tech house

can anyone recommend some tech house please. it's a tough subgenre for me to identify.

It's difficult cause there is convergence between modern prog house and tech house. To me, this is a tech house example.

I've actually used a similar term to describe some songs to an EDM-fan friend of mine... "oh that song, it sounds a little too "Beatport top 10 house" for my tastes!"

i associate tech house more with djing than actual production (i recognize the genre of course). You can mix techno and house together in a certain way to achieve this sound. It is basically used most by people who don't know exactly what they are playing or jump around a lot. The music rarely speaks for itself, but that is ok, used properly it is just there to create a dance friendly environment and nothing more.

i am going to do some shameless self promotion:

1st of all in the year i've been playing with it i've known that tech house is as descriptive as calling all the edm "techno or house" like most people say.

Generally tech house is a bit slower than the common house (125-126bpm) and more minimalistic, emphasis in deep bass, percussion, dry snares... but again you can love the style of a particular tech house set and hate another tech house set because it's completely different.

As for the beatport house, there is a topic tilting from time to time this weeks here, basically beatport house sums up into Toolroom records, melodic as progressive house but with some tech house elements.

If you like this style i made a set recently (and here comes the self promotion) of what i consider the hype of the moment around this, there are no toolrom records tracks here but is a melodic house set

tech house means techno house. given that there any number of styles of techno and any number of styles of house and any number of tempos that either can be (125-126, are you kidding me?) this makes it quite impossible to define the way you have.

there are at least as many shades of tech house as there are techno and house alike.

i posted some of the prototypical tech house that came out of chicago and detroit because it's what I like and the stuff often gets overlooked in today's beatport era. there is more progressive and tribal house influenced stuff later in the 90s like david alvarado, from when that was the dominant sound of clubs, and of course then there was a period of minimal glitchy tech house starting in the late 90s with tracks like 'beau mot plage' by isolee that were quickly termed 'microhouse', which exploded and were widely popularized by richie hawtin, magda, and everyone and their grandmother. then we got all this latin influenced ethnic 'tech house'. then deep house became the primary substrate and it got its share of assraping, and now it's this bullshit 'slow disco' edit nonsense that has all the ex microhouse k-heads jizzing in their pants while they layer their richie hawtin sample packs on top of marvin gaye loops, trying fit circular classics through their square holes. and all the while there exist these 'trendy' types of tech house, there are other people trying to cash in on their success. trance producers becoming prog house producers who incorporate microhouse elements into their tracks in a desperate grasp for relevance, etc. and i barely mentioned any of the variations. you've got belgian new beat influenced tech house, dubstepno tech house, basic channel dub tech house, acid tech house, etc etc etc

the point is there are always new types of 'tech house' and your description is just BS.

and OP, this is why you are having a hard time pinning it down. if i were youd id give it the broadest definition: house with elements of techno. I posted what I posted because those tracks are from a time when house and techno were first really clearly differentiated, and it made sense to then conceive of a hybrid of the forms.

it was 'minimal', then latin bongo drums, then deep house, and now honestly most of the new music i acquire is disco edits from soundcloud... I like to think of myself as a good enough dj where i can throw it all together (because after all there will be good tracks in any genre) but sometimes I feel like dance music is so disposable that my tastes are changing with the wind

if you take away the spanish vocal, its called dubstep.

i agree with rodri's description and i knew the purists experts like nefardec would blast him for mentioning a tempo range. its easy to hate on tempo as part of classification but damn it helps a lot as a working dj.

i sympathize with trancearmstrong. i went down the same road with trends in that order. right now im experiencing the best success ive ever had, and its because ive broken that mold/cycle and care less about aesthetic (because thats all some tracks are, they just put out a certain aesthetic) and focus on functional aspects of the tracks. like is it a track with vocals, is it a filler type track, is it a peak hour type, regardless if it has a disco, electro, tech or deep house aesthetic.

you guys are out of your minds. it's not hating on using tempo to classify, it's just simply untrue that a 125-126 tempo range represents all tech house music.

and if you need to restrict yourself to that range as a dj, you should be out of work.

tempo has nothing to do with the definition of tech house. it's not purism, it's a simple fact. tech house can be any tempo that any 'house' in general can be. generally around 117-135 but mostly in the 120s.

tech house? my favorite genre but also the most difficult to find stuff within it. disclaimer: tech house to me is on the edge to become hardhouse, only alot funkier and slower - lots of sampling and filtering and generally few synths. organic shit with a groove basically.
