far inland, he wouldn't be in danger. Miyagi is very far in the north. I am sure he is fine.

I have several friends in Kochi, I hope it's far enough south that it didn't get hit too hard. I'm waiting to hear from them, I'm sure the cell networks in Japan are going crazy right now, so getting through with e-mail may be tough. :/

Posted by LAdazeNYnights on Mar-11-2011 07:39:

omg that's terrible
i was about to post in the c0r about how my house started to flood a little bit and i spent the past 2 hours battling back water that was pouring in at 2 small spots, creating maybe 5square feet of damage at the most

that's fuckin terrible, so depressing to hear. wow

Posted by Joss Weatherby on Mar-11-2011 07:46:

Heh, Tokyo seems to have faired pretty well, reports are people are already returning to work, not more than 2 or 3 hours after the quake.

Posted by Lews on Mar-11-2011 07:46:

Shit my best friend has a lot of family in Japan. Hope they and everyone else there are okay.

Posted by MiB on Mar-11-2011 07:49:

Shit my cousin lives there. Hope everyone in Hawaii will be okay, too.

I just shudder to think of what's going to happen to the countries that aren't so well prepared as Japan and America when this hits them

Posted by Acton on Mar-11-2011 08:22:

I can't bring myself to leave for work..... I think i'll work from home today.

I just hope that everyone on the Pacific coastlines get the evacuation warnings in time, I mean, it's nighttime that side of the world, right?

8.9 is huge for any country. Honestly, if an 8.9 quake hit here in LA, I don't even think our building codes are up to snuff for that level of shaking. Japan is pretty much the only place "prepared" for it.

Tsunamis are something you can't even prepare for, though, you just have to get out of its way. Scary stuff.

Try and get in touch with him mate, but I guess you're already doing that.

And yeah, I'm worried for all the small pacific islands, like the ones in French Polynesia and stuff. Some have maximum heights above sea level of less than 2/3 metres, not even that!

They won't stand a chance if warnings don't get to them in time

I cant imagine we'd be that well of, compared to the Japanese. When I was over there I was taking special notice of their earthquake infrastructure. Maybe it was because I was in Kobe, and they did a lot of rebuilding, but almost everything seemed to be built to withstand earthquakes. All the highways and train bridges/elevated railways were built to sustain a large a quake. Not at all compared to a lot of parts of Seattle or Tacoma.
