Mark Farina

His sound doesn't get much love on this board, but he just played one of the best nights of music I have ever heard in my life tonight in Vermont. Absolutely stunning. I was told he's playing Stereo April 16th, so I highly recommend anyone looking for something different than what you will normally hear in an afterhours to check him out. I've seen him a couple times there before, and honestly what he played in a bar with a dancefloor tonight topped them all. I just hope he can do it again in a couple weeks.

check out his WMC House Gangster set on soundcloud. (R-Co, who else the guys has them all).

The music is really good, I love Farina's sound, the only slight complaint is that his mixing can be shoddy at times.

Farina is the man. Always have a fantastic night when he's behind the decks.

Agreed. Although his mixing can be shoddy, it's because he's more about taking risks than being a Digweed-esque perfectionist.

Mark Farina is in my Top 3 favourite DJs, and has been ever since the first time I saw him 7 years ago. I always have an amazing time when he's on the decks.

Yep. I'll take risk over perfection anyday.

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Mar-29-2011 13:08:

he doesn't take huge risks, he just isn't good at mixing.

His mixing was excellent Sunday.

He overcame some significant problems during the night, with a CDJ stopping him on a couple occasions, then the fire alarm going off and ENTIRELY evacuating the club at 1 am. Fire department let everyone back in 10 mins later, and he quickly brought it all back like it never happened. The next hour was actually the highlight of the night.

I just realized he's playing Friday the 15th, not the 16th as I originally posted.

So excited. Coming up from Toronto for this! What else is going on this particular weekend in the same vein? Need some suggestions for the Saturday.

doesnt take huge risks? guy uses more samples/accapellas in his sets than any other non-laptop dj ive listened to. and most of the time it sounds really good....he isnt just doing it to impress. add in the fact he mixes out of tracks every couple of minutes and hes bound to be off on some mixes during the course of a set.

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Apr-04-2011 15:19:

guess what? playing accapellas without a latptop is really easy. Look guys i like Mark Farina a lot here. You guys just sound like Tiesto fans because they say he isn't a bad dj he just makes risky mixes too.

Posted by djlemeir on Apr-06-2011 19:07:

if i can find the farina on kiss radio set with the intro digweed does ill post it here but digweed aka the master of mixing to some you says smething along these lines:

i met mark @ a warehouse party in miami in the mid 90s, as i walked into the booth i saw 3 channel faders up, 3 records playing and mark was looking for another record in his bin.

mark farina is probably the TIGHTEST dj i know / ever heard. + the fact that he doesnt play with a lappy makes it even more interesting.

seriously, unless your playing a top40 club, you shouldnt be using a fuckin laptop, that shit is so boring to listen to. specially with the cheap overused echo effecteds on traktor... ugh

was that last sentence a quote from john too? LOL

Posted by WittyHandle on Apr-07-2011 00:44:

I'm tired of those echo effects too. Joris uses them well, but even he overdoes it.

tonight, Mr. Farina takes us on a musical journey as he kicks off his World Tour in STEREO ... gonna be dope!!!

Posted by trancezilla on Apr-18-2011 00:11:

anyone go? how was the turnout ?

Posted by WittyHandle on Apr-18-2011 03:28:

I couldn't make it, but a bunch of VT peeps went up and gave it glowing reviews. Heard it was just the right amount of people overall, not too packed, but enough to feel like a solid party. Reports vary on end time between 9 and 10. Apparently he was playing to like 15 people at the end and happy to do so.

Now, anyone who actually went want to chime in?

P.s. I was pleased to hear he played the same Fleetwood Mac "Dreams" remix that floored me when he was down here

I was there, but wasn't there for long. McNasty won the facebook contest for a pair of tickets but he worked at noon saturday so we took our disco naps and went for a few hours.

Crowd was awesome for a friday night.. the most diversified I've seen at Stereo. It was a blend of the friday and saturday night crowd, old and young, a little gay, lots of cute girls, some milfs.

Rob Brown, was technically pretty good.. but was playing way too fast and too loud to open for Farina. He must of been at 128 at some points, varying the tempo wayyyy too much. I enjoyed the tracks he played, but it was too pumping for a warm up.

Farina came on around 4:30 with a nice intro track, and the crowd ate it up.. standing ovation, and he delivered big time. Brought the tempo back down to 123-124 and was playing some big room techy basslines with jazzy brass sampling, vocals, he sampled the Beatles... his EQing was spot on, mixing was super tight, nice extended breaks and teaser drops, I was sober and I don't think I ever danced so hard.. the crowd was loving it, smiles all across the board.

I would have loved to stay because I was digging it but we left at 6. I'll make sure to see him again, hopefully he'll be back at Stereo soon enough.

Fabulous night ... Farina's mixing was a little off at some points, but i dont care when you are playing the tunes he plays ... some might have been difficult mixes he was just trying on the fly and it didnt quite work ... but he's been doing this for so long, he fixed up the fuk ups quickly and nicely ...

The beatles Come together remix was so nice to hear on that sound system ... the Fleetwood mac remix had everyone dancing and smiling ...

probably bout 400 or 500 people ... perfect amount ... no lineups to smoke ... very diverse crowd ...

if anyone who was there knows this track he played ..probably between 730 and 830 ... very beautiful melody with this vocal "You know i love you" that kept coming in before the beat dropped ... very upbeat track ... the crowd was going off for this one ... if anybody has any clue, i need this track ...lol

great great night ... cant wait for his next return, which will probably be October if he plays twice a year ...
