Take a shot at the freedom review

Really great party on sunday I'll start off by saying that!

I got there around 11:30 to see a decent size line up but it was not too bad which was surprising but later seen why it wasn't so bad it was pretty full already, the staff did a good job getting people in and keeping the line moving + it doesn't hurt having somebody in line waiting for us. But well done by the staff for this event.

Funkagenda:

I forget how good this guy is every time i see him, he has the effect where you know he's good but he surprises you when you see him spin. He has a very good mixture of genres thrown in to the set and some pretty nice build ups involved, it had me dancing for a good part of the set and singing along to some of the tracks, Well done.

Armin Van Buuren:

I made my way to KH to check him out since I have not seen him in a while and to be around most of my friends who are trance nuts. He really surprised me with how hard he came out and continued to keep that pace, I was really impressed with his set and I am not a huge fan but I don't hate the guy. It was so hot in Koolhaus and it got unbearable + Armin did some really dumb prayer pose & then bam in to a jesus pose... I said "f this noise" and left but... I must say a lot of girls were beautiful there and didn't seem to care if they showed some skin.

Dirty South:

Dirty South was Dirty South.. pretty much similar to last time he was here a couple months ago but I think he is awesome and didn't see most of his set so I can't really comment on it but what I head of it was pretty much what I heard last time.

STEVE LAWLER!

"Hey Toronto.. How you doing? I'm glad to be back. Let's take things a little Deeper" or something like that.

3:30 am this man's intro just brought me to life! Incredible!!!! I'm still buzzing off of this set, the flow was just out of this world! it started off slow and bouncy and then got dark! This set actually reminded me a lot of Carlo Lio's style, I don't have the words to tell you how good it was.. throwing in Techno here and there also, Lawler really brought it to Guv sunday.

Surprise track of the night for me was "Cold Comfort (Patrick Siech Remix) - Christopher Bleckmann" amazing also throwing in "Oliver $ - Doin' Ya Thang" towards the end & for a finally playing Radio Head to close his set. Lawler was amazing but he ended early and I don't blame him since he had a boat cruise later and I think the plan was to go spin on skybar but the weather was shit.

Really upset i missed the cruise and Cz after but money wasn't there.

My brief review:

Armin:
Saw the first 35 minutes or so. In that time, it didn't really sound like he was playing "trance", more like house, some electro, with the odd trance break (ala SHM). It was OK, probably the most OK time I had seeing Armin. Fun visuals. On one of the vocal tracks, the lyrics scrolling on the screens had spelling errors ("You where" instead of "You were"), haha.

A-Trak (tent):
The tent was a disaster sound wise. The sound was so low, you could have a conversation at normal volume 10 ft from the speakers. Terrible. Someone really dropped the ball sound wise. It felt terrible when he dropped a bass heavy track, and almost nothing comes out. It was that bad.

Dirty South:
Nothing special, played some typical tracks.

Steve Lawler:
YEEEEES. This was the first time that night where I was actually dancing, he never disappoints.

Was There from 12-5

Armin Sets was Pretty Wicked, I caught the firt Hour and Last Hour. There was lil to no vocals when I was in KH, so I was plenty Happy. Blake Jarrel played some Mainstream Remixes which seemed to get the crowd going...

Was in Tent for A-Trak, where I ended up regrouping with a bunch of peole I lost in KH. He played Black and Yellow and Robot Rock so I couldnt be happier.

Caught the Last 30mins of Dirty South and First 30mins Lawler. AMazing stuff all around.

Came back to KH with some more Banging Trance, Loved it.

Music Great Crowd was great (crowded but you had space to walk in ALL rooms) Girls were wicked (Sexier and Friendlier than usual)...Sound was great.

If you were by the LEFT SPEAKER for AVB KH I was the Brown Guy Smoking a Splif and Going Wild!!

Good night out!!
didn't see much of lawler @ Guv as I wanted to see him on the boat.

Armin was good...definitely parts of it early on were very electroish. Not bad though...I don't know why i can jutst never find anything wrong with his sets. Always a good time.

Funkagenda - Wicked time...quite trancey at parts but very solid.

Lawler - TERRIFIC intro!!! That's always been one of my favourite intros of his and I never thought I'd hear it again. He was easily the DJ of the weekend but I really didn't see much of him at night as I wanted to rest for the boat.

Lawler Boat - The weather settled and it was a terrific boat music wise. Lawler once again was super fun behind the decks.

wanted to go to zone / cherry beach but decided it was time to go home to bed.

Don't be upset that we're not in sync anymore.

Posted by Stilez on May-24-2011 19:26:

I thought all the dj's were amazing from what I heard & saw. AvB was spectacular & playing A LOT harder than I'm used to hearing from him, but I liked it . However, for me, Lawler was hands down the most insane. He took it to a whole other level.

So what did you all think of the Live coverage on the Guv Twitter & FB accounts from the night? What did you all think of the pics & vids taken from the venue as they happened?

As you're aware, Abort416's friend @pshag was on til 12:30, that's when I took over & was conducting the live coverage after 12:30am for AvB, Lawler, Dirty South, Blake Jarrell, + more. If you're not following @The_Guvernment already on twitter, you should. Big things coming exclusive for Twitter followers. Also, don't forget to add me @stilez if you haven't already.

I know the TA family is one of the most engaging & present in the club and on the net. Hopefully we'll (TA) be the big force behind the twitter #TranceFamily too.

Until the next event.

p.s. Please feel free to leave any constructive suggestions, comments, or feedback. As this was our first 'trial run' in the Guv complex, we're naturally thinking of ways to better enhance end user engagement and interactivity

I was tweeting like a whole new level whore that night lol, was trying to use the hashtag FreedomTO as much as possible to get a trending topic :P I was @georgerimore, thx for checking the low eq's at the KH btw, the shit was just stupid early on lol, glad it was tweaked a tad

On to the review:

Mark Oliver was smashing in the beginning, maybe I'm biased because he's my favorite resident DJ in Toronto, but yeah, very good way to start the night and ease into Blake's set. I didn't stick around for Blake's set that much, as I was trying to find my friends in the 1 million person sauna bath called the main room. I just chilled in the Acid Loung till they finally made it there.

When I was at Funkagenda, I was dancing in the Acid Lounge... I really didn't want to deal with the sweaty sweat filled main room, and honestly he played a really high energy set! Had a few mainstream bangers in there obviously, but played a few of his own edits and mashups that I noticed. Then I made my way back to the KH making the mistake of trying to go back through the KH outside entrance which OBVIOUSLY was one-way, but I was an idiot and didn't think of it.

Sooooo I decided to take a peek and listen to a bit of A-Trak's set... and I loved it! But like someone said in this thread, they had some problems with the sound, they definitely have to get that fixed for future events. I saw A-Trak almost blow a gasket at some of the dudes next to him cause the music was clipping.

I did not like the first half of AvB's set, but I guess this is what EDM has come to nowadays... the second part was pretty good though, even when he did the retarded prayer pose when the breakdown of "Painting Pyramids (I think, I'm absolutely terrible with ID's)" happened then flawlessly transitioned into his famous Jesus pose, I still absolutely love that track on a big system. If you can just disregard all the jesus poses and headphone arm raises then you can at least mildly enjoy sets from AvB. The crowd was digging it up though - he really is a master at crowd control.

I stayed around for MO's closer in the KH and he started off AMAZING. I finally heard "Superman" on a big system, which I enjoyed greatly. To all the haters, yes I like Mat Zo. DEAL WITH IT. But then came Sun & Moon, which I heard waaaaaaaaaaay too many times and resulted in a /facepalm from me (half of the track was enough for me a few months ago). I wanted to see if he'd play something else after that, but he ended up playing another vocal track. So while I thoroughly enjoyed ( ) dancing with all the sketchbags, I went on to the main room to check out the last part of Lawler's set.

All I can say was FIRE FIRE FIRE. The man had the crowd eating out of his hand. I dno what else to say. I kinda wish I saw him on the boat cruise and CZ, but decided to take a long nap before hitting up CB.

All in all, a 7/10 for this years Freedom.

P.S. Is it just me or did all the hot girls finally come out of their houses and get back in the Guv? Holy FUCK that was amazing at Freedom.

P.P.S Sadly, no funny stories this time, except for a few sketchies taking up half the KH floor to sidestep and dance, but I mean that's just the regular vibe

Here's a vid of that which I recorded

First thing i have to say about Freedom 2011 is the crowd. Pretty much friendly all around. Everyone seemed to be watching their step and i didn't feel any pushy douche bags anywhere all night. The crowd was ready to have fun and it showed.

Saw a bit of A-Trak first and he was enjoyable but the sound was meh. DIdn't want to miss Armin so went back in.

I caught most of Armin's set and i have to say that it was quite fun. He kept the pace going with some good tracks here and there with some short filler acid/house/electro peppered on top. For what it was, the crowd ate it up. I kept dancing and everyone around me had all smiles.

Steve Lawler took things to another level as someone else said. He was awesome. I've seen him plenty of times so i know what to expect. The Radiohead track near the end was perfect way to end the night for me.

Overall great night.

LOL @ the praying stance. DJ poses have taken a new low, but glad to hear Armin still keeps it real.

haha same here. Hearing that and SHM's save the world tonight were the songs that caught my ears.

I was seriously let down by the tent and its sound system - what a waste of what could have been an all around killer set
