System J's "TAs Share Their Classics" - Part II

Once a month I invite a TA to make a mix, no more than 80 minutes in length, of their personal favourite tracks in any genre. The records that influenced them, the records they've always wanted to play but perhaps never been able to fit into a set. The emphasis is on creating a mixtape-type set, with less focus on technical DJing ability and more focus on the tracks.

If you agree to "share your classics," please post your compilation before the 15th day of the month.

If you're interested in sharing your Classics, redoing a Classics Mix, or in doing a part II to a prior Classics Mix, please send me a message or better yet, post in this thread.

The person who has been invited to do the mix for the month will post his own mix (tracklist) and if the download link to the mix changes, he will be responsible for updating his or her original post with a current download link.

This is fun. I very much enjoy listening to these sets.

Downloading.

Tracks from 2010 and 2011 though? "Classics" theme here, Ian. Not just "tracks you love"

Mmmm, I love oxymorons

In the case of this theme, it's never been about the "mixing", just about the actual "classic" tracks. Like a mix-tape. I know you're old enough to remember cassettes Mixing the tracks together, here, was only ever about bonus points, really.

I'll most certainly listen to this mix, there are a lot of great tunes in there that I recognise (and some that I don't, of course).

Will let you know (and sorry if I sound harsh).

when have we ever had this convo? all i ever said about cloudwalking was in reference to this interview in which pulser says:

quote:
which remix of Cloudwalking do you think is the best?
The best version is completely new and it sent to me quite recently. I don't know who produced it but i'll try to find out when i get home. that remix is exactly how I wanted Cloudwalking to sound from the beginning. Uplifting, melodic & euphoric.

I love the Beatpusher remix
Yeah, it's superb and incredibly well produced, but it doesn't feel like what i think Cloudwalking means to me.

i think the beatpusher remix is the best one. beat pusher added so much into something that was a typical epic trancer with a repeated hook. bear in mind i like the original or astral mix, whichever mix tijs played on magik 6.

anyhoo, downloaded and having a listen. but i have to agree with stu, playing tracks from 2010 & 2011 in a personal classics mix?. that is like when the asot kids said atrc was classic after two years of it's release.

Here goes. I hope you all enjoy this, it's not perfect by any means, infact there's 2 or 3 moments where I thought I should re-record but for those who know me, who've heard me play live over the years, they know to expect such things, so in many ways this is a true reflection of myself, a fan who tries to mix for enjoyment rather than someone who's serious about putting out a perfect sounding mix. I know nothing about mixing in key, phasing or anything, I'm pretty much tonedeaf

Stardust - The Music Sounds Better With You [Virgin] 1998

This was 'the' feelgood tune for myself & my friends back when it came out. French house was pretty much my favourite, it was a tad commercial often but it worked and was my favourite of the house tracks of that era.

Bucketheads - The Bomb [Positiva] - 1995

This is a bit more interesting. When I first heard it, it irritated the hell out of me but then it grew on me and I began to appreciate what it did and what it was.

Strike - U Sure Do [Fresh] - 1994

I just love this track to this day. It's everything that I enjoyed about eurodance, simple, fun and bouncy.

The Original - I Luv U Baby [Ore Music] - 1994

You couldn't go anywhere without hearing this track, it was on every compilation from specialist dance ones to the 'Now that's what I call Music' series and again it encompasses simple techniques, there's not a whole lot going on but it's clean and enjoyable.

Anticappella - 2/231 [PWL Continental] - 1991

Back in my very early days, when I was getting away from listening to what my parents exposed me to (50s, 60s, 70s, 80s/pop music) I was loaned a cassette from my friend who had got it from his older brother. This was on that compilation and stuck out with me as being my favourite back then. About 5 years later I found the same compilation on CD & was quick to snap it up.

Alex Party - Don't Give Me Your Life [Systematic] - 1994

When Eurodance ruled the world (And meat187 was having his pubic awakening, alongside Karim) this was massive. It's cheese, but it's good cheese as was typical of euro.

Rui Da Silva - Touch Me [Dance Pool] - 2000

I'd heard this track from DJs like Tong, Rampling etc on radio1 and obviously it was big in the charts too and I loved it, but it came into an element of it's own in 2001 when I went on my first holiday abroad. I was sat in a bar with my brother on the beach which was playing bog-standard balearic house and this came on. Already knowing it I was excited but as the sun went down over the ocean, orange hues shone and I got chills that I remember to this day. Beautiful tune.

Tall Paul vs INXS - Precious Heart [Duty Free Recordings] - 2001

Back in these days, I was a little bit dismissive of alternative music & really sceptical when I heard of this tune that it would be anything other than shit. How wrong I was. I chose this because even to this day when it breaks down, the hairs on my arms stand up on end.

Riva - Stringer [FFRR] - 2001

Forget the horrid vocal version, this is pure bliss as an instrumental. Those who've participated in ukta/ourboard/ta radio over the years have played and heard it lots, and with good reason.

Pulser - Cloudwalking (Beatpusher Remix) [ATCR] -2003

In an era where nowadays new remixes are generally terrible, we look back just 8 years to when a lot of tracks were getting new treatments. I liked the Astral mix and those who know Tijs old magik series will have heard that aplenty but it sounds a bit dated now. Beatpusher took this track and got something new out of it. I've had countless arguments with montana because he tells me that it wasn't meant to be played in this context but I don't care, it works for my ears & as much as I respect his taste & him as a person, I have to go with my gut feeling to be the person I am, therefore it's in, and it's in like this.

Nalin & Kane - Open Your Eyes (Reworked Club Mix) [Infusion] -1999

Essential mix, Paul Oakenfold, live from Space in Ibiza. July 25th 1999. Remember that mix, remember that day. This tune is so good that he played it twice (albeit different versions) To this day, I cane the fuck out of this. It's just everything that I love about trance music.

Chakra - Opacity [Digital Oracle] - 2005

I first heard this from John 00 Fleming I believe & I don't know if it ever got a full release as a single, but it was on a compilation I picked up called Revelations back in 2005. It's blissful progressive trance and has a plethora of emotion and feeling in it. I love it

The Prodigy - Your Love [XL Recordings] - 1991

This isn't just a trance mix although I could've stuck with that style all day & gone through it, so I wanted to bring back some more of my earlier youth with my favourite track from the Prodigy's first album. I grew up on many many mixtapes from live events, starting when this was new material and later in the 90s when it was termed as Oldskool, and heard it a lot of times. The piano break later on is beautiful but as I wanted to play a lot more, I mixed out then.

DJ Edge - Compounded [Edge Records] - 1992

Another big tune with the hardcore DJs. I heard it many many times in the oldskool sets and on occasion heard Sy scratch the hell out of it in a manner than I don't think many others can.

Krome & Time - This sound is for the underground [Suburban Base Records] - 1992

This one was a later bloomer as far as I'm concerned. It was on all of the compilations, mixes and so forth but I paid so much attention to other tracks that I really missed out on this, so it seems right to play it amongst other tracks of it's ilk.

Cassius - I <3 U So (Skream's Made Zdar Feel Like He Was 20 Again Remix) [Ed Banger Records] - 2011

And now we come to the present. The modern day. People are doing a lot of things like sampling old sounds and this is one such occasion. The Amens aren't perfectly done, they're simple but over a period of nigh on 20 years, I've gone full circle and I'm now able to mix old and new together. Skream's dubstep can be a bit wobbly & annoying but I like most of this other stuff.

Skream - The Epic Last Song [Tempa] - 2010

More newness from Skream. I enjoy mixing this into the previous track and it's a feelgood simple sound that would've been huge back in the day but for the same reasons I've mentioned in the last track, may not be to some peoples taste, but this is my mix, not theirs Those on my last.fm will see I've played a lot of this, so it's only fair that it be considered here. I know it's not a 'classic' per se but whilst it's fresh, a lot of the old stuff I've played still sounds fresh to my simple ears.

Slipmatt - Breaking Free [Awesome Records] - 1994

Hardcore/Jungle/Breakbeat type tune from the era when boundaries were a lot less clear than they became with the advent of 4beat hardcore and the way they split off & went their own ways. Atmospheric, although not as much as stuff on good looking & stuff was, as someone who grew up more on the hardcore fence, this is a good example of that.

Renegade - Terrorist [Moving Shadow] - 1994

Before the aforementioned hardcore breakoff, I was into Jungle as much as the hardcore stuff and this is one of the biggest ever tunes of that. Even today I love hearing the simple intro. You may also hear a bit of Omni Trio - Renegade Snares. It wouldn't be one of my mixes without a mistake so I'm admitting to that one at least

Adam F - Circles [Positiva] - 1997

Commercially this was one of the first big tracks/artist albums that made a lot of sales and Circles was the most recognisable track off it. It's one that people who maybe don't know a lot of Jungle recognise.

Q Project - Champion Sound (Alliance Mix) [Legend Records UK] - 1993

The first ever mixtape a friend lent me was back in 1993 & from Ratty. This track was on it & for obvious reasons, it jumped out to me and grabbed me by my pre-pubescent balls and yanked me into adulthood. Or the emergency room, my memory isn't what it used to be...

High Contrast - The persistence of memory [Hospital] - 2004

...And if only I had it. A track from the welsh wizards first album that I enjoy. A bit messy going into and out of it but it's there and if I tried to redo the mix, I'd probably arse up somewhere else if I got this bit right.

Klute - Hell Hath No Fury [Commercial Suicide] - 2005

And to the finale. An absolutely epic, beautiful, wonderful, serene, orgasmic piece of piano & amen drum & bass. Bringing me into what I'm playing these days now, it's just blissful and beautiful. And did I mention it's beautiful? Probably.

Ian, I like this mix. The transitions can be a bit jarring (obviously due to the genre changes, so I don't mind much), but I really like the song selection.

I went to d/l Bas's mix and it's not working, btw. Any chance of a re-up? I saw "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at the end and that sold me.

I would definitely have it somewhere, but I need to know the file name? I have A LOT of Bas' mixes, lol.

The only one from around that time is called "bas_-_my_definition"

Would that be it?

Yes, Sushi, Bas - My Definition is the Classics set for March 2010.

I'm still missing the set that Enydo put together for June 2010. Maybe I should go through the original thread again to see if it was ever re-upped.

that carly simon song is amazing

Posted by Lews on May-10-2011 02:35:

Here it is folks: the May Mix. It's a little early, but it's finished so what the hell.

1. Lolo (Intro) - Dr. Dre [ Aftermath Entertainment 1999]
Ah, my classics mix. Where to start? So much music, yet so little genre variety. I'm known for my love of prog and trance and this mix is no exception. Little known fact, I'm also a big fan of rap and hip-hop, so I tried to throw in a few tracks. The last year or so I've been actually listening to more varied music, but since this is supposed to be a classics mix I decided to keep it to some of the most influential songs for me, as well as some just absolute favorites. Hopefully some of you will still give it a listen, even though it's not the most varied; I'm still pretty happy with it showing my biggest influences and favorite songs.

This mix definitely could have been two-parts or several hours long, and I had a damn hard time getting it down this short. My first draft (which was already only 1/5 of the songs I wanted), was about 120 minutes, but after cutting out four songs and re-doing a transition I made these 16 fit. Oh, I decided to start off with the intro to 2001 because I'm a big fan of Dre's past work and I'm a huge fan of Star Wars.

2. Guerilla Radio - Rage Against The Machine [Epic 1999]
I bought my first CD, The Battle For Los Angeles, in 2002 (yes, I'm young). I had gotten the game Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and it introduced me to music besides the stuff my parents listened to and the stuff they thought I might like. My father said no to getting the Naughty By Nature album, but apparently this was alright. Funnily enough I actually can't remember the last time I listened to anything like this, but since this was the song responsible for my first purchase, I had to include it.

3. The Maestro - Beastie Boys [Capitol Records/Grand Royal 1992]
Once I discovered some music I actually liked, I started listening to the radio. The station I listened to the most was a combination of rock, rap, and metal, but every night they would play old school classic rap and I eventually got introduced to the Beastie Boys. I've always loved them and their mixture of bravado and ridiculousness with lines like, "How can he be so skinny and live so phat?"

4. Hate It Or Love It - The Game feat. 50 Cent [Aftermath Entertainment 2005]
Maybe it's because I live in America, maybe it's because I'm a white upper-middle class male, but I've always had a thing for rap (as you can see by the few non-electronic songs here). This song always surprised me since it's a song with 50 Cent that I just can't help but like. Also, I needed to represent the occasional mainstream rap I listen to, but Jack already played 99 Problems and I didn't want to play something already played

5. Daydreamin' - Lupe Fiasco feat. Jill Scott [Atlantic 2006]
It's a fucking rap song about robots. Add that with Jill Scott's great voice and social commentary about the nature of the rap industry and you've got me hooked. Big fan of Lupe, but this is definitely my favorite of his.

6. Invisible Man In A Fluorescent Suit - Shpongle [Twisted Records 2009]
Yeah, Stu, it's from 2009. But considering that's only 7 years after the first album I bought, I'm going to excuse myself This song was extremely influential in getting me to start trying to get more into music beyond the prog and trance I normally listen to. This got me into the rest of Shpongle's discography as well as getting me to try out Autechre and a few other stuff outside my normal comfort zone. I've been too busy the last few months to go crate digging, but looking forward to looking deeper into music once summer hits. Anyways, re: this song, I don't think I need to explain why I think it's so great.

7. Solina - Evolution [Fluid Recordings/Nettwerk America 1999/2002]
One of the most beautiful prog tracks of all time, imo, and from one extremely prolific duo. Listening to Bedrock by John Digweed I loved Baba, but when this song came in I was in love. The ascending and descending melody is just beautiful. Great bassline, percussion, vocal pads, etc, too.

8. Stage One (Pariah's Shadow Lounging Mix) - Space Manoeuvres [Hooj Choons 1999]
John Graham has put out a lot of great stuff in his days, but Stage One gets my (and many other people's) vote for number one and Naughty G and Rowan Blades' remix is just perfect. I suck at describing music, but this song would have many positive adjectives involved in its description. If I ever am rich enough to go into outer space I want this song playing as I take off.

9. I Have Put Out The Light - James Holden [Silver Planet Recordings 2002]
While I tried to avoid songs other people had played already, this song was going to get played no matter what. If I could choose only one song to listen to, this would probably be it. That sad little melody in the intro, the vocals, the bass, the ethereal atmosphere, the trumpets, the drums.. This song's only fault is that it's only 8:50 instead of 15:00+. One of the first EDM albums I got was Digweed's recently released MMII and this was definitely the highlight of the mix for me. It was responsible for me looking more into Digweed, James Holden, and prog in general. Probably my idea of a perfect song.

10. Easter Island (Cygnus X Mix) - Art Of Trance [Platipus 1999]
Yes, of course Platipus was going to get in here. After listening to a bunch of Digweed and Oakenfold mix CDs, I discovered the awesome power of the internet for downloading music that I couldn't get. Not sure what turned me towards Tiesto, but I ended up downloading all the Forbidden Paradise and Magik mixes. Fell in love with this song and eventually the rest of Simon Berry's discography, not to mention almost everything Platipus has released (leading to spending far too much money attempting to collect them all).

11. Lithium (Oliver Lieb Remix) - Paragliders [Phoolish Records/Platipus 2000]
On one of the Platipus volumes I discovered this little song from one of Oliver Lieb's many aliases. If someone asked for an example of a trance song, this is probably what I would play for them as to me this epitomizes trance. Perfection.

12. Twilo Thunder (Stoked Up Mix) - Breeder [Rythm Syndicate 1999]
Oh Breeder, how I love your basslines. Throw in an addicting vocal stab and one of the best melodies I've ever heard, make a song over 10 minutes long, and I think I'm in love. Breeder have made many great songs, but this was both the first one I heard and my favorite. That melody just combined with the bassline just makes me want to dance.

13. Words (For Love) - Paul Van Dyk [MFS 1996]
After listening to several Oakenfold and Digweed albums, I needed a place to start to dig. Both Tranceport and GU:006 Sydney had this great song called Words (For Love) by an artist named Paul Van Dyk, so I said fuck it and bought Seven Ways as my first EDM artist album. Paul has fallen a long fucking way from there, but Seven Ways is filled with a bunch of amazing trance and is one of the finest trance artist albums there is.

14. Cowgirl (Bedrock Mix) - Underworld [Junior Boy's Own 2000]
Of course Bedrock was going to make it in here somewhere. One of my favorite groups, they're responsible for some of the best progressive tunes and remixes there are and this is one of my favorites, from another fantastic group.

15. Bar None - Max Graham [Hope Recordings 2001]
Before Max Graham decided to make the same copy cutter shit 98.7% of trance producers make these days, he actually produced some fantastic progressive-trance tracks on Hope Recordings. This used to be a big Okie favorite and is still one of mine.

16. Tears In Rain - Vangelis [EastWest 1994]
To bookend the Sci Fi sounds of this mix comes Vangelis in one of his best songs and another Okie favorite. Vangelis has made some fantastic stuff and the Blade Runner sound track is no exception. Simply beautiful stuff.

I had a lot of fun mixing this. Thanks for listening
