While I was living Australia, where the winters are relatively mild and everyone drives everywhere, I barely noticed the change of seasons. It's not as dramatic as that found in other climates, anyhow. Now in Germany and spending a lot more time on foot, I've become acutely aware of, and delighted by the seasonal transitions. Each morning over breakfast, I've watched carefully as a bush next to my kitchen window slowly sprouts flowers I didn't realise it had. It sounds soppy, but spring is a happy time of year, knowing that winter is finally over. I've come to understand why Northern Hemisphere-dwellers so often make mixes centred around the seasons. So essentially, I'm just re-hashing another cliched concept, but it's different because this feeling is a first for me.

Apart from that, my semi-unemployment has left me more time to pursue new music than I've had for many years. I originally had quite a large pool of tracks for this, including a lot of shiny new disco cuts. I battled half-way through, hated it, trashed the whole project. The next day I woke up, refined the concept and the pool, then everything just fell into place, with very little thinking required. The result isn't the funky, vocal-laden thing it was going to be. Instead, it's smooth and quite airy. Rather than my usual safe and boring energy build, I've also tried something a little different with the flow this time. I hope it's enjoyable. As ever, comments greatly appreciated.

The mix title means "spring feeling" or "spring fever". Pretentious, huh?

I still kinda lol every time I read "stub", I just can't help it.

I'm all over this, like German snow on your gaping arsehole.

This is basically the reason why I disagreed with your point a while back that sounding original should be the only real aim of a musician. The concept of a seasonal mix isn't original, and perhaps one rendered through melodic techno isn't that original either. But you're coming at this from the angle of someone with a prog/psy mixing background and this set will probably sound different than something a techno DJ would concoct. So it's not conceptually original, but (hopefully, if you've got any of your own character about your work) it will have its own identity that won't be rehash of other executions of this idea. If an artist has got a strong methodology, distinctive tastes and a constant progression they'll create something with a unique stamp on it, without deliberately aiming to be different. Artists who pursue difference for its own sake are coming at it from the wrong direction, and their work usually lacks the foundations that give a piece any integrity.

Anyway, will give this a listen, obviously.

Nice bird sounds at the start there. I thought there was something new around that I didn't recognise the call for. Took me a minute

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Mar-31-2011 11:30:

Are you... trainspotting the bird calls?

Maybe I am

Nice mix, the tunes were ace. I really enjoyed them. Mixing was strong, and the flow was solid. However, the length... it ended so soon, I honestly wish you would have carried it out a bit longer. That would be the only downfall of this set, because I never got a complete sense of progression. Nice job though.

what is this??!!

Posted by Sushipunk on Apr-03-2011 05:25:

This is a very nice mix, mate. Some of the tracks are downright hypnotic. And I still trip out at the bird sounds

I have to echo Zip's statement though, it just a bit short for my liking. You could have done with another half an hour at least, but I guess finding the right tracks might hinder that.

Great work

Can you provide an alternative download link? MU would work. For some reason China does not like dropbox.

Really, really dug this set. I actually started listening the day you put it up and got half way through but never resumed from there. Popped this on my MP3 player yesterday and listened in full today and it was very enjoyable, especially since the weather was really bad all day and the sun was finally starting to come out while I was listening to this. It was definitely fitting.

I must say I wasn't too fond of the mixing into and out of Groove La Chorde, which was a bit disappointing considering I love that track and really wanted to be excited about the moment it starts making its presence in this mix.

But that's a relatively minor complaint in an otherwise great set. I loved all the other tracks, and the mixing was tight, but like most people felt that it was far too short.

Would love for you to have another go at this sort of mix again in the future. As for my follow-up melodic techno mix, Well I think I just got some inspiration to finally go ahead and record it

I thought this was excellent right up to Libellules (which is from 2009, by the way), and then the flow went a bit wobbly. Although the mix into Libellules was excellent, the track itself didn't quite seem to continue logically from what had gone before. I also agree with Adam that the mixing around Groove La Chorde wasn't too hot either. You did pull it back with the next two tracks, peaking with Machines Can Help which is a fantastic track, but then put the brakes on hard with the next track. I felt that switch from energetic peak to chilled ending was too abrupt.

So yeah... first half great, second half a more mixed bag. I've been wanting to do a techno mix myself, but it's been a case of finding something interesting to do with it, because I don't like just playing a genre set if other people on TA are doing a good job of it already.

paulina, i can't sit here.

anyhow, very nice mix. had this on my harddrive and skimmed it through it a couple of times but the weather was nice to day and felt perfect to play this. went down quite nice, tunes was good and mixing was good.

Posted by yonny on Apr-06-2011 17:55:

nice mix!! Smooth mixing and nice track selection... THo i feel the end was a bit to plain, you should have let loose of your magic

Posted by Zyklon_Jay on Apr-06-2011 18:09:

looks to be something i would enjoy.

*takes off shirt*

Posted by enydo on Apr-06-2011 23:52:

Yeah, definitely melodic. Was a nice mix, smooth and thumpy. The end did lose me a bit though.
Solid overall.

Mixing was off at a few places, but your track selection was good. Overall i think that your programming skills are a lot better than i remember (albeit you usually play stuff i might not love). The mixing wasn't horrible at all, but towards the end of the set things got a bit disjointed and jumpy. Not enough to flop though because most of these tunes still speak for themselves.
