amd duron 1.2 (my athlon 1.2 t-bird fried)
gigabyte ga-7vrx mobo
512mb pc2100 ddr
turtle beach santa cruz
linksys 10/100 nic card
nvidia geforce 2 mx
lite-on 24x10x40 (d: )
acer 50x max (g: )
maxtor 120gb 5400 rpm (partioned into 3 drives, c: 5gbs for winxp, e: 10gbs for suse linux 8.0, f: 105gbs for storage)
maxtor 80gb 5400 rpm (h: )

logitech opitcal mouse (with scroll button)
$12 memorex keyboard (hey it works)
17" samtron .24dpi monitor
antec sx1040 case (with 400w power supply)

another maxtor 80gb 5400 rpm drive is coming onto that, gotta be rmaed first. probably gonna add another maxtor 120gb or 160gb soon too.

alright, i don't game, all i do is mass storage don't i own? its sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Posted by Fraggle on Aug-12-2002 06:12:

oohh yeah

santa cruz is a nice soundcard!

...had mine for a couple of months now...very happy - especially 'cos i picked it up 1/2 price seeing the stupid shop didn't know how much they're worth

err...if u're saving up for a 5400rpm drive...save up a bit more & go for the 7200rpm ones...u'll notice the difference!!!

my windows used to take 4-5 min to boot up on 5400rpm drive (tho i'm sure it had near-zero cache)...but on 7200rpm drive, it boots up under a minute (like 58 seconds i think)

...dun worry...200g fills up quick!!!...always thinking..."eh...'nother 80g drive...should take a while to fill"...couple of months down the track..."shit, time to look at buying a bigger hd "

have fun!!!

oh no the deskstar GXP are known to be problematic as hell. Go look on the web (search google) for all the rants about these hard drives. They have a habit of dying on you for no good reason and not after 4 years either

hey Pat i sure hope you overclock that thing mate!

hell no, i'm a stability and a storage whore
i don't really care for speed, plus the 512 ddr ram will keep me afloat

Why isn't anyone buying the best HDDs on the market: WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR SPECIAL EDITION WITH 8 MB CACHE? They have a 200 GB 7200 RPM drive coming out later this year (Oct./Nov. 2002)! I'm getting the 120 GB drive when the 200 comes out because price will be better and if I REALLY NEED 200+ GB of storage, I would just get another 120 GB drive. What's wrong with that?

Posted by PatMcGroin on Aug-13-2002 04:48:

simple....BECAUSE I'M A MAXTOR WHORE
just like i'm a lite-on whore
an imation whore
an amd whore
a linksys whore
a logitech whore
a crucial whore

etc etc

i have my preferred companies

Yea, new computer's seriously kick ass, we just got a new puter inplace of our old AMD300mhz, this beast is:

AMD AthlonXP 1800
MSI KT3 Ultra Mobo
128meg MSI Geforce4 Ti4200 3D Card
512mg PC2700 Samsung Ram
2x80gig Seagate 7200rpm HD's (Running a RAID 0 Config)
6.1 Soundcard in the mobo
48/12/48 Lite-On Burner

I cant believe how fast it is.. lol and Ali92, the reason i didn't get the 8meg Cached WD Hard drive, was the price!! the Seagates were AUS$195 each, and the WD 120gig was AUS$410, some ppl cant afford superduper computers, heheh :P

Ciao
Pointy

heh...i think the 120gxps are ok

...it's the notorious 75gxps which bombed out big time
(IBM recommended running time 3hrs/day LOL!!!)

funnily enough i've had one running for a while now with no problems...just to be safe tho, also have an 80mm fan running directly onto the drive 24/7

...well did have one major failure, but that was my fault - moving the hd around *at the same time* windows was installing update LOL!!!
...learnt my lesson there!!!

yeah...as Pointy says...for an 80g 7200rpm WD 8mb cache, u can get 2x 80g 7200rpm seagate 2mb cache...plus enough money for a round at the pub

sure 8mb cache is quick...but screw the price...anyhow, just wait until serialATA becomes the norm...blow ALL current drives outta the water

...time to start saving for a new mobo
