I went to the marcy.

Also, you used to be able to browse parties by type, and back in the day people were more comfortable about using FB for those things since it was a closed network. So you used to be able to check FB and find a list of all the house parties that weekend on campus. Then the police started using it

It used to be so ghetto and clunky that my friends and I were able to do some pretty funny stuff with it.

Once we found this goofy green haired candy raver kid that we new from our school and devised a little trick using him.

We made a fake profile, which at that time actually wasnt that easy because you needed verified .edu email addresses, which was like a cookie cutter sorostitute named 'sara beth peterson'. We created her entire life history, we enrolled her for classes. We gave her an alma mater and contacted former would-be classmates and they claimed to have remembered Sara. We populated the profile with a collection of photos we found from some girl on flickr. We received literally hundreds of messages and pokes from creepy men, including some from people we knew, which were super embarassing.

Anyway logged in as this girl, we made a group called "I love to shop!" Back then, you used to be able to search for people on facebook by interest and many other topics, so we were able to artificially construct a search query that found all of the single women at my school who were active students and had shopping listed as an interest. Also, back then you had to invite people to your group 1 by 1 after searching for them. So we combined that search with the 'shopping' search, which resulted in a list of girls, and then I wrote a little javascript which automatically invited all 400 or so of them.

Within about 2 days the group membership was nearly 400. Then we changed the name to 'I slept with Mark _____!', which was the name of the aforementioned kid. Back then you were able to do shady things like that.

It took a good while before anyone noticed. This was back in 2005 I believe.

Suffice to say, it's still around today.

(we lost control of the acct though because we forgot the password and the email was disabled by the school)

I think it's highly likely he got some poon from that prank. I love the description haha.

Posted by nefardec on May-15-2011 16:43:

he was president of the DDR club, where we first observed him at the student center.

Ah freshman year! We did this kind of nonsense just about every day.

But I know, what a bitch, he didn't even say thanks!

He's probably a dating coach now or something...

haha, that is epic. i remember when FB came out to my school too and the whole party thing that you mentioned before was around as well. i liked facebook much better when it was just .edu email domain. but i think this whole "private group" thing is really lame, because it used to exist before (i.e. searching for people by classes they were enrolled with as well like you mentioned).

What's the application process for the MARCY like?

Do they require you to blow things like the cocaine and get the best high while fully maintaining your social cool?

What kind of GPA do they look for? Is that even important?

Posted by nefardec on May-15-2011 17:21:

first rule of marcy is you don't talk about marcy

ah yes, those luxuriant walls of tender, bass-softened damask, adorned by the faint scent of alkaloids and vanilla.

would that i could be embraced by those venerable paries, methinks a deeper khasm i could not endeavor to entertain
