New Winamp 3: Is It Worth The Switch From 2.80?

I noticed they've released Winamp 3, and it appears to have some cool add-on's, but sadly doesn't support any Winamp 2 plug-ins (i.e. Geiss, G-Force, Smoke, etc.).

Do you think it's worth the switch?

the default skin looks really nice IMO and i like the playlist setup thing..although it still has problems. i dont know whats wrong with my install but when i go to start winamp up it gives me like 7 error messages then starts, its like "wtf?". so far the skins from winamp.com SUCK, everybody went overboard with making stupid circles and weird buttons and its a pain in the ass to use most of them, again my opinion. once they start fixing bugs, reconfiguring some of the workings of the damn thing, and making visualizations like Milkdrop for it it will be awesome; but for right now its just good...i use it over winamp2x mostly because of the look and playlist editor (i switch between 5)

Hey Devbert. I was the one who originally posted the Winamp 3.0 thread. And at first I was in favor of it. But after using it for a while, it didn't seem that good. There was this thing that popped up everytime I started Winamp and there was no way I could get rid of it except by ctrl+alt+del and shutting it down, it wanted me to register for something (not the usual winamp registration that you can skip). Sometimes when I told it to play a song, it would skip it and go to the next one which I found very odd. So I've switched back to Winamp 2.8.

I'm gonna stick with 2.8 until 3.0 gets more established and has more stuff available for it.

Besides, 2.8 still plays Mp3's, doesnt it???

Posted by Devbert on Aug-11-2002 22:56:

Yeah, you guys seem to be supporting what I've heard from everyone I've asked. When they tweak it some more, get some awesome skins, and support Winamp 2x visualizations, then I'll switch.

Or you can have them both and change your player whenever you like!

Call me a heretic, but I never see the point in updating *any* of my progs unless they make significant changes to them.

For me, 2.75 still works just fine, and I'm in *no* hurry to update it since half the time all you get in the update is nice little "bonus" features like the pop-up window that's already been mentioned for version 3.0

You SHOULD update to 2.80 because there ARE virii that can travel through MP3 files. In fact, it's been mentioned on these boards before!!! You CAN be infected if you are using 2.79 or older. Search for "mp3 virus winamp 2.80" in the forums and you WILL see a thread on it here...

I'm NOT getting Winamp 3 for a WHILE. In fact, even AFTER the final version of Winamp 2 is out, I'll STILL be using it as my primary player! Until Winamp 3 can support a lot of stuff from 2.x, as well as the MP3CUE plugin that's at http://www.guerillasoft.com/mp3cue , I'm not getting it. Besides, MP3CUE needs to be fixed anyway.

Well, my understanding of the MP3 virus probs for older versions had that it would affect you if, and only if, you use the minibrowser on Winamp...which I don't.

On top of that, from what I could find, the virus, even if it hits you, only *hides* your MP3 files, and then tries to do some nasty things via Outlook Express, which has long been erased from my HD as well...which is a good thing since practically every virus that comes down the pike seems to be tailored for Outlook...yet another reason to avoid MS products when at all possible

Trillian's better than ANY ICQ version because it has it, Yahoo IM, AIM, and MSN IM, as well as mIRC chat! http://www.trillian.cc/ to get it...

i installed it, worked no problem. got used to the minor flaws and enjoyed the new cool stuff (multiple playlists! transparency! OMG!). It took me about half an hour to realize i don't have mp3cue and joystick control --> bye bye !

Posted by Shoes on Aug-12-2002 19:02:

To be fair, how is Winamp3 gonna get 'established' and have loads of skins and plugins if no-one uses the thing?

Posted by Devbert on Aug-12-2002 20:23:

What's joystick control?

winamp 3 slowed my computer down to a crawl... my old skins looksed like garbage. i wouldn't recommend switching if you have a crappy comp (like me, =P). there are a lot of useless features if you just wanna play music. i switched back to 2.80 after 10 minutes.
