Procreation

Basic question, why are people compelled to procreate? The world is already over-populated and we are unable to get resources to those who need them. A drastic population reduction would, in my opinion, help out humanity in so many ways. I am not talking about wiping anyone out, or sterilizing the stupid, or anything like that.
My solution is adoption. All of the people that want a child, should just adopt instead of having one of their own. It would be great for the child who is parent-less and it would decrease the population. So, why don't more people do it?
Also, guys. If you don't want kids get a vasectomy and stop risking having a child every time a condom rips. They can surgically take the sperm out and artificially inseminate, post-vasectomy (if it is done properly) there is no reason to have babies "naturally" anymore.

People aren't compelled to procreate so much as it is instinctual. It's human nature to want to pass on one's gene pool, just like all animals instinctually mate to continue their "line." Yeah, sure you can choose to not do so, but to ask why more people don't is simple animal nature.

This reminds me of the movie "Rampage" where a guy becomes so disconnected from reality buys a bunch of armor, automatic weapons, bombs, and goes through his small town shooting it up. He also bombs the police department, robs a bank, and kills his best friend. His agenda was to reduce the amount of people on Earth for the same reason this thread mentions. With lots of "youtube" type cut-ins lots of references to over population.

this. Its an instinct, and if you're going to say that we should overcome our instinct, you might as well just make yourself a new religion. We're animals, we wanna have children, we want out children with our own dna-- trying to overcome instinct and be aim for an ideal has always led to horrendous acts (religion as I said above is entirely founded on trying to be 'better than our instincts')

death/war etc is the only way that the overpopulation will be 'solved', although the overpopulation we're experiencing now was essentially caused by what happens AFTER wars, and economic downturns etc, so that's not really a long-term solution anyway

also, if you check statistics etc, every first world country's population is plumetting, developing countries have drastically increasing populations which will turn into/already are big problems, but its a false generalisation to say everywhere is overpopulated. Australia (for example) is empty

Well, I said nothing about intelligence. Just education.

With extended education people put off having kids longer, and also generally pursue careers that take a while to advance. And they make a bunch of other plans and acquire lots of other interests and aspirations that get in the way of having a big family, so when they finally get around to having kids they end up with just one or two.

yeah but 'fittest' was never about intelligence either, its about what the society considers most valuable, which undoubtedly is looks and money: Since both those categories usually don't have (many) kids both of those categories slowly dwindle down, while societies LEAST fit members usually have 10 kids still

In aus they started a 'baby bonus', can't remember how much, but a few thousand I belive, to try get production going: Result- huge amounts of junkies start popping out kids for the cash...

One of the more depressing things I've seen which stuck with me is a woman who would have been at least 8 months preggers KOd on (pretty sure) heroin with her standup gent chroming next to her... good stuff

how old are you? have you had any kids before this decision?

27 and nope. After working with orphans I made up my mind that if I ever really want a child I will take one that needs someone, not make another.

See that's not a bad thing. I still want my own children though, since I don't see the point of life beyond my 30s without kids.
