I'm with Dreamhost. Love them, never had any problems.

Look for some coupons online and you'll save a shitload of cash as well.

hows dreamhost with hosting mixes? i wanna upload an archive (nothing too huge, maybe 10gbs or a tiny bit more) for occasional access. it wont get a huge amount of hits for example. it would just be nice to have it backed up as well as for occasional sharing purposes.

Stu is the best host for mixes

I host tons of mixes for TAs, Dreamhost is just fine.

reason i ask is because of this on the website
quote:
Here are some specific examples of things not allowed:

File upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites.

its not the primary objective of the site but i would like to upload an entire archive for backup purposes as well as share some of that occasionally. dont want to be a put in a spot where i sign up and then cant do that.

Ive uploaded a lot of my mixes on mine as well and average about 5 gigs of downloads a month. I think they want to discourage people from setting up warez top sites where they upload tons of warez everyday. Anything in moderation is fine.

*I use Dreamhost btw*

I don't see any real difference between what you're planning to do, and with what I do now.

The only problem you might run into is with hosting radio shows. The only file that was ever pulled from my webspace by the RIAA was a Proton Radio show that a TA member did. I'm guessing that's because radio stations pay a licencing fee in order to be able to broadcast, and this was then being shared without licence. Maybe. They were pretty vague

hmmm. that might be an issue. although i was planning on just keeping the mixes private and only sending out temp links when i want to share something but maybe thats not a good idea either.

I'm sure you could set up some kind of password protection so they can't see your shit, and then just switch it off for short periods of time when you want to share stuff?

It's going to be the same for every hosting company though, I imagine. You might have less problems with a host outside of the US, since the RIAA will have less control over pulling your shit. Maybe I'm wrong though, unfortunately it's not something I have a lot of experience with, sorry.

I posted this in another thread recently, but I've had Dreamhost for about ten years now, and forced Stu to get it years ago when he asked the same question.

You shouldn't have too much to worry about in terms of what you're looking to do. Hosting companies need to put that up simply for legal purposes, but in my experience Dreamhost has generally been pretty "cool" about file hosting as well as pretty much everything else that they do. Hosting mixes and stuff is alright, as long as there's not any blatant copyright issues. Hell, they say that "file upload" is "not allowed", wouldn't that make it pretty much impossible to have a website at all?

Edit: If you're going to upload mixes, make sure they're either your mixes or that you have written permission (this can range from posts on forums or Soundcloud to e-mails and whatnot) from the person. Don't go uploading your whole Sasha & Digweed or Tiesto mix archive, that'll get you in trouble.

yea thats the issue. i think i'll upload the entire archive but just for backup purposes. if i want to share i'll continue to use the likes of megaupload and such. like i said the purpose of the website isnt to share stuff. its actually to replace an artists forum which is being closed down so a couple of us are going to make an unofficial one. defiantly dont want to lose the tracklist archives from there because its not available anywhere else.

also having an issue debating if i should use the artists name as the website address just with a different domain. like .info for example as .com .net .nl etc are all taken. but i was doing some research and fairly sure that can be taken away from me as well since its a trademarked name. now trying to come up with other names but dont like anything so far. :/

oh and thanks for the replies everybody.

Don't just use it as a place to dump files. They'll notice it, especially if you start dumping stuff onto the server right after opening your account without any web content at all. If you're just archiving tracklists then you won't have a problem, but don't go dumping shitloads of MP3s. Dump sites are very illegal and you'll watch yours disappear almost instantly. You're better off setting up a secure FTP server yourself.

You're pretty much SOL in terms of using artist names.

the site would act as a forum first and foremost. im not immediately going to dump everything on there. but after the site is up and running i would like a place to hold all my files. it wouldnt be much. like 10gbs and only for occasional access. only mixes too not albums or single tracks. it can cause a problem yes but itll be private and im not doing it with an intent to lose the artists loads of money. its just no one cares enough to save these mixes and its a shame when they get lost over the years. i just want a backup. if a secure ftp server for that purpose is better then i'll look into that as well. any suggestions? also dreamhost?

oh and i also plan on asking the artists team if it is okay to host the mixes but im not holding my breath that they'll say yes. but it is worth a shot.

Actually would appreciate some help on this lads.

my business website is hosted by NS and it's slow as fuck, to the point I've gotton a couple of complaints and we're only talking about an HTML base with a bit of flash (no downloads at all).

I spoke to NS and they said for another $350 a year they can give me a "virtual private server", basically not just sharing server space, but I reckon they're just fucking me in the first place to get more money off me to defuck me.

Any suggestions? Main thing is I just need to site to load quickly and broswe to the other 8 pages fast. It's all just html and jpgs with a tiny bit of flash and a wordpress backend.

You could store your files out of the web root and access them through your control panel or by ftp. That way no one will even know they're there except the host.
