8-year old pepper sprayed by police

http://www.examiner.com/us-headline...by-police-video

Is this okay? If not, what should rather have been done?

Posted by Jackson on Apr-17-2011 19:20:

Pepperspray is inhumane to use on an 8 year-old....should of dropkicked the fcuker.

Posted by Lira on Apr-17-2011 19:26:

If I ever have kids, I'm going to pepper spray them and add Worcester sauce.

Kinda like Tex-Mex flavoured children?

I am very upset , they sprayed an 8 year old pepper. I'm sure they will tell, they did it cause it was about to expire, but that's no excuse to be spraying such old pepper!

Posted by Jackson on Apr-17-2011 20:34:

I don't understand how 2 policemen - trained in restraint techniques would feel the need to use pepperspray. Especially 2 shots of it. Unless they thought that physical contact with the child might count as molestation....

that kid is a demon child.

should have used garlic spray

The kid and mom both deserve to be pepper-sprayed, right out of that school. He belongs in juvenile detention or a psyche ward.

Posted by Znack on Apr-17-2011 22:25:

Sure. He threatened the police and other classmates with a sharpened piece of wood, so he should be stopped. The alternative was to use physical violence, which would have put both officers and the kid in danger of serious injury.

The kid has even stated in a talk show later that he "was basically asking for it". It is only the mother, who should have raised him better who is hysterical about it.

Posted by aquila on Apr-17-2011 22:28:

the little shit was asking for it imho

I'm sure I don't know the whole story, but judging by that little blurb sounds like it was the right call.

Posted by RandomGirl on Apr-17-2011 23:18:

Threatening to kill people while wielding a weapon is grounds to pepper spray him. Like someone mentioned, the kid needed to be controlled, and physically trying to do so would have resulted in possible serious injury to both himself and the police officers. Pepper spray was totally called for and that kid needs to not only be taken out of his home, but he also needs some serious counseling.

The mom is making him into a victim when he was wanting to kill people, she's enabling his behavior. He said he hates school because it takes him away from his mom, he's a demon child because of how his mother has raised him and he will probably end up in jail before he's out of high school.
The police would have caused more damage trying to restrain him than just shooting some pepper spray at him. I'm sure that stuff is painful but a quick blast won't cause any sort of permanent damage. I'm not sure what I would do if a kid went beserk on me like that. The protocol is to get everyone out of harms way and close them in the room, you aren't allowed to lock them in but you can hold the door shut until they calm the fuck down. They'll eventually tire out while the parents come to get them. There was no need to call the cops if the mom was really on the way, which is why I think that perhaps she wasn't really coming at the time, or she hadn't come quickly in the past 2 instances when he pulled the same shit.

When kids fight I have this sort of barking yell voice that scares the shit out of them and gets them to stop immediately just to look around for Satan. in the confusion I step between them and they are usually about to cry at this point so I just have to act like I am mad at them even though I am just on damage control at that point. btw, good teachers won't let it get to that point in elementary school. The teacher has not set up the proper classroom environment if other kids are not peer pressuring the child to act appropriately. (long winded responses sorry!)

Posted by Lews on Apr-18-2011 01:04:

Yeah, definitely the teacher's fault this kid pulled out a stake and tried to start killing people

Posted by DJ Itchy Tits on Apr-18-2011 01:13:

probably deserved it. there are some mean kids out there. i used to know a little black kid called drew. he used to say 'stupid ficken biatch. im gonna kick your ass motherfocker. ' he was like 4 and was drinking pruno.
true story.

reminded me of a great story from high school:
one day i was getting into my math class junior year. two seniors got into a fist fight in the hallway as classes were starting, right outside of the room at the other end of the hall from my class. this one dweebish teacher i had (who later turned out to be a potential child-molester) ran out of his classroom and instead of trying to break up the fight he just belted out "EMERGENCYYYY. EMERRGENCCYYY" and then ran back into his class. My 70 year old professor from germany ran down to the end of the hall, grabbed one kid by his neck and held him up to the wall while pushing the other kid out of the way with free hand. was fucking glorious

Reminds me of a trick I used with customers who were acting like idiots, panicking and causing a scene when what they really needed to do was shut the fuck up and answer the questions I was asking so I could fill their order. I'd wait until their back was turned or walk out of their view and clap my hands as loud as I could. It basically forced them to stop thinking 1,000,000 miles an hour along the lines of bullshit continually perturbing them and pulled them into the moment, where they could actually focus on their problem.

That's how I scold my cats when they claw the furniture.

Posted by Lews on Apr-18-2011 01:39:

Same. Or I get a squirt bottle and chase them around the house screaming, "Bad kitty!" and shooting them.

Posted by EddieZilker on Apr-18-2011 01:42:

We have a cat who is absolutely terrified of compressed air-cans, so if that's handy, I like to use it. But the water-bottle works, too.

yeah, actually it is. The classroom is the teacher's domain, they set the atmosphere and it has to accomodate every single child and their abnormalities. It is not uncommon at all to have at least a third of the students coming into most classrooms with severe emotional baggage. In my first grade classroom last semester over half of the students had a father in jail and those kids simply did not know how to deal with anger, how could they? They have no example at home which teaches them positive anger management. It is the responsibility of the teacher to make the child feel safe and any instance where one child threatens another is the teachers fault. There are a lot of great methods to prevent this sort of behavior, and when every single method seems to fail, you have to realize that you are dealing with an 8 year old not a hardened criminal so figure out what needs to be changed so that the classroom is a safe environment which encourages positive growth. Kids can be fucking maniacs at times but they are in essence very malleable and they feed off of the environment that they are in.
