Marco V - Con:fusion
DJ Marco V is hot! He has earned a residency in the English superclub GodsKitchen, just came back fom Japan, had a huge hit with the Innercity theme Godd and has a double album with exclusively own productions in store right now. Marco Verkuylen could find a little opening in his busy agenda to talk about the UK club scene, superstar djs, the Marco V style and an negative adventure in Atlanta.

What is the most striking difference with spionning in Holland?
The biggest difference is that people in the UK don't know me. Out there I'm actually a starting dj, I'm still fresh. In Holland many people know me from many projects. The UK audience is very enthusiastic.

UK Clubbers are famous for their "party-mindedness". How did you experience that?
Yes, that's right. They party hard. In Holland you have many good nights aswell, but it seems in the UK there's a guarantee for good nights every night.

Recently you have accomplished your first top 40 (dutch billboard) succes with Godd. Was that a surprise?
Yes! It was like getting hit by lightning! Godd was the theme for Innercity and entered the top 40 at 17. Without attention, without airplay. We shot the videoclip later on.

Your album, Con:fusion will be released soon. Will there be more top 40 material on it?
No, I don't think so. look, I produce what I like. I'm not interested in the hitpotential. The only think that matters is the quality. Commercial success is a bonus. If it were up to me, all the tracks could be hits!

You're not 100% a prog dj, but in a way I think you can be labeled that way. When I read UK mags I feel like prog is starting to get a bad reputation. What are your thoughts about this?
Yes, that's a big talent of the UK media. First they love UK garage or trance and later on they treat it as if it's poison. I don't want to be labeled anyway. I don't produce trance, neither techno, neither prog. A lot of interviewers tell me they have trouble labelling me. I think that's a huge compliment.

What is the Marco V style?
I have no clue. I spin records that I like. Records that Michel de Heij could spin and records that Oakey could spin. It's actually a blend of styles. The thing that matters most is the beat.

What does it take to be a superstar dj?
That's actually a combination of several things. You have to produce. Besides that, you shouldn't imitate. Don't try to be the next Tiesto or Carl Cox. Interaction with the audience is important. You must be an entertainer.

You seem to have all these things. Are you becoming a superstar dj?
Hahaha, I don't know. You can climb the ladder fast, but you can also fall down hard after that. That's why I refuse to comment.

I heard you had some trouble with the US border partol. It was said you couldn't enter the States for the next 10 years. What happened?
I had spun in the US before and was asked to play in Atlanta. It turned out I needed a work permit. They put me in a jailcel at the airport and they took pictures and fingerprints. After that they put me on the first flight back to Holland. It turns out I can't enter the US for the next 10 years. My attorneys are trying to reverse this.
It's funny though, I made the song Atlanta 02022002 when I returned to Holland. I got rid of all the frustration by producing this song.

Last, but not least. What will the coming months bring you? Abroad? Ibiza? Dance Valley? Festivals in the UK?
This summer I'll be spinning 5 times for Godskitchen on Ibiza and I will be in the UK and Canada a lot. I have many bookingrequests from the US but unfortunately they're just options now. Dance Valley depends on the fact in which tent I will play. In the Uk I'll spin at Global Gathering, the Godskitchen festival.
