Should promos/advertising be restricted to a single thread?
I am generally not a fan of mega-threads, but I had this thought a while back and now that it has been officially suggested by another member, I think it's worth getting some feedback on.
I think that promotions of things like online discounts, new plugins, sample and patch banks, etc. are useful to us - they are relevant to our interests and probably help a few people here - but at the same time they tend to be posted rather indiscriminately, get bumped a little too often, and generally make a nuisance for many here. I've been seeing an increase in this activity lately and don't want to see this turn into a spam board.
So it seems like a dedicated thread would be a good compromise for something that we want, but only kinda, and only in moderation. Any and all advertising that I know about would be merged with the promos thread.
(Note that actual spam, like those idiots advertising counterfeit shoes, does not count and would still be burninated.)
What do people think? Yea or nay?
Nay for me... I just skip the thread if I don't care about it
i agree with you i dont want to see random spam around tbh, especially from drive-by users. This is all preference in the end, and could result much more work for you. It would be neat to keep it localized, i dont see the nuisance of creating a thread people can keep going back into if they're looking for deals potentially. the key thing for me is drive-by spammers, not sure anyone else cares. keep those closed and we should be good, as long as they dont increase hard to fill up a large portion of the subform.
i still think there needs to be a feedback system in the audio promotion forum, like you can't post one of your tracks until you've appropriately left feedback for 3 others. That would solve this issue because the only reason people are dropping their tracks in this sections is it's way more likely to get a response then in the other area.
umm... brilliant AR, that would totally revolutionize that subforum. i am curious to know if swamper has the tools available to make that happen. all these scenarios depend on how much we care enough to implement rules. there are people like me that would like to be somewhat strict(at least, clear), and there are others that like it really lax.

This will really kill my escort bizz
First craigslist now here
I mean.. occasionally someone will have something legitimate to post...
I mean... sometimes when something decent goes on sale, and a member posts, I'd might want to know
had a good idea, but again i dont think it could be implemented considering the framework of the board.
for the uberthread, there could be a third option over the reply section of the post which would be a variable to substitute in the thread title open for all users. this would override the last deal when submitted with a new one.
:
Deals and Promotions Thread [ Deal: mad4brad's used panties ]
:
where the Deal: would be latest user submitted deal.

Here here. One more thread promoting a new patch/sample/sauce/tabasco/library for *INSERT VST NAME HERE* and I'll dither my own nuts. 4 bit dither too. Not pretty.
I voted no, I don't think we need a huge thread. IMO, we just need a little bit of judgement.
If its a member who's never contributed, then I think the thread should be locked/deleted. The board isn't for people to advertise their wares on if they don't contribute in any other way. I don't care if its nikes or sample banks, this board should be for members, not advertisers. At the most, I think those who wish to advertise should phrase the thread as an open discussion, otherwise why post on a message board??
If its a new product being posted out of genuine interest by a contributing member, then thats fine. Similarly, if its a product which a member on here has developed themselves, then I think it deserves its own thread.
Personally, I think most stuff about good deals (eg, audio midi no brainers, which cryo posts a lot) should probably go in the production-related random thread, since otherwise they clutter the front page. This is a pretty minor issue though IMO and doesn't bother me particularly.

From what I've heard, yeah, I've never actually worked with it but most vB forums I'm a part of have a hell of a time trying to add new features or even update the damned layout.

I do like to spread the word when I see good deals that EDM guys might be interested in, but to say that I post them "a lot" is a gross overstatement. I posted a total of 3 no-brainer alerts last year, and the last one was over a year ago. All were positively received by several TA members. But, after seeing a few snide remarks on other threads from people who don't like them, I pretty much stopped.
Cryo alerted me to a Fab Filter bundle for $100 bucks.
I've been using Twin2 religiously ever since.
No for me, it really is not an issue as far as I'm concerned.
Anyone notice the growth of these remix competitions lately? Those are all about label promotion as you generaly end up signing up to thier alerts as part of the whole process. No shit sherlock someone will say to me.

the problem is all these smalltimers trying to sell their samplepacks or masteringservices, or tutorials. the true deals which cryo posts are great imo and id miss it if it where all in one thread.
