Lira's April's Fools' Thread: Because you sort of can't spell April without Lira.

+40 replies and no one bothered to look what day it was?

As if I'd ever value anything more than tolerance and freedom! I know better than judge a system of ideas because of a nutter who pulls facts out of his own arse

After seeing the response from secular and religious folks in Japan, I decided to take a more responsible stance, fight religious bigotry and denounce superstitious backwardness. Why?

Because I've seen enough people suffer: first the earthquake hit, then a tsunami (why do you guys keep saying "soo-na-mee" anyway?), then a harsh winter in the last weeks of March (!) and then a nuclear meltdown. The moment I get back in Brazil, a religious friend tells me the Japanese had it coming because they refuse to worship God, and adore robots and schoolgirls instead.... because her pastor said so. Really!? Look at this kid writing a letter to her mother (and she doesn't even know how to mail it!) asking her if she's alive...

She lost her family and "[she] deserved it because she doesn't fear God"!? Enough is enough, it's about time I dropped my happy-go-lucky tolerant attitude and become an all-around cunt

I now have to pick up my fiancée at the airport, more on this outburst later today... hardline atheists of this board, rejoice for I have joined you!

While I understand the outrage, and am similarly offended, I would suggest to you that the position of this "pastor" is in no way consistant with mainstream Christianity.

Im sure most people feel the same & you don't have to be a hardline atheist to agree either. Don't drive crazy or anything Lira. Just relax & take it easy.

I think its a bit silly blaming an ideological group instead of the individuals in the groups... There is no 'christianity', there's a million people who all believe different things about one vaguely similar idea... 'religion' rarely tells people to do things, people want to do things, then use religion as justification after the fact:

basically, some (read: Most) people are fucktards, if they didn't have religion to tell them what to do they would turn elsewhere... nationalism, folk-science, or something totally new-- followers will be followers no matter the 'intended' meaning of the doctrine...

Keep calm and carry on

I can never decide whether I want to be a cunt about atheism or not.

I don't think you have it in you, Lira.

Lira is a Jedi. He is just now realizing the need to unsheathe his lightsaber.

It took me a while to come to this decision, and the destruction I witnessed forced me to take a position regarding religion in the world. As a matter of fact, on my flight back I read Sam Harris' latest book (Moral Landscape), and the things he said really convinced me that I may have been too lenient up until now.

Where was God when the roof collapsed on top of a 6 year old child that died instantly? Why are his advocates systematically raping children all around the world while the corpses of hundreds of other kids were floating among the debris after the tsunami? Should I really just stand and watch people like this pastor condemn these poor lives that were cut short? What is it if not mainstream Christianity?

Religion poisons everything, and this is just a sample of how cruelty and fear can be used to manipulate the masses. I can't sit idly and let it happen, I had to do something about it. Today I make my first commitment against religion and its dirty ideological tentacles.

Oh? What is it you're going to do about it?

I'm going to write books showing the fallacies religious people make, like Dawkins and friends. And I'm going to go around telling everyone they're wrong. And I'm going to offer porn to kids that refuse to go to church and be indoctrinated by religion.

Or maybe I'll just watch pictures of naked bottoms to show my scorn for anti-masturbatory laws. I haven't decided yet.

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Apr-01-2011 15:18:

Of the things that shouldn't be tolerated any longer, clothed bottoms should be at the top of your list.

I understand the frustration and if lashing out at people and belief systems makes you feel better then please fill your boots. That said, I have to point out that mainstream Christianity does not believe God punishes people who do not believe, as this "pastor" seems to. I would also contend that god's advocates are not "systematically raping children all around the world"... have priests raped children; yes; however, this is not a systemic thing. If you have evidence that there is a disproportionate number of pedophiles in the clergy as opposed to other occupations that bring people in contact with children then please produce it; until then one cannot reasonably argue god's advocates systematically rape children then one could argue public education systematically rapes children. Finally, I would suggest to you that there are far more people moved to help the suffering influenced by their faith then there are people who are condeming them.

I understand your anger and hope you work through it but allowing yourself to be driven by it is rather beneith you, no?

BTW, as to the where was god question... the standard answer would be; with the suffering.

Religion's got a few things down. Rosary beads are phenomenal for anal.

I think you're on a good way, Lira. Finally you abandon that shitty tolerance and objectivity. Letting emotions cloud your thinking is great and the first step towards listening to Eurodance.

It's Brazil dude. You guys have some pretty fucking nutty pastors. Like the guy who forbade his congregation from using USB ports because they were marked with the symbol of Satan.

The USA still beats you though on the religious nut meter.

You know, it kind of looks like a guy squatting and taking a big dump if you look at it sideways.
