Advice On My First Gig

I just got a call from a friend asking If I can do a set at a fundraiser. He told me all the djs there mixin hip hop/RnB, but he said he needs variation 'dance music.' I'm afraid I'd have the problem if I play trance.......I need your advice! What other dance music should I play?

Well if the people are into Hip Hop then they have interest in cheese music....

So just dig up some Milk Inc, Lasgo, Aurora, Ian Van Dahl and Dee Dee Tracks and you should be fine.

try to keep it kinda smooth and nothing to violent

i'd throw some breaks in there, as it's a closer style to hiphop then most dance music. but yea, cheeze, vocals are a definite plus. it gives them something to follow as most hiphop headz dun understand the way trance is structured and wut is so beautiful about the melodies. dun try to send your audience to the next emotional/spiritual level w/ epic trance, just let them groove to the music...some house, funky breaks, that type of stuff.

g'luck on ur gig!

i say house. Cheese will make them hate you, because Cheese is what they hate! house music is funky, and soulful. trance would just piss them off.

I personally would just play all my weird ass stuff. Stuff that you can't really categorise. But if it is your first gig you really should be playing stuff you know very well!

if you're going the house way, make sure you keep it to more commercial tracks. it's gonna be much easier for them to dance this way. make sure you add something a bit harder than house (sylver, lasgo and such) at the end...

Look at it this way. What do you think the reactions on Methodman's, Dr Dre's or 2 Pac's face would be if they were at the party you dropped Lasgo, or Ian van Dahl. Definately drop house and if you dont know waht tunes, Id seriously check out Carl Cox. That man is sick.
If all else fails, anything with a latin beat would be perfect. Sorry i couldnt hook ya up with any songs though.

Well, why don't you just ask your friend that asked you to do it in the first place. Wouldn't he know the best? Make a demo if you don't already have one of the music YOU want to play and then see if he likes it and/or if that is what he had in mind! I really enjoy going to DnB clubs sometimes, but that doesn't mean that I'll stop loving trance as much as I do! It would be great if I went to a DnB party and then one dj was trance.

Yeah, just call up your friend and ask him what kind of music he'd like you to play, ask him for some examples of tracks he'd like you to play and you'll get an idea. Anyhow, if he's a friend of yours and he knows you spin trance then maybe he asked you to dj cause he wants trance.

King

to situations like this I can only suggest you refrain from following cliches or anything stereotypical to try to please the crowd

First before going any further , be true to yourself and play YOUR music , don't let anyone make you change your mind, but above ALL stay FLEXIBLE in your style cause you do have to adapt somewhat. ( I know it sounds contradictal )

Second and most important make the music ACCESIBLE. Don't play anything ( or at least keep that to a smaller portion ) the people can't "relate" to in terms of understanding the music and feeling groovy to dance along, hence the reason why I suggest you spin more of a slower but moving set made of decent techno house and some trance ( but not that up in your face kind )

If you think cheesy will please the crowd I say no! Why ? Cause it's cheese and to people who don't know trance , well either they call it the worst crap or some dancable stuff. No need to play cheese cause they won't even know what it is... but you might still want to put up some stuff they've heard if you want to pierce in with like "iio - rapture".

Don't get wild on them and think of what you are playing as an outsider... would you like what is being played if you did not know any form of electronic music?

IMHO I think you should play whatever you like, play what you do best in. If you like trance, then play a trance set.
I think it is important to share your music with people, even if they aren't familiar with the genre.
Who knows, you might win some fans over.... or convert some.
Good luck.
